Hey what's up, I just got accepted to UTMB and was wondering if any UTMB students could provide their honest impressions of the school- the good, bad and the ugly.

For example, how would you rate your school in preparing you for Step 1? Was the integrated-style curriculum effective? How would you all rate the helpfulness and strength of your professors? What are the biggest weaknesses and/or unique strengths?

I'm comin from VA and would be leaving behind a girl I have gotten really serious with, so I'm trying to sort out all of the pros and cons. Yet and still, I definitely feel a calling to move away and start somewhere fresh on my own.

Any thoughts are much appreciated....thanks in advance.

Wow, where to start on the good old UTMB. As a fourth year there with only a few months left to go, I can look back and say that it, overall, was a pretty good experience. As far as the integrated curricilum, I loved it. The problem-based learning system worked really well for me. A lot of people tend to complain about, and it's true that it's not always the most efficient way to learn, but you learn really well. I also loved only focusing on one class at a time during the first two years.
As far as third year, it will suck no matter where you are, so you may as well come to terms with it. You won't sleep much, and you will be busier than you ever really wanted to be. However, the faculty are overwhelming nice, and I would say that a majority of residents I have worked with have been pleaseant. That, of course, varies with specialty.
Fourth year is just chill.

Anyway, the thing that makes Galveston, well Galveston is the fact that it is an island. A lot of people live on the island, and there are lots of cheap apartments and houses. There is also a whole lot of ghetto, but overall a fairly safe place. I personally have never lived on the island, and have been very happy with that decision. I currently live in Texas City, which is about half way between Galveston and the southern end of Houston. In fact, come March 16, I may have a really nice house you can buy : )

But seriously, I feel like I recieved a superb education. I did well on the boards and at least interviewed at really prestigious programs. Like any state funded facility, there will be things that seem arcane and outdated, but they really focus on teaching and do a good job.

But the weather sucks. Hot all the damn time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Pedisam, that helps tremendously. I too was accepted to UTMB and was wondering what other students thought of it. Any other takers on the board? Your impressions are appreciated!

First of all, congratulations on your forthcoming matriculation down to UTMB. I am in the backside of second year so I can not give as much insight into what you will experience the last two years but I can give you current info on the first two years. Please private message me for the real details because there are too many flamers to post some of the stuff that I can tell you.

Good luck. Signing off from Galvatraz.
