First off, newb alert so forgive me if this topic has already been addressed a bunch. I tried searching for it but couldn't really find anything useful. Anyway, I was wondering what people had heard/knew about UVa's post bac program. I now its pretty new so not too many folks had gone through it. I wouldn't imagine UVa would make something crappy though. Thanks in advance

I applied and was accepted to the U.Va program last year, but attended another program. Take what I say with a grain of salt, since things may have changed in the year since I applied.

The program is run through U.Va's continuing education school and students take classes with regular undergrads. In the case of general chemistry, for example, that means taking the course with about 400 other people. The anonymity and lack of personal attention by professors didn't appeal to me, and I also felt like the person running the program (I forget his name) didn't know as much about the whole med school applications process as I would have liked. Though I didn't visit for an interview, classmates of mine at the program I ended up attending (a more well-established and smaller formal postbac) mentioned that it seemed like they were still hashing out a lot of the details beyond the basics (i.e. taking the necessary prereq. classes and prepping for the MCAT).

Perhaps someone who attended the program for 2006-07 can comment? I'd be curious to know how it went for you.

If you've never been to Charlottesville, I should mention, it is awesome -- that's a huge positive for the U.Va postbac program.

Yeah, I just got the acceptance letter from them in the mail yesterday. They didn't even ask me for an interview which I thought was strange...anyway, I've only ever seen/heard great things about UVA (undergrad and grad programs) so I figured they probably couldn't screw it up too bad. It is only in its second year right now so I'm sure they've had/they'll have some hiccups. Buuuuut there is a Top 25 med school right there so that is a plus....and you're right Charolettesville is lovely. Has anyone else heard anything else? Rumors and inuendo are perfectly acceptable.

I should also mention that -- should you decide to attend the U.Va program -- if you play your cards right, you can get in-state residency very easily. U.Va Med only requires a year of documented residency for in-state consideration. You will need to do the following immediately upon moving to Virginia:

  • Register your car in VA
  • Register to vote in VA
  • Get a Virginia driver's license
  • File a Virginia tax return

That's it.
