I can't figure out which school is better to attend. Houston has lovely city life. UTMB is a much older school with lots of hospitals and better reputation possibly. Everyone pick one and state a reason.

Yep, it's definitely that time of year (for vs. threads). I expect to see UTSW vs. Baylor pop up some time soon, then Tech vs. A&M, UTH vs. UTSA.

Let me go get the popcorn... :corny:

Ok, so normally I would say UTH (TMC rocks, 'nuff said)...but I'm a gonna go with UTMB in your case. Because I want that UTH spot!!!!!!!! 😀 Good luck to ya, both our great schools. 😉

...:corny:

I know TMC rocks but is it accessible to UTH students? Are the faculty physicians available to bring opportunities to UTH students? I also felt uncomfortable competing with Baylor students in the same city....

Err... have you actually interviewed at UTH because I doubt you'd be saying those things if you did.

Competing with Baylor students? You don't work in the same hospitals so there's no "competition" to speak of.

 Sorry, but UTH is right smack in the middle of the TMC...I work there every day. If there is some place in particular you would like to do a rotation, I bet they would work hard to get that started for you. And the faculty there is AMAZING, very nice and willing to help (some even on Saturdays I hear). Don't worry about Baylor, you wouldn't interact much with them anyway.

i think UTMB is a good choice......houston too is great, but for me, the beach sound more convincing at galveston 😛.
After all...Tech is home for me. Weck'em Tech👍

More hospitals than the TMC? 'Hopefully I will have to choose between them when I apply and I will almost certainly choose uth

I'm a MS1 at UTH and yes, opportunities are available to students. Since MD Anderson is associated with UTH, you're allowed to shadow physicians over there. I also had the fear that Baylor students would compete with me (this was before I interviewed) but as someone mentioned, you do rotations at different hospitals. The closest I have gotten to anything remotely related to Baylor is walking in front of the school because my bus stops there.

Does UTMB stream lectures? That has saved my butt here at UTH.

i think you get an option to rank if you were not accepted during the rolling admissions cycle. the fact that a school is ranked 1st by an applicant does not necessarily mean a spot there is secure.
hopefull all SDN 'ERS get their first or second choice and be happy.. 👍

Which school has better faculty? in terms of teaching, rotations, and sending you to places after med school?

However, because UTH is only going to give out 10% pre-match offers, you'll have to rank UTH the highest if you want the best chance to even see an acceptance offer from their school.

You're beginning to ask questions that no one can reasonably answer, because no one is going to be a student at both schools. We cannot do your work for you.

I have no idea how the texas system works yet since I'm not applying. I also think I lost my Texas residency which makes me very sad and I hope I can find a way to regain it. Currently I think I have no state residency if thats possible.

I like UTMB as well, but I also think of MD Anderson when living in Houston. As well all know, that is a great hospital to learn in.

That's what I thought too...haha. It's always the same pairs....interesting. We should mix it up, and start a Baylor vs A&M thread, or Tech vs ....Dartmouth.

Those threads would just hurt feelings... 😉

hey...has anymore heard anything about the new 4yrs medical school program Tech is opening in El paso?

There are a ton of factors that go into this decision. What is interesting to me about this argument is that although these schools have similar entrance scores and are relatively close to one another, I seriously doubt if two schools in texas are more different. Houston is much more traditional in that they have full days of lecture while galveston has half days plus pbl. Houston has a vast array of clinical opportunities that might exceed that of UTMB but galveston typically has higher step I scores. Galveston has a giant preceptorship program with almost every speciality represented. Look at the school's websites, take in the information from the interview day, and it should become very clear to you which is a better fit for you. Plus, UTMB offers the clinical years in Austin to a number of its 3rd and 4th years, so if the small size of Galveston scares you, you could be in a big city halfway through which might influence a decision. Most of all though, they are two great schools that have amazing and unique qualities and I wish you the best of luck with your choice down the road.

Galveston is about as nasty as I don't know what. I won't even tap my finger in that water😱

The beach... is not a reason to pick UTMB. Maybe a Cali or Florida school (and that's a big maybe), but not UTMB. Sorry. 🙁

Exactly! Yoy go there because you want to be there....not for the nasty water and numerous food places lining up the Seawall

the truth is i do not even know how to swim so either or does not really sweep my feets. lol.lol.lol. i just like to look at water even though here in west texas....our atmosphere is just almost brown(dust particles.) For me, choosing a medical school will be based more on my family since i consider my self a non-trad. i have a husband and a son and possibly one on the way...i'll prefer to stay close to my support system. Therefore, Tech is my #one. i will go anywhere in the country though..but just in case i have choices i'll always stay closer to my family.

Should I be concern with the discrepancy of Step 1 scores (UTMB being significantly higher)? You'd think their similar MCAT averages would correlate to Step 1.

I don't think UTH has full day lectures except for maybe 1st semester, and they do have some pbl 2nd year...just to clarify.

Yeah, I live in El Paso. What do you want to know? They just secured most of the funding for the school. Some big oil guy in El Paso just donated like 50 million to the school so they're gonna name it after him. They're still in the process of hiring all the faculty and staff. It'll be recruiting students for the class of 2013, so you'll be able to apply this next application season.

It's a great opportunity for El Paso because we are a very underserved area. There are only about 900 doctors in the El Paso area for a population of 850,000. Also, going to school here would present a very unique opportunity to learn about border health and how it greatly differs from other areas of the country. That's about all I got. Let me know if you want to know more about El Paso!

I am not a beach person, and yes, the water is very silty. The ocean was a draw for me though because it's just so big it keeps everything else in perspective, so-to-speak.

Is the new school going to be affilated with Tech? Or is it an eighth allopathic school in Texas?

i am not 100% sure but i think it will be affiliated with TEch.
there will be 40matriculants for class of 2013, and 80 matriculants for class of 2014. it will be great to be in the first class....like after 20yrs your picture maybe in the hall of fame as one the first students.lol. cool. i will also love EL Paso..i lived in Africa for 15yrs so am all about dedicating my life to the underdeserve population...we went for a health trip to juarez, mexico my senior year in nursing school. it was awesome.

Whichever one takes you is better.

With similar reasoning... I pick UTMB... because I didn't apply to UTH.

Have you even interviewed at A&M to know what you're talking about? I doubt anyone will be comparing A&M and Tech. They're very different schools that cater to different students.

This applies to most schools in Texas. After interviewing I've realized that you can't compare them because they are so disimilar and have their +/-. Bottom line: go to the school that you felt was the "best fit" everything else is secondary. People determine their board scores, not the schools and wherever you go in Texas you'll get great clinical exposure.

Also someone was talking abou the Galveston beach. . . its actually cleaner than most people think. google it.

I picked UTH last year mostly for the Medical Center, city life, student body, and faculty. Our Step 1 scores have historically been lower than UTMB's, but each recruited class has been more competitive than the last, so expect those to go up in coming years.

I almost ended up at UTMB (last-minute move off the UTH waitlist), and I would have been happy there; if you're going to be scared of something, it's not the water, it's the rest of the city. A little, well, run-down.

I was just randomly picking schools to poke fun at the insaneness of comparing XYZ school. See my "Texas schools vs. the rest of the country" thread (except some people actually took me seriously...)

I don't think they are THAT different...they seem to be the somewhat rural medical schools of all the TX schools.

WHAT?! Thats awesome, I love austin and I've always been so mad that there isn't a med school there. Unfortunately you probably don't have any time to enjoy Austin in your 3rd or 4th year. Plus Austin is too safe a city for EM.

Uhh... I've volunteered at the hospital where UTMB students rotate at and have definitely seen some weird cases such as.. motorcycle accident without helmet! And the guy was a surgeon too!

apologies man, didn't mean to jump down your throat. I just hate these X school vs. Y school threads that people make up.

Also, if Austin is appealing to folks. Starting in 2008 A&M will have a dual campus in Austin. 2 years at CS and 2 years at Austin. Someone correct me if I am wrong. . .

Motorcycle accident without a helmet is not that weird. Not enough people get shot or stabbed in Austin for my taste. 😛

As much as I love Austin I would not sacrifice 2 years in College Station.

Austin should get it's own med school.

For some reason I hate the idea of having to move for the clinical years. I prefer to stay where I started. Clinical years will be bad enough without having to learn another city

I'm pretty sure that's Temple you're thinking of, not Austin.

From what I've heard 4th years say, they prefer the EM rotation in Austin to the one in Galveston.

Uhh... I've volunteered at the hospital where UTMB students rotate at and have definitely seen some weird cases such as.. motorcycle accident without helmet! And the guy was a surgeon too!

Another student was telling me about some of the weird Pysch cases encountered at Brackenridge (I think that was the one)...People cutting off their member 'cause its evil...that sort of thing.

Should I be concern with the discrepancy of Step 1 scores (UTMB being significantly higher)? You'd think their similar MCAT averages would correlate to Step 1.

UTMB will "encourage" students who they do not feel will pass step 1 to delay their taking of the exam. This is one reason why UTMB has high step 1 scores.

Austin certainly has its fair share of psych cases, I was referring more to trauma though.

😵

That's news to me. I just see the typical stabbings, heart attack, accident stuff.

Interesting, so they don't force the students to pass Step 1 prior to rotations? I probably should've asked this question when I was there.

I thought Austin is getting its own medical school within 5 years or so. Can anyone corroborate this?
