Has anybody heard about this? They just sent me an email about it and there weren't many details..

Heres part of the email:

Greetings from the Department of Dental Laboratory Sciences at The
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dental Laboratory
Sciences (DLS) is a department in the School of Allied Health Sciences at
the UTHSCSA.

Please let me share information on an exciting new track we are introducing
in the 2008 fall semester. The Pre-Dental track is a dynamic new track in
our ever-developing Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Dental Laboratory
Sciences. This curriculum concentrates on knowledge, skills, and attitudes
necessary to better prepare students for the dental school application
process.

By popular demand, and at the suggestion of several dentists who are also
alumni of our dental technology program, we have developed this track that
plays a major role in preparing students for dental school admission, as
well as provide much-needed technical skills to support their dental school
training.

With your background in science and other dental related courses, we have
identified you as a potential candidate who would perform exceptionally well
in our one-year, pre-dental preparatory-type B.S. Degree program.

Any uthscsa students that can give me more info and if it can actually help on getting admitted to dental school?

It is a new program, so I don't think any of us can really help you out. The only thing I can gain from the email is that it sounds like you will be taught a lot of skills in the dental lab technology, so when you do start dental school, you will already know how to do a lot of the lab work. Your best bet is to call the school and ask about the courses you will take and any other information you want to know since it is a new program.

i luve how they reject me one day...and then the next day i get an email about their new pre-dent major wooo hooo im so excited lol

I think this program is a waste of time.... if they think you are a good candidate, then they should accept you to dental school. This program gives you no guarantee that they will accept you after you are done with a pointless second B.S. degree. What if they don't? Then you just wasted a lot of time and a lot of your money, and you will not be able to use this degree for anything else.

Well, I requested more information. I want to know what the chances are of getting into San Antonio if you finish this new program. I asked since Friday. If i hear anything, ill post it. 😴

I'd also ask if you are going to be taught by the same faculty that teach dental students and by people that are on the admissions committee.

If you think you can seal the deal by showing adcom members what you are made of then it's probably not a bad deal, but if you're going to be taught by people in a department that don't have much influence over dental admissions then I don't see the point in doing it.

I just got accepted to this 1 year program. I am aware of the fact that after the successful completion of the program, there is no guarantee of acceptance to Dental School but I think your application would show your continued interest in dentistry. Yes, I am fro Texas and this is the closest I could find for me to do to enhance my chances for admission to Dental School.
