UTHSCSA Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anybody have an idea what a LMFU change after the pre-match would indicate? Mine changed today to 01/05. 😎

The LMFU is perhaps the most ingenious applicant-torturing statistic I've ever seen. It might mean that a mosquito landed on your file, that you've been definitively rejected to a school or schools where an interview wasn't even offered, or you've just been given a full-ride to UTSW and the governor would like to meet you personally.

I obviously don't know, but I have the same LMFU as you, and for some reason I felt excited about it. Someone PM-ed me saying they thought it was a bad thing though. I'd say it could be rankings being sent in, or maybe the end of schools' interview seasons, maybe rejections, anything really. I only interviewed at UTH, rejected at Galveston, applied to all schools except Baylor. Oh yeah, and I'm OOS.

I just wanted to drop this in for anyone looking for a house. I was referred to a real estate agent by the name of Simon Arcos, he is with Keller Williams there. He is a very good agent and has been a pleasure to work with. This weekend he and his wife missed taking their daughter to be fitted for her Quinceanera dress to show us houses. He has nearly 10 years of experience in the market and is an Aggressive deal maker with sellers.

If any are interested please pm me for his contact info. I will not receive any compensation for this and you don't need to use my name. Just tell him you were referred by another entering student if anything.

Good luck.

congrats on the uthscsa acceptance, but I wouldn't call it utsa. utsa and the health science center have nothing to do with each other other than being a part of the UT system and being in the same city. UTSA is a mediocre college at best and saying you go to UTSA in san antonio will certainly confuse a lot of people here if you mean you go to the health science center.

basically, be proud you got into the health science center, not utsa.

There is no reason to call any university "mediocre at best" and there is also no reason not to be proud of your school, whatever it may be. College is what you make out of it, not what other people think about it or what some meaningless "ranking" says.

Hey guys, I hope I can be joining you guys after the match on Feb. 15. However, I was wanting to ask if anyone knows for sure how many spots they have left for UTSA for the match. I am just curious. I had heard that they were going to try to fill only 50% of their seats with premath offers. Does anyone know if this is what they did?? Thanks for the help and hopefully I will be here in the next couple of weeks.

I was told by the 4th yr. student that called me after my acceptance that SA was not offering many early acceptances.......I think they probably still have 100+ spots.......I know for sure they have one additional spot--mine!

Good Luck

Bump FTHOI. Looking forward to making the transition from West Texas to South Texas.

So with this new system of acceptance, have students with multiple offers had to pick just one yet? It seems like doctor J said the other day that students had committed to attending UTHSCSA, but I may be wrong. Any of you MS0s want to fill me in.

The new system is a little complicated! Yes, people with multiple offers have had to pick one and reject the others. However, they can still try to get into a school that didn't make them a pre-match offer. So, in theory people could have "committed" to San Antonio (or any other school) by accepting a pre-match offer, but still rank a different school higher in the Feb. 15th match and end up at their higer-ranked school, voiding the pre-match "commitment".

As for the other question, I was told by my pre-med advisor that SA did not make as many pre-match offers as other schools.

We did make less pre offers and so we have more spots available for the match than the others, but I doubt it is a "100+". I think the best guess is that we have about forty spots available going into the match and then depending on how many people match up is how many we will have on top of that. A friend of mine that's in Houston said that they had less than that! I think the new system blows cause it really hurts late applicants. The main reason people apply late is to retake the MCAT, so they should have waited until after the MCAT become more available (i.e. 20+ tests/yr) to start this. Just my two cents.

only 40? i think im going to throw up...:scared:

Oh no, don't throw up. That's before people match up. People for whatever reason choose another school OVER UTHSCSA (I know, I don't get it either!). This will open up more spots for people. Don't worry. Plus that forty number is just my best guess, but I know for sure it is less then 100. I just didn't want people thinking that no one was accepting their UTHSCSA pre-offer by people saying we have "tons of open spots". I have a friend on the recruitment committee, I'll ask him if he can get a more accurate number of how many open spots we have. You can PM me later and I'll see what I can figure out. Good luck though and just relax.🙂

This is part of the email i received from UTHSCSA after i got my acceptance letter Nov 16th...

"First we have accepted students (and continue to accept students) to make sure we only fill about 50% of our class. The reason from this is that we do not want those interviewing after Nov. 15th to consider that their interview was meaningless and there was no chance at acceptance."

I received this email on Dec 8th... I am sure there will be about 1/2 of the spots left for the match day....don't worry!!!
Good Luck!

brazilianguy,

Do you train in Jiu-Jitsu or Vale Tudo?

Just curious.

I am a Jiu-Jiutsu guy, but i ve also done some vale tudo(just for fun)... right now I don't have a gym...but i've studied under Carlos Machado(Dallas), Roberto Maya(Boston), and Sarayva(back in Brazil)...

u?

Pittman/Lubbock Vandry/Austin

If you trained under Machado in Dallas these names are probably familiar to you.

Are you going to train whilst in school? I have been out of it for three years but would be interested in starting back up if there is a decent place in SA.

Glad to see there is another choker in the group.......

I know a Brazilian guy down there is SA ... his name is Bruno Azevedo...i think...anyways... here is my email if you want to get in contact with me once we start medschool... ([email protected])

They were his first BB's in Texas, I believe. They received their BB's when Travis Lutter did.

Anyway, I will definitely be in contact once school starts. I haven't rolled in some time now.

I'm looking forward to the thread explosion in the next day or so. 👍

I matched and I look forward to meeting yall and seeing yall in school next year. 🙂

I pre-matched and matched....I'm looking forward to SA! See you all in late July.

Word is that there will be some sort of welcome weekend the weekend of March 23rd/24th. I guess we will get info on it in the coming weeks.

Hi all. Congratulations to everyone who matched and prematched. I can't wait to meet all of you....

Like our predecessors, there's a forum so that we can all get in touch with each other over the coming months before school starts without having to get onto SDN all the time...

Yep just got an email about that from admissions. They're sending out the details via regular mail.

EDIT: Anyone got the 411 on how much health insurance is going to cost?

Hello, I just recently matched into UTHSCSA. I'm very excited about attending and meeting everyone. I was just wondering if you current students could help me out on housing. I'm not really sure where to start; I noticed a page on the website that gave a phone number to call about available housing, is that the best way to go? Anybody want to help me out? Thanks a lot..

It really depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for apartments, renting a house, or buying a house? Are you married or looking to find a roomate? My advice would be different depending on what you are looking for. Also congrats again to everyone who matched!

I've got a friend who is a new real estate agent here - her email address is:
[email protected]

I live in the neighborhood of Kenton Place - which is about 2 miles or less from the school. It's quiet and the yards are small (parking lot sized front yards, back yards are probably 4-5x that size.). There are a ton of houses for sale or rent over here now - I counted 13 on a walk this weekend. And of course - we rent and will be leaving the last part of may! The houses are usually 3 BR, 2 story cookie cutter KB homes. There isn't street parking in the neighborhood, just driveway or visitor. There's 3 Kenton neighborhoods over here.

As far as apartments go - most of my classmates live in either the Lodge, the Medical Center Apartments, or the wealthier ones live at the Vintage. All are walking distance (a couple of blocks) from the school. A hidden gem is the San Antonio Station which is right accross from school and is more wooded/hidden than the others. There are some new luxury condos being built right accross the street from the school too, but I've got no other info than having seen the sign that that's why they cleared the lots.

There are some duplexes on Cinammon Creek road that have been recently repainted, but I've never been in them.

I got some advice when I moved here to look in the area bordered by 410 and 1604 and I-10 and Bandera road. That way you don't have traffic on your way to school, or much anyways. Just watch out for deer - I had to stop 4 times on my way in last week for them.

Good luck - you can PM me if you need more info.

I posted this on the facebook page but we have used Simon Arcos with Keller Williams and he is a tireless worker, ridiculously hard-working really.

[email protected]

Another of our classmates is in the process of using him, hopefully she will post with her experiences.

Has everyone RSVP'd for the Welcome Weekend! They sent out info yesterday by email!!! What have other MS0's done so far to start preparing for this coming year? I don't know if I should wait until Welcome Weekend to really start considering where I want to live or should I start now. I talked to John from the financial aid office and he said Financial Aid Award info will be sent in mid-April....It's difficult to decide for sure right now where I want to live because for me so much depends on how much I will be awarded through financial aid...any thoughts?

Speaking of financial aid, I suppose we should have submitted FAFSA by now? And if not, will this affect awards? And, it has been asked elsewhere, but list or do not list parental information?

I never received an email about Welcome Weekend. Do you have the email?

These are more places I have heard classmates of mine live (in addition to what Tired already posted...)

Neighborhoods
Rockwell Village - Gated, 2 miles from school, new (still building houses actually)
http://http://www.woodside-homes.com/ssi/v2/8CommPageV2.asp?Community=Rockwell%20Village&State=TX

The Plaza on Whitby Road. Duplexes.
http://http://www.greenborohomes-sa.com/TPOWR_community_info.html

The villages on Northgate ( its on Lamb off of babcock, not sure if this is the correct name) More duplexes I believe.

Other Apartments:
Melograno Apartments on Hamilton Wolfe
http://http://www.melogranoapartments.com/home.htm

Carlyle Place Apartments - one tankmate lives here and loves it. on Babcock

Ventana Apartments. I think it is near Huebner Oaks Shopping Center, and I believe they are $$$.

Well this is all I can think of for now! I suggest driving around the area if you get a free weekend.

Could someone email me the invite at [email protected]. I'd like to go and want more info. Thanks.

Kristi

Kristi:I'd encourage you to contact Belinda Chapa [[email protected]]
She can forward you the email and also make sure they have an alternate way to contact you incase their (future) emails don't reach you. BTW we need to RSVP by the 16th of March so you have some time. Let us know if you can't get a hold of her.

Has anyone looked at ATT U-VERSE? It's available in San Antonio but not sure if it's there near the campus. I'm guessing our other choice will be time warner cable for internet/tv/phone. I've heard the quality on U-Verse isn't as good (10Mb/s for IPTV over fiber), but they have MHD. 👍 😀

Kristi,

I have forwarded the email so you can RSVP.

Anyone else: email me at [email protected] if you have not received the email I can go ahead and forward it to you.

Jose

🙄

Thanks but a couple people forwarded the email and the school also finally sent it after I double checked my contact info with them. Thanks for all your help though!

Any info on the neighborhood Glen Oaks or Glen Oaks Park?

Also, are there any areas/neighborhoods/apartments that we should certainly avoid?

What's everyone doing for accomodations/transportation on welcome weekend? I was planning to rent a car if someone needs a ride.

If I could ask you all one favor:
I'm writing/compiling a FAQ thread for TMDSAS. I thought linking each school name to the SDN Wiki entry would be a good idea. I've started editing UT-H's wiki entry (because I know the most about it) but if you guys could enter in the information for San Antonio, that would REALLY help me out 🙂

San Antonio

Sorry I am not familiar with that neighborhood...I have a friend who went to Trinity University and he told me to avoid The Lodge Apts and the Medical Center Apts.....if I find out more than I will post it on here....

Not sure where Glen Oaks is... do you have street names or intersections?

The area near I-10 frontage road by Magic st is really sketchy, avoid it. San Antonio is a little weird in that it's kinda like a spread out small town - nearly everything in the medical center area is safe... just don't hang out between Univ Hosp and VA hospital - the bus stops there are SCARY! There is a lot of tagging that goes on, mainly inside Loop 410. Fredricksburg road gets much scarier when you get inside 410 also.

Other apartments that classmates live at: Promontory Pointe, another brand new one that I'm blanking on the name on Medical Drive near I-10. There's a brand new (like 3 months ago) apartment complex on Callaghan that should be about 10 minute drive to school.

Away from the medical center - some other classmates live in Alamo Heights area - small, older homes with a great school district - therefore more expensive area. Others live in Stone Oak area - also more expensive, cookie cutter type neighborhoods.

The Great Northwest is a large neighborhood near Bandera just before 1604 - the homes are older 60's-80's with mature trees - neighborhood pools, tennis courts, etc. It's about a 20-30 minute drive to campus.

If you are more into space/country lifestyle - Helotes is a bit further out - past 1604 on Bandera Rd - they recently fought off a Walmart invasion... Kinda quirky little town. There's been a big uproar here about the mulch fire going out there - it's a composting site that's been burning for a few months now, but they don't want to contaminate the groundwater by dousing it so everybody just has to breathe in the nasty fumes. If the wind blows right, we get the burning smells in the medical center area.

Thanks for the update.

4800 block of Cambray is in the Glen Oaks subdivision and 7000 block of Honey Hill is in the Honey Hill and/or Summit North subdivisions. I am looking for an older house/neighborhood (a 60s-70s-style garden home would be awesome 😍 ) that is pretty close (walking/biking distance to school) and safe. I have come across a few in Glen Oaks and Honey Hill, and mapquest says they are within a couple of miles of the school, but I am unfamiliar with the area and figure a couple of miles could span good and bad neighborhoods.

Anyway, thanks for all the help.

I'll look at the one behind oak hills CC sometime this week and let you know what it looks like - I drive down Callaghan and F'burg all the time, but haven't ever gotten off in that area.

I couldn't get the Honey Hill one to map.

Here is a link to another forum talking about neighborhoods in SA with mid century modern homes.
http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-antonio/25165-78228-a.html

Oak Hills is really close to the school. You might check the neighborhood off Merkens street (which comes off of Wurzbach between Bandera and Babcock) - it has similar homes to the ones you described... it's not far from the Glen Ridge neighborhood you mentioned... I don't know the name of the neighborhood, it might actually be part of Glen Ridge. A friend lives over there - has a great, really cute house in an older neighborhood where every house looks different. Fairly easy walk to school.

Another area a little further away is off Callaghan - road into neighborhood is Belvoir. Similar type homes.

A caution about biking in SA - the cars really don't yield! We've had several biking accidents because there are hardly any bike lanes (none in the medical center area) or shoulders.
