So I've noted that UTMB's pediatric residency program is on probation, and that they have a new program director. Can anyone give any insight into this situation? Is the problem something that is likely to be fixed before the inspection this summer?

I would like to know the answer to this as well. The interview email I got from UTMB said nothing about being on probation. LSU mentioned that they were on probation in their interview email to me. This may not be the case but not mentioning their probation status gives me the impression that they may be hiding something. I heard that it might be because of the hurricane but that is not very specific.

From what I understand (I heard an explanation given to someone else) at the time of the accreditation visit, they were still reopening beds after Hurricane Ike. The peds program was put on probation due to low patient census/not enough pediatric beds (I'm not sure of the exact wording, but that was the gist of the problem). The program believes that they now have enough beds/patients to satisfy ACGME requirements (as the hospital has continued to open more beds, etc. and doesn't feel it will be an ongoing problem. Somewhat related, PICU rotations will be done somewhere other than UTMB (I think the choices are somewhere in Houston or Driscoll in Corpus, but I can't swear to it) for the some future amount of time as currently UTMB does not have the patient load/facilities to support a full PICU rotation. (NICU is NOT a problem--babies we've got.)
