UVA interviewees

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
rejected 🙁

thanks uva for drawing the pain out for a zillion months.

waitlisted today 🙁 (interview 2/6, dated 2/8)

:luck: to the rest of you though, it's a really great place.

I was accepted to UVA and I'm a VA resident. I'm really not 100% sure if I liked the school. Anyone want to share their opinions on the pros/cons of UVA?

I would inundate them with status updates forever. Keep your head up!

Just wanted to congrats everyone who was accepted to UVA! and to those on the waitlist, keep your head up! If you have your heart set on this place, I would go as far as perhaps setting up a meeting with Dean Canterbury in late May or Early June to express your continued interest. If you have any general questions I can try and answer them for you. I am one of the 4th year students here and also sit on the admissions committee (one of 8 student voting members.)

Good luck to you all =)

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that! :/

They got back to you within two days?! They were saying it might take two to three weeks at this time of year! :O

Drkewl,
How far in advance would you recommend calling to set up an appointment with Dean Canterbury?
Thanks!

I'm OOS and was accepted too. The most common con I have heard talked about is the 3rd year rotations away from Cville. It sounds like it could be personally difficult, or at least awkward to feel uprooted like that, but from a preparation standpoint, I think it could be great training for residency and beyond. The only other con I could think of would be if you are used to a big city and can't make the transition to a smaller town. Though if you have to be in any small town, there aren't many better.

I've thought a lot about this as well, here's my 2 cents: (I'll have VA residency too since my family lives there)

Pros:
Good research opportunities
Dual degree opportunities (MPH, MBA is top notch)
In-state tuition
Prestige - esp. in the South
New clinical curriculum - rotations are shorter during 3rd year - allows you to take more rotations before applying for residency (you make up the lost weeks later on) --- this is something I think is innovative and underrated
Charlottesville - weather, campus life (w/ undergrad institution)

Cons:
Charlottesville - small town
Rotations - somewhat rural for the most part (my understanding at least)
Apparent elitist reputation at the school (although I didn't see that when I interviewed)

Any input?

I would contact him in late May. Until then, with so many students holding multiple acceptance letters, we have no clue how much movement will occur on the wait list. Once we know for sure how many people actually WANT to go to UVA, only then the waitlist members get a second look. This is not done by the comittee as a whole, but by Dr. Canterbury and Dr. Thomas. If I were on the waitlist and really wanted to go to UVA, I think that time would be a very 'convenient' time to remind them about how much you would like to attend UVA (at that point, its more subjective impressions of the applicant than mcat scores =) I think this is especially true if you are instate! It just might push your application above some other similarly qualified candidates.

Best of luck to you!

I remember when I accepted my offer to UVA 4 years ago, I had the exact same conern... I think a lot of people did. I mean, who wants to be uprooted away from friends and go an hour or two away from home?

Now as a 4th year, in retrospect, those 3rd year away rotations were INCREDIBLE experiences! I will choose one prime example: Surgery. You work hard if you have the rotation at UVA, or at the Veterans hospital down in Salem VA. The teaching is about the same as you will be working with UVA residents down there. The big difference is what allow you to do down there! I know classmates that did entire surgeries under the direction of an attending (I kid you not) and I was highly involved in patient management and in the operating room. At UVA, I was in the OR with an attending and 1-3 residents - pretty standard for most teaching hospitals. If I was lucky, I got to retract and help suture at the end of the procedure.

Outside of the actual medical experience, you are down there with 4 or 5 classmates. We often went out together with the residents at least 2-3 times a week and had a blast! It was one of my best months of medical school.

I think the biggest vote of confidence in many of our away rotations is how the second year students fight for these away rotations because they hear how great they are! Now, of course, not every away rotation is this fun, but as a whole, it was a good thing to see how medicine was practiced in different environments.

to reply to a post above...

In-state tuition - still not cheap though =(

Prestige - esp. in the South - you do well at UVA, you can go ANYWHERE for residency.

*** We are a TRUE pass/fail insitutation. Dont be fooled by other places who say they are p/f but then go on to issue 'honors, high pass, pass, low pass, fail' designations.. i mean come on, is that not A, B, C, D, F? As a result, the competition here is very low (with the amount of hardcore people in med school, no way you can do away with it completely, but we are in a very good place right now)

Charlottesville - weather, campus life (w/ undergrad institution) -agree

Cons:
Charlottesville - small town - agree

Rotations - somewhat rural for the most part (my understanding at least) - if you want to be an inner city trauma surgeon, you may want to go somewhere else =) Almost any other specialty, it honestly doesn't matter. White, black, brown, purple, everyone has similar issues and you will learn how to treat them appropriately at UVA, a big city, or in Alaska. I honestly think the only reason to consider location for medical school is if you want to live in that type of area. I wouldn't consider 'patient population served' to be important in med school. Residency is a whole other ball game.

Apparent elitist reputation at the school (although I didn't see that when I interviewed) - unfortunately this is true - we have that reputation. As to why that is, I honestly have no clue. We actually DISCUSSED this issue at the beginning of the interview season. I can assure you, we don't carry ourselves like we're better or smarter than other med students. We feel fortunate to have an opportunity to learn from incredible physicians and faculty and attend a school that will let us pursue our dreams.

drkewl (or anyone else who knows),
Should additional materials for your file be addressed to the office of admissions in general, Dean Canterbury, or someone else I don't know about?
Thanks! You are very helpful and encouraging. 🙂

You can address it to Dean Canterbury =)

If anyone has 'personal' questions that they don't feel comfortable posting here, feel free to PM me.... I have already answered numerous questions and would be happy to give you my honest opinion on just about anything UVA

is UVA completely done with interviews for 2008? i have not received one word from them one way or the other - was complete in early October.

same here... and it doesn't give me much incentive to withdraw, though I am leaving the country soon. reject me already.

they said their interview slots were all full, but some people remain under consideration in case people withdraw before their interviews. hopefully, people with 6 acceptances and 5 pending decisions will consider withdrawing (and not just from uva), but it doesn't seem likely.

this post is pretty reflective of where we are currently at.

What is the likelyhood of some one who is one hold getting an interview at this point?

48 interviews left over the next 2 weeks.... I have no idea how many, or if any of those will cancel at this point

I don't know how this happened, but I just got accepted to UVa!

(The process is over!)

Congratulations! Last Friday was a long session, many good candidates, many close votes. I am happy for you! Now you can really enjoy whats left of your final semester in college!

Best of luck in the future.

I called and the lady told me a decision has been made and sent to my home address. I am expecting a rejection 🙁

I don't think we rejected anyone outright last week... so its either a waitlist or an acceptance 🙂

i am pre-interview though so thats why i am assuming its a rejection
