LOL, thanks for the info. I'll try and chill out.

It's okay...I totally understand. I hope my last post didn't sound rude. I just remember being in your shoes at this time last year and itching to get started; I know exactly how you feel! I know you feel overwhelmed about all the things you are going to have to buy and do, but like I said, they will give you all the information you need. And continue to ask questions if you have them...I'm happy to calm your nerves, if needed. 😀

Thanks to futrdrbaker and CrzyDoc451 for the help vis' a vis' tablet PCs and powerpoint. 😀

One phase test down, five more to go!!!

Anyways, our class officers are going to send out a welcome packet sometime soon with TONS of information in it, including how to access the utmedbuysell yahoo group. So if you can't get in now, don't fret. We'll take care of you!

Thanks!!! I am anxiously waiting! 😀

As far as I know, wireless internet is available in the library and the dental school lecture halls. They are working on installing it for the medical school lecture halls, but I don't believe that is available right now...but it might be for your class next year.

I can confirm that there is wireless in both the medical lecture halls. If you want to use the wireless system you have to first go to the computing resources center with your laptop/pda and have them authorize you on the network.

As for laptops and pdas, wait until you get to school to see what will work best. They are trying to integrate PDAs more into the curriculum, but I think it is pretty hit or miss right now. UTHSCSA has always been a pretty traditionalist place that emphasized lecture/classroom time as the best way to learn, and IMO they are going through a bit of growing pains since the LCME told the administration they should cut down a bit on that classroom time. So there is a pretty good chance that there will be extra/different requirements than even the current MS1 class.

Right now, your job is to enjoy the rest of your year before school starts, and just realize that there will be plenty of time for the obsessive-compulsive stuff later... and hopefully not too much of that either! 🙂

Do you guys think that the doctor-doctor divorce rate is higher than doctor-nondoctor divorce rate? The reason, AggieGal, for the high rates of divorce amongst doctors is the tendency for doctors to be workaholics.

What's really somewhat scary is that other doctors sometimes (erroneously I would add) view the ER medicine crowd as "not comitted enough" because of the shift-work nature of their practice. But the bottom line is that when you are a doctor, there is another relationship that enters your life which can intrude on the traditional relationships at home. This is the relationship with patients. Patients are there 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, their collective needs are literally infinite. They are there whether you are at the hospital or not. This is something I don't think we will fully grasp until it is we that are making the decision calls that help or potentially put them in danger. As medical students we are mainly just observers of this quirky process, with some degree of anxiety that it will soon be us on the line.

This is why I think it is really important early on to find and develop relationships with good role models. Because for every messed-up, dysfunctional doctor, there are others who are balanced and successful at home and at work. These people are some of the greatest resources to have, but unfortunately, there are no big neon signs pointing the way. You sometimes just have to hunt them down. I know that my own specialty choices have been influenced because I have found people who I want to be like both as a doctor and more generally as a human being.

You guys will all get assigned an academic advisor (usually just one of the faculty docs) when you get to school. They don't make you talk to them or even contact them, but I would encourage you guys to use that resource. Some are good advisors and others not so much. But don't be afraid to switch your advisor if needed and get with someone who has a real interest in helping you out. When you eventually get down to deciding on what you want to be when you grow up and residency issues it makes a huge difference having someone in your corner who knows the ropes, even if they aren't in the specialty you want.

Anyway, sorry for the rant.

I wish there was a "how-to" book on how to achieve life satisfaction and happiness....it's so easy to say, "Keep you life balanced," but it's so incredibly difficult to do. I just hope that I will have a good role model who can demonstrate what it's like to value one's career and home life almost equally....

FYI - wireless IS available in the lecture halls right now.

some lectures are available online, depending on the lecturer. 99% of the lectures follow the syllabus, though, so it's not necessary to download them unless you want to see more pretty pictures.

also, regarding equipment.

DON'T BUY IT. at least not yet. i'm sure you'll get a letter from dr. lawler with a laundry list of stethoscopes, otoophthalmoscopes, tuning forks, sphygmomanometers, eye charts, etc. we were told to buy it all last year...and after all was said and done people ended up spending $400-800. if i were you i would contact your big sib and ask to borrow theirs or find a buddy in a different group that will share equipment with you. you can save yourself a ton of cash and the equipment (except steth) will be provided in exam rooms once you hit your third year.

How's everybuddy on this sunny Monday morning?

Although it's Monday, at least it's not cold and rainy. 👍

Lane, thanks for the purchase advice. I know that allheart.com has Littmann Cardio IIIs for $120 vs. $175 @ the Baylor and UTH bookstores. 👍

Not that it matters one darn bit now but I just learned I was validated from TMDSAS' website on 2/12/05...I waited long enough 😎

I have a LMFU of 2/18/05....I wonder if this will be the last one?

First off, congrats to all of you guys for getting into San Antonio. I am a 4th year and I am ready to move on.

Now I have a housing option for you guys to consider. :luck: I have a house that I am selling or will be willing to rent out as well. It is a 2000 sq ft 2 story home with 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths on a cul de sac, just minutes from the med center. Anyone interested please let me know. Great neighborhood if you have a family or if you want to shack up with a few roomates and split the rent which will be much cheaper, per person, that renting and apartment.

If anyone is interested just email me at this address: [email protected]

But enjoy this last bit of freedom because med school hits you with a fury and it is the best time you will have in your life, especially if you have a class like mine!!

Thanks!!

Just an update on correspondence from UTHSCSA...I got a letter from financial aid saying they got my FAFSA and they needed a copy of my tax return, my W-2's, and a verification sheet that's on their website. I sent it yesterday, so hopefully this means that they are already on the ball!

I didnt receive a letter :scared:

Maybe that's because I didn't make any income last year and I don't have any W-2 or tax forms??

It'll probably come soon. Geography and all that.

You did fill out the FAFSA, right? If so, then it takes some time for that info to be processed by the Dept. of Education, etc. I filled out mine about two weeks ago, FYI.

Also, I just want to point out how awesome TX schools are: with last year's published SA tuition, fees, books estimate @ $11,000 and the budget ~$28,000 (this from the TAMU finaid lady), we won't even have to take out private loans to finance school. Nice. :horns:

VERY good news...Plus I decided to try living with my dad for awhile, so I'll have no rent, bills, or food costs. WOOHOO!

...and applied to Teach For America. I've paid so much lip service to it, I figure its really now or never that I do something like that. So does anyone know how UTHSCSA feels about deferrals for something like this? I know on the website it says "no deferrals," but I can't help but think something like TFA would grant at least a little bit more consideration from the adcom.

Anyways, TFA's got such a low acceptance rate that its probably not even going to be an issue, but just thought I'd ask. 😀

teach for america is 2 years, no? i don't know for sure but i don't know of any school that would be too keen on a 2 year deferral.

most schools aren't real keen on midgets either, but hey, that didn't seem to stop you. :fawk:

My friend just got into TFA...but isn't going to do it (she was assigned to Houston actually).

Anyway, here's link to all the med schools that have 2 year deferral guarantees with TFA: http://www.teachforamerica.org/employ_grad.html#medical_publichealth

I figure it can't hurt asking considering so many schools are willing to give you a deferral. That being said, here's the defenitive reason not to do it:

Wow, I didn't know there was such a big SA gathering on this site. Congrats to all of you. UTHSCSA is a very good school and I'm sure y'all will enjoy it. Feel free to ask me any questions, though I might be a little out of the loop.
Let me know if Leonard Lawrence (one of your associate deans) is still walking around the halls hunting for junk food.

Congrats again

LEL is retiring - he also doesn't roam the halls anymore due to a problem with his sciatic (pinched maybe...don't know). dr. wartman is leaving as well to pursue a position in DC.

we'll have lots of new faces next year 🙂

I filled out my FAFSA on January 12th or so 🙄

Yup, gotta love the reduced costs in Texas!! 👍 👍

Hey everyone. I just joined the thread and I had a question for anyone who lives in SA already....Is $650 too much for a one bedroom apt in the med center? I'm not sure if this is a decent price or if I should keep looking.

Which apartment complex is that?

The current students are recommending Carlyle, Promontory Pointe, and The Vintage as the "nice" apartments to live at near the med center....I think lane pays around 650 for his 1/1 at Carlyle....right?? 😕 😕

By the way....welcome!! 😀 👍

It depends on which complex you are looking at and how nice it is. I am paying $733 for a one-bedroom about half a mile from the school, but I also know people that are paying $500 for a one-bedroom. My complex is only four years old, has assigned covered parking, valet trash pickup, nice pools, a nice weight room...but I am definitely paying for it! So $650 isn't bad, depending on what's important to you in an apartment complex. You could go cheaper, but probably wouldn't get as many or as nice of amenities. Notice I said "probably". I'm just giving my opinion considering I have not lived anywhere else in San Antonio other than my current residence; I just have heard things from classmates.

By the way--it's Promontory Pointe, in case you're interested in it.

Promontory Point is actually the complex I'm talking about. Right now their one bedrooms are $650. Do you like living there?

I will be totally and completely honest--my boyfriend and I will be moving once our lease is up. To me, we are paying too much for the kind of crap we are having to put up with. The management and staff are all too happy to help you and be nice and sweet until you move in. Then you don't mean crap to them. For example, we had put in a maintenance request about two months after we moved in. It took them 2 weeks to fulfill it! We had to call every day until they sent someone out to fix it!!! I once waited 15 minutes in the lobby to pick up a package; I counted 5 people that worked there that just kept walking by and staring at me and wouldn't ask if I had been helped. Parking can be a huge problem, depending on where you live within the complex. Unless you live in the far back corner, there will be almost no uncovered parking for your guests and they will have to walk a pretty hefty distance to get to your apartment; or if you have a roommate and there is only one covered parking spot per apartment, your roommate gets screwed with the parking (that is the case with me!). Even so, people continue to park in other people's parking spots, even though there are signs saying they are for residents only. My boyfriend has had three people towed from his spot b/c they were there when he came home at 3 in the morning! It is a loud complex--the residents and their guests are VERY disrespectful (i.e. loud and drunk), especially at 2 and 3 in the morning, the night before phase exams. It has happened to me quite often.

Don't get me wrong--many people I have talked with have not had a single problem with the complex and really like it here. The fitness facilities and the pool are REALLY nice, and the valet trash pickup is cool, but I would rather walk my own trash to the dumpster and pay a cheaper price, have quieter residents, better parking and nice management.

Again, this is just my opinion. Please don't take it as a definitive view of the complex or anything I give advice on. Try to get as many opinions as you can. And as Lane said, if we do have the Welcome Weekend, that would be a great time for you to talk to some of our classmates and find out where they live and how they like it--and also visit some of the other apartment complexes around here.

This sounds like the apartments I lived at when I went to UT!! :scared: :scared:

carlyle is the best 🙂 but i'm not biased or anything

i pay ~680 after water is added on (which aint bad) but it's a nice, quaint, quiet complex. we don't have heathens like kristen running amok, making all sorts of loud noises and parking cars in your spot 😀 the nice thing about living in such a small complex is the maintenance is addressed immediately, the people in the office are friendly and sometimes remember your name, and there's plenty of parking. you have to pay a little more for a covered spot and a remote for the gate (so you dont have to punch in a code every time you enter/exit) but it's not mandatory. we do get trash pickup and a decent little weight room too. and our pool is really nice when they get it up and running, although it's not as big as promontory's. (fyi - promontory also has tennis courts, volleyball, some kind of exercise class, 2 pools, etc - it's huge but it has amenities) (fyi again - the vintage has putting greens). i'm going to schedule a meeting with dr. jones early next week to talk about the welcome weekend - i'm thinking april 21-23 would work well since it's fiesta, we have a 3 day weekend, and it'll be right after our exams - so yall can come see this stuff for yourself rather than take our word for it.
our 80's prom will probably be moved back to next year so the MS0.5s can join us 🙂

Since we're speaking of apartments, does anyone know of a place that has a good deal on included basic cable, high speed internet, etc? I live in such a place here in TX and it's both cheap and awesome.

dont know of any legit hookups like that, but lots of people got 'lucky' with their cable signals 😀

same goes with internet - if you have a wireless card you can probably pick up quite a few signals. a buddy of mine brought his laptop over here and found 5 connections, none of them protected. free internet, anyone?

Seriously! No one seems to understand the concept of password protection on wireless networks.

not that I'm complaining. 😉

Hey just out of curiosity, I wanted to know how many people are waiting on decision from baylor or out of state school and will go to that school if accepted. Please let me know b/c, obviosly...

BUMP and Happy Friday!

This was a very short week for me....flew by like crazy! Man, I took a long essay test yesterday for a psych class that I am currently enrolled in (why? I don't know). Thank goodness there won't be essay tests in medical school. The muscles in my hands are still aching....

Anyway, it's Friday, Friday, FRIDAY!!!
