Fine, my faithful Myrmidon (ha! Go look that one up!) I shall point out that we have more posts than the other TX threads even with the lack of info from UTHSCSA.

Second, I propose this: write a valentine for someone on this thread. You first. 😀

Happy Valentine's Day fellow classmates 😍

I'm the out-of-stater who's gonna be a Texas cowgirl 😀

Does anyone know when we will get more information from UTHSCSA? I feel sort of lost- although that can be because I don't know anyone else going to Texas. I love reading this thread- I feel more connected this way. Thanks

Welcome!!!

According to lane (he's the president of MS1 class right now), there will be more information sent to us around march since they will be very busy up until then. There is the possibility of a "welcome weekend" where we can look for places to live, meet future classmates, etc. Also, after reading last year's c/o 2008 thread, it looks like they received a packet of information in march and their financial aid information in april.

Thats all we know so far!

Welcome ladybugg! What school are you coming from (I'm assuming it's somewhere in CA)? You'll quickly see that we Texans (and especially UTHSCSA peeps) are about as friendly as you can imagine.... 😍

Damn straight, much nicer than anyone from so cal 🙄

Even though I have lived in Massachusetts for the majority of my life, I was born in San Antonio (Fort Sam). Does that count???

You're good to go.

Which reminds me of the time I was in the Marine Corps, and an auditorium (several hundred) of Marines (self included) was listening to a speaker. As a way of warming up the crowd, he asked,

"How many New Yorkers we got in this place?"
[mild smattering of appluase]

"How many Californianss we got in this place?"
[More applause. They tried to be motivated but couldn't quite figure it out]

"How many Texans we got in this place?"

[literally one-third of the room stood up, and started yelling so loud that we nearly tore the roof off]

😀

Yeah, you could say that Texans have a smidge of pride... :horns:

I was trying to explain the pride thing to my girlfriend out here..."Uh, well, we're the only state to be our own country, and, uh, it's very congenial and it's, uh, a great place to grow up and uh..."

Fed up, and sounding stupid, I finally just said, "You'd just have to be from Texas to understand!"

that is SO true. im at school just in the south, and they think us texans are weird, with our flags and "don't mess with texas" and lifelong loyalty and "remember the alamo" and tex-mex and cows and wide-open skies and chicken fried steak ("is that chicken or steak??" ) and of course, our ridiculous pride at being the 2nd biggest state in the union (im still really thrown off that i can drive for five hours and end up five states away...i can't even get out of texas in 5 hours back home!)...........really though, only proof that texans do it bigger and better, always. 😀

Here's a little something to get this thread going....

The Entering Class of 2005 list is now posted on the uthscsa.edu website.

Go to "school of medicine" then "information for applicants" it is a PDF file.

It's so awesome to be on that list!

Thanks for your warm welcome 🙂 Everyone seemed really sweet when I interviewed (that has been the extent of my Texas experience, although I did get my picture taken in front of the Alamo!). I am from Los Angeles and graduated University of California, Santa Barbara in 2002. I am really excited to get to meet all of you and learn more about Texas. Everyone here teases me that'll have to get a truck with a gun rack to fit in--

I get the same comments up here in Mass. The gun rack, the pick-um-up truck, belt buckle, accent, cowboy hat, you name it. Oh, eventually, yes, I will have all these things.

Thanks for the info!! Looks like we have a very diverse class, just based on the schools alone 👍

I counted about 215 students.....not bad!

I am guessing the list will shift around a little bit, with out of state acceptances, waitlists, etc., but its cool to have some idea. I recognize a few names from the interview trail.

From Dr. Jones' message:

"As last year, we were very pleased that over 90% of our class ranked our medical school either first or second in the match."

Interesting!!!

Why do I still see the 2004 list? Are you guys talking about the actual list of names? I must be blind....

Post your AIM or whatever name here so we can chat with each other. Or, if you'd prefer to keep it on the d/l, PM me. I'll start:

I love seeing this list

Hello everyone...I have some question regarding the school itself. I matched with UTHSCSA and seems like a great place, but have also gotten into a couple out of state private school and would like to make a thorough decision...

I was wondering what are some of the pros and possible cons with going to San Antonio?
What is a normal academic day like?
Since we are starting a month later than previous years, how is the CIC going to be taught?

Thanks for your help in advance. Look forward to hearing some of your responses.

First question: How much did you love SA? More or less so than the out of state places?

Second question: Given the first, are they worth the extra 10-20K/year in loans?

That's where I'd start my decision matrix.

This sealed the deal for me!! 👍

I didn't even take the time to apply out of state. The UT schools all provide excellent educations and match very very well when residency rolls around. How can you justify an extra 20K a year unless you're independently wealthy?

That's the reason to go to UT-San Antonio. Plus, San Antonio is a very good town to live and work in.

To the OP, did you send in your UTHSCSA letter of intent?

p.s.
I saw Pat Green in Nashville this weekend. Man I want to be back in TX and hear some good country music... 😳

There are some really great Texas County bands coming to San Antonio this year. Not that we'll have tons of time for concerts in the fall, but I am going to as many as possible before that. My present for getting into med school was VIP tickets to the Kenny Chesney concert. So, I get to meet him which is exciting!

I totally misread your post. I thought it had already happened. But that will be awesome! I bet that is a whole lot of fun. And I'm still jealous.

I figure we can work in some concerts even during med school 🙂 and I'm sure they'll be no shortage of my fellow classmates interested in going (I have trouble finding country fans out in LA).

I saw Robert Earl Keen a couple years ago at a 4th of July concert @ a Missions game (Go Missions !) but that was my last concert before Green...that's a long time.

Well Kenny isn't until march 19, but it will be fun! And you're right that is WAY too long. There is someone at least once a month here at Cowboy's Dance Hall...I saw Phil Vassar a few weeks ago.

REK is possibly the best country/folk singer alive. 👍 We'll definitely have to go see him in concert.

Speaking of things to do in SA...Has anyone ever gone tubing on the Guadalupe? If I remember correctly, that's not too far a drive from SA. What a blast! Lazily floating down the river, soaking up the sun, and enjoying a cold beverage. Hmmmmmmm.

We went last year after the flood, so it wasn't really "lazily floating." But yes, it was a lot of fun.

Hello TexDC!
First of all, your feelings about UTHSCSA are correct...It is a great place!!! As I have not attended medical school anywhere else ( 🙂 ), it will be hard for me to compare it to others, but I can give you some of my feelings.
First, pros:
1) We have a great faculty that really knows their stuff. You get taught by up to about 10 professors per subject, each one teaching specifically what they know, rather than one or two teaching a wide variety of things they don't know as well. Plus, they are incredibly enthusiastic and helpful.
Possible con: A couple of the professors are a little out there. They really know their stuff, but aren't very good at relaying it to students.
Pro: If you have a professors you don't like, you probably won't have to see them again. You don't have to put up with someone for the whole semester.

2) The atmosphere is incredibly laid-back. There is no competition between us as classmates and everyone is helpful.

3) San Antonio is a great town! It's just big enough to have all the luxuries of a big city, but the traffic isn't nearly as bad (I used to live in Dallas). Especially in the medical center area, the cost of living is reasonable, the area is relatively safe and downtown (i.e. concerts and bars) is only 10 minutes away.

4) I can personally vouch that you will have a great second year class to help you through--I know that no out-of-state school can offer you a second year class like ours (will be)!

Second,
A "normal" academic day varies considerably, depending on the time of year. I think Lane had posted this earlier, but you may be in class from 9 to 3 one day, but 8-2 the next. The days aren't usually very long, but can be every once in a while. Gross lab days will be long, depending on how long your group takes to finish dissections (mine was always last, we were very meticulous). But there's also days that we would be out at noon. It all depends--but there's almost always a short day to balance out a long day. And now that Gross lab is over (*sniff*), we are going to have so much free time!!!

Finally,
We don't know all of the specifics yet, but we were told that CIC will be incorporated throughout the rest of the year. Instead of learning all of the aspects of the physical exam in the first month, you will learn it as it comes up in the course of study. For example, you will learn how to listen for heart sounds and what the different ones mean when you study the cardiovascular system in gross, histo, physiology, etc. This really will be better--when we learned all of this stuff in the first month, we had no idea what much of it meant, especially in the musculoskeletal system. It didn't really make sense until we came up to it in gross. As far as the rest of CIC (geriatric track, standardized patient track, etc.), I think some of it is being cut back, but I'm not exactly sure how. The final schedules will be done in the coming weeks, so we will be able to explain alot more then.

Well, sorry for the long post guys. I was just trying to answer the questions as best I could. If some of this is incoherent, I'm sorry, but I have gross anatomy on the brain (ha!)--we have our phase 4 exam on it on Friday 😱 .

I hope this helps! Overall, also listen to your gut feeling. Do you feel especially comfortable at any of these schools? That was a major point for me--almost more than anything else. I felt comfortable with the students, faculty and staff at UTHSCSA and knew that I would happy here. As usual, my gut feeling was right!

Keep the questions coming! 😀

I go tubing all the time over the summer. Get an extra tube for a cooler...take some cans and it's really fun (although I heard they were considering banning even cans...glass bottles were already 'banned'). However, the Guadalupe gets really busy sometimes during the summer (which is the only chance I get to go). I prefer going all the way to the Frio.
