UTMB Galveston vs. UT Houston

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interesting, so they don't force the students to pass Step 1 prior to rotations? I probably should've asked this question when I was there.

I thought Austin is getting its own medical school within 5 years or so. Can anyone corroborate this?

No, you have to pass Step 1 before clinicals.

There's been talk of a med school in Austin. I wouldn't expect one within that timeframe, but who knows.

Someone mentioned A&M having a branch in Austin. What they'll be starting in a while (I don't remember how long) is a Round Rock campus.
That's all.

And I too, if I get in to both, am torn between UTMB and UTH.

Again, Round Rock is not Austin. =/

😵

That's news to me. I just see the typical stabbings, heart attack, accident stuff.

Really? Maybe they just don't seek medical care. Have you ever been on a bus in austin

As much as I like Austin I would not want to go to a med school that was just opened.

I'm glad we all get a geography lesson on texas, because nobody else has ever been to austin. I think most people say suburban areas within 15-30 minutes of downtown can be included in that city's vicinity, especially within texas.

Doesn't feel like it if you don't have a car ;[

That's what public transportation is for. Oh wait, I almost forgot...

Oh, and to the OP, I can't say honestly. Visited UTMB and it seemed like a nice place, though I haven't toured UTH yet. I've lived in Houston almost my entire life though, so that reason alone almost makes me want to choose UTMB first. Humidity, traffic -> 🙄

The main reason I would want to go to UT Houston is the medical center.
The main reasons I would choose Galveston are: more laid back atmosphere, 1/2 day lectures, and Austin.

1/2 day lectures shouldn't even be a consideration when comparing UTH and UTMB. With video recorded lectures, you don't even have to go to class at UTH.

Ditto. I'm a poor college student. I only care about things in walking distance. Round Rock is FAR to me. 😛

Turns out people usually only go to Austin for maybe their OB/GYN rotation. It's not that popular to stay a full year, regardless of how much you like those young college girls/guys. 😛

I'm pretty sure that's Temple you're thinking of, not Austin.

Just verified it. A&M has multiple programs now apparently:

4 years in Temple
4 years in CS
2/2 CS & Temple
2/2 CS & Austin
2/2 CS & Corpus Christi

Alright, I'm done hijacking this thread. Back to discussion about UTH and UTMB.

Not quite. All 36 full year positions are filled, up from 19 year before. Every required 3rd year rotation was at capacity, except for psych, and 145 4th year rotations will be done this year, I think. They are expanding the program.

Thanks...didn't know that. Hmm...A&M is becoming a correspondence med school...haha.

Oh, I guess it's changing. When I interviewed there, a 4th year made it sound like most people don't spend an entire year there because they don't want to, not because of few spots.

Now that this actually affects me, anybody else have any opinions? I'm sitting on an acceptance from UTMB, but I don't know if I should rank UTH 1 in the match or not. Decisions, decisions...

Whatever you do, don't overanalyze...keep it simple. Ask yourself:

Would you like to live in Houston or Galveston? Is one much closer to family?

What are your feelings on PBL and block tests?

Did you get any particular gut feeling at either?

UTH is to UTMB as....
NY is to Jamaica
glitz is to charm

That NY vs. Jamaica one is true:laugh: but not in beach as in crime

I was lucky enough to receive a pre-match offer to UTH, and here are a few reasons I am going to rank them as #1 for the match, rather than UTSW or UTMB...

1) I want to do a residency in the medical center, and I think the contacts I could make during med school would help facilitate that.

2) The Med Center itself. I am aware that I won't have the access to it the way in which a resident would, but just the options for rotations, the prestiege, as well as the general feel of excitement that is present is very attractive as a setting for a medical school.

3) The students are friendly, fun, and socially normal. I have several friends that go there, and they are all the sort of outgoing, intelligent people that I would normally seek out as friends. You have to remember that you are going to be spending the majority of your time with these people, so pick a school with a student body you could really click with.

4) Houston itself is a great city. It is an easy place for a spouse or significant other to find a job, cool areas to live, a thriving night life and arts scene. Don't let the humidity and traffic deter you, there are so many great things Houston has to offer...and I'm an Austinite...so you know I'm city-eleitest!

UTMB will "encourage" students who they do not feel will pass step 1 to delay their taking of the exam. This is one reason why UTMB has high step 1 scores.

The "encouraging" thing has more to do with the student not being prepared than the school not wanting to lower their scores. They keep track of our progress through courses and if they feel we are not adequately prepared, they have intensive prep classes for the USMLE that all students are invited to take. Very few students actually postpone taking the exam and those who do have significant reasons (family issues, pregnancy, illness, etc.)

UT-Houston... hands down. Better curriculum, bigger name, better training sites. The only thing to do in Galveston is get wasted and possibly go boating.

UT houston is not a bigger name than UTMB. There is not a residency director in Texas or the United States that thinks this is true. It is not even the biggest name in the TMC (read Baylor).

Don't forget Dimitri's and Ocean Cabaret just before you hit the island.

Be very careful about UTMB. I have it from several good sources that the UTMB med school (not necessarily the other parts of UTMB) are moving to Austin within the next 5 years or so. At first they were going to start up a totally new med school in Austin, but behind the scenes discussions with state legislators put a damper on this idea.

This comes from people in positions of authority at UTMB, UTH, and Texas A&M. I doubt all of them are wrong. If you ask the UTMB people on the record, they will deny it, but I think the writing is on the wall.

As for Texas A&M, they are indeed expanding to a 4 year program in Temple and a 2 year clinical rotation site at Round Rock. A&M just opened a new medical center there (i'll stay out of the debate as to whether Round Rock is really part of Austin or not)

Naaa...won't happen.
