UVa vs. UC Davis. I NEED ADVICE!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i think he's talking about so cali, specifically, the wealthy areas like brentwood, westwood, bel-air, hollywood...

It's really true even for the less wealthy areas, like the San Fernando Valley, Inland Empire, poorer parts of the South Bay...

females in nor cal like san fran and berkeley are not that generally superficial because they like to let go and grow armpit hair

I'll give you Berkeley, but not San Francisco. San Francisco is the same thing as LA, just disguised in "indie" wear and lifestyles.

* San Francisco is the best city in the state though, in spite of the new generation of "indie"-*****s.

I don't know anything about UC Davis but I just wanted to clarify my support for UVA.

I live in Richmond, VA and I go to VCU. UVA has an amazing reputation in this part of the US. Its pretty much the big shot research med school between Duke and Hopkins geographically. I have a lot of good friends at UVA undergrad and med school and they all have nothing but great things to say about it.

Being Thomas Jefferson's University, the place has a ton of history and just walking around, you feel like you're a part of something bigger. The air is fresh, the scenery (I'm talking about more than just the grounds and the surrounding mountains ) is beautiful, and the lifestyle is relaxed. Everyone is ridiculously nice too. Its the South so you can live well without stepping on other people. 😀

I think albemarle county has one of the highest concentration of people with graduate degrees anywhere and C-vill has been consistently rated as one of the best cities to live in. Nearby goochland county has recently been ranked the county with the highest average household income in the US too... at $137,045, so even if there are rednecks, they are well educated and very wealthy. 👍

Just from looking at my MDapps, I withdrew from more than half of the schools I applied to as soon as I found out I got into UVA. I had a heck of a hard time choosing between UVA and Northwestern too. I actually liked UVA the school more than NW but I decided that since I've lived in central Virginia since I started high school, it was time to see something new. I'm awfully biased but I hope it helps you make your decision!

OP here,

thanks so much for the insight everyone. Being a Cali resident, I am torn between staying close to family and seeing another part of the country (went to davis as an undergrad)

like i said in my initial post, money comes out almost equal and from talking to residents and a few of my PIs, both schools are good options, and neither is much above the other. It seems matching at any desired residency will ultimately come down to me, my usmle scores and my 3rd/4th yr report card as neither school has that name recognition a top 5 school does to boost my profile.

thanks again for the the advice

I'm very familiar with the UC Davis and Sacramento region. You don't want to go to medical school there. It's no fun, there's always nothing to do. Davis is a cow town.

People always say theres nothing to do in Davis. I see two problems. First, are we gonna have the time to go clubbing while in med school, so that what you mean by "nothing to do"? Second, if your medical school was UCLA, would you be able to hang out a lot?

Ahh I remember The Grad, freshman year, tearin it up on the dance floor... doing things with girls in the club that in retrospect could have gotten both of us arrested... man... those were the days.
