UVA anybody?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thanks for the housing tips!

I'll be there the last week in May to look for places to live. And then moving mid-June. Maybe whoever's in the area can get together to hang out.

Poker? 😛

Tobiko,
funny yu should say that--I just remarked to my girlfriend last weekend that one of my first priorities was establishing and regular poker game. I'm down-unfortunately, I do not know when I will be moving ,but it looks like early august, since I have responsibilities in Baltimore until then. Take it easy.

Poker?? What do you normally play? Here at my ugrad we have a group of about 10-14 people that get together once a week and play dealer's choice and a hold'em tournament. It has been a real blast and I'm hoping to find a good game in c-ville next semester.

Most students live off JPA, Brandon Avenue, 14th Street, Wertland Street, or Ivy Road. A few linger in the downtown areas, but the housing near the mall gets expensive and far away.

My vote would be for the nearest apartments off JPA and Brandon Ave. next to the hospital area (i.e. Woodrow Apartments, 600 Brandon, etc.) or the 14th/Wertland St. area, since both places have relatively cheap apartments within walking distance of the med center. However, if you live in the 14th/Wertland St. apartments, be prepared for a ruckus going on outside almost every weekend. The proximity of those apartments to the Corner and Rugby Road frats/sororities attracts a lot of party hardy visitors and residents.

Best of luck apartment hunting guys. 🙂 If you have other questions, you can PM me.

Normally hold 'em, but occasionally stud varieties, but I might have lost my touch there since it has been a while. Sounds like we might have the beginnings of a steady game here.

Definitely Hold 'em! Tourny style.

you've totally perked up my day... as I'm leaving my regular game up here in Boston... 🙁

Anyone's who's lost their touch is most welcome 😉

haha-very funny
yea, I suck (and probably don't even play "tournament style"). My friends and I make it pretty casual.

However we play is fine by me. Just as long as I get my fix...

Count me in! 🙂 Some of the people I play with call crazy games. Burnman is one of the strangest...everyone is dealt five cards, four down, last one up. Then the high card on the table is labeled burnman and has to decide if he/she wants to stay in. If you lose, you match the pot, and the game goes on (multiple redeals) until everyone folds, or the burnman walks without anyone calling. I think hold'em is definitely the game that takes the most skill though. Anyone can get a good hand in other games, but it is really something to bluff people out of their good hands.

PS- Anyone still looking for a roomate? I haven't found a place yet.

Burnman sounds very strange... when are you going to be in C'ville, AS1? August or earlier?

I should be in town starting Aug 1st. I have a lease ending on Aug 1st, so I will be moving stuff then or a week earlier. I guess that leaves two weeks to get used to c-ville before the orientation begins.

I saw that you are moving in mid-june. Do you have a job lined up or are you just gonna kick back and enjoy your last real leisure time?

I'm going to be working a bit, but I also want to relax and get to know the place better before school starts...maybe do some fishing. I hope it's not ridiculously hot during the summer.

I just got my financial aid package yesterday and was kind of surprised by the in-state tuition... do I remember wrong or did tuition go up by $4000 (~18%)?!?!?! 22 up to 26K?!

And I have another question. Does anybody know if the numbers they list for years 1-4 are what we're going to pay or what is being paid this year, meaning is our tuition next year going to be ~24, or is it going to go up again for us?

this "in-state" tuition is killing me! Good thing the out of state tuition didn't go up by the same percentage! They'd be paying $42K!

I haven't gotten financial aid package yet, but yeah, our tuition is way too expensive. But oh well, if you go to private or out of state school, you pay 10k more per year. So I'll live with it...

For some reason, in-state tuition goes down by a couple thousand over the four years you are a student (I noticed this downward trend in the financial aid info. they gave us at the interview). It stays constant for out-of-state students. I don't know the reason for the tuition trends, but it looks like in- and out-of-state students alike are protected from future tuition hikes.

Bad news guys...

I just called the financial aid office and they said that our tuition will probably go up 2nd year and so on...those tuitions listed are for the CURRENT year only!!! So we'll probably be paying at least 7-8% more than the 24K listed for 2nd year. assuming an 8% increase that's ~26K. damn...I'm pissed. 😡

As a UVA med student I can tell you that the tuition rate go up every year. I'm out of state so it really sucks for me. It was 29K last year, then it went to 34K and now its 36K. As long as VA is in a budget crisis expect tuition to increase every year. I bet out of state tuition will be 40K by the time I graduate. 😡

Yea, out of state tuition is really high, and got no grant money, which sucks. Lots of penny pinching going on. Im gonna be in C-ville this weekend to look at some apartments.

UVa and MCV are two of the most expensive "state" schools in the country. The commonwealth of Virginia seriously needs to reconstruct its education finances if it wants better retention of state students from pursuing out-of-state options. UNC and UT-SW set good examples-- dirt cheap tuition and even more highly regarded than any of the Virginia schools. Virginia residents would be paying ~10K a year more to go out-of-state, chump change when considering the basis of your medical education. The yearly tuition hikes with no end in sight aren't helping the cause.

Hey benjo,

how did apartment hunting go? Where did you look? Were there any great deals for June?

Apt hunting went pretty well, I guess. I only looked at three options. One of the places was completelyout of the question--strange roommates, dark, dank, and too far from campus. The other two were pretty close to campus, but differed in price and amenities. I think I may eat the extra $75/month for all the great stuff in the more expensive place. By the way, my search was almost completely limited to the postings the SOM sent us in April. What are your plans for housing?

I'm not sure...I was going to go down there in two weeks to look, rush to find a place and move in June, but my cousin has a place he's subletting, so I'm thinking of doing that and taking more time to look... I don't know if I should just sign a lease for a 2BR place and try to find a roommate or live alone for a year, get to know more people and then room with someone next year. do you mind if I ask where you're going to live and how much you're paying? how many people you're living with? I guess I have to get my ass in gear...I'm so dreading moving all my stuff...I have WAAAAY too much.

Tobiko-my first choice is a 4-bedroom apartment with 3other med students, and that is on JPA abotu 10 minutes from class, and is $470/month. My second choice is about the same distance, and is about $400, but lacks a ton of the amenities--it is well worth the $70 per month in my opinion. If for some reason I can't get either of those, well, I am f*cked. Take it easy. What are you gonna be doing in C-ville all summer, by the way?

If you want additional housing ideas, check out the online classifieds in these local papers:

www.c-ville.com

www.readthehook.com

There are some good listings here for apartments/houses in the JPA and downtown areas. I'll be living downtown in a two-bedroom house.

I'm going to be starting some research down there. But mostly I'm hoping to relax and get to know the area before school starts...maybe if enough people are in the area before Aug 16th, we can do some hiking or something...

i'll be in town starting mid-july, but beginning work soon at the cell culture core lab and driving in from my family's home in staunton (about 45 min. west). has anyone checked out the apts in the slick brochures they sent in the package? they looked pretty sweet. looking forward to meeting everyone...a hiking trip sounds great. i hear there're some pretty good rapids around too, if anyone's into kayaking. i've always wanted to go. any feedback?

Speaking of hiking, when I was visiting C-ville to look for apartments, a couple of 2nd year students told me there is an optional pre-orientation 2- or 2-day hiking trip. Sounds like you all would definitely be itnerested, so just keep that in mind.
I just signed my lease, after a lot of bullsh-t. If anyone is interested in a nice place to live, there are still a few bedrooms available in a graduate student housing complex, and there are a couple of rooms reserved solely for med students. I went through Woodard Properties--jsut do a search.
They are nice rooms with individual bathrooms in a 4-bedrooms suite, at about $450 a month, plus utilities.
Anyway, UVA people, keep posting.

Ooh! Kayaking! count me in

I've been looking up rates for trucks to move my crap and it's SOOOOO expensive! I'm thinking I'll probably just hire movers.

just a couple more weeks here in Boston. I'm so sad... 🙁

just thought id mention that it is impossible to get in-state residency tuition except for the spouse thing. im a 4th year undergrad who has deeply researched this topic (ie talk to anybody around the medical school). you had to have worked a year in va before the app cycle began thus two years before school starts. it is truly impossible to get in-state if you are not from va. oh yeah and uva doesnt grant many deferrals. one must have an amazing excuse (rhodes, t for a, etc. and not research).

actually you have to have lived in VA for one year before school starts not before the cycle begins... big difference. at least that is what i was told and that is what i did and i am a resident now.

hey looks like i'm comin to uva in the fall... i'm probably gonna try and buy a townhouse or something near campus, so if anyone is interested in rooming let me kno.

Hi! I don't know if anyone even checks this anymore, but I erased that email about the hiking trip and was wondering if I'm supposed to do anything to sign up soon...

does anybody know?

Thanks,
T

hey tobiko.. gimme your email and i'll send it to you

there's a hiking trip for incoming students that the class of 2007 is organizing. i think like 20 or 30 people from the incoming class go on it every year before orientation

any incoming students still looking for a place to live? i just signed a lease on a 2 bedroom apt that is literally a couple of hundred yards from the med school. let me kno if ure interested.

Hey if anyone's in the Charlottesville area I'd love to get together for coffee or drinks or something...Moving to a place without knowing anybody's hard!

ok so someone explain to me this whole wahoowa thing

a couple questions...

1. does anyone think we'll have time for fantasy football during the school year?

if so,

2. is there enough interest to get a M1 league going?

i'm a work-first, play-later kinda guy, so i'm kind of hesitant about the time factor. any m2's want to weigh in?

i ran a league for a few years in high school and college...if anyone's interested, just respond or pm me, whatever.

Damn, all you guys will be leaving med school almost when I'm just starting there if I get in as an undergrad 👎

That is hilarious.
On another note, is anyone here going on the VMOO?
see you all soon.

i think tobiko was interesting in going on the vmoo thing. out of curiosity when are u all gonna be going down. i was thinking of having a lil party at my place the weekend before everything starts. anyone down?

I'll be down for good August 9 (monday). But, I'll be going on the VMOO thing which starts on Wednesday, and goes through saturday (I think).
Looking forward to getting down there.

VMOO? Why am I so out of the loop?

VMOO is the acronym for the Virginia Medical Outdoor Orientation (if memory serves). You should have received something about it in the mail or e-mail.

On another note, has anybody done those online workshops about precautions, confidentiality, etc.? How long do they take?

Benjo,
I've done two of the four. They are basically 40-80 pg powerpoint slides with a short multiple choice quiz at the end. Both were very dull, and one was missing slides. I think they took about 20-30 minutes each.

any hot girls at uva?

any stupid questions on SDN?
