Hey Everybody,

Think I may have found an error in UW, but wanted to double-check:

Teriparatide is the only medication that may cause bone growth, correct? My understanding is that SERMs, bisphosphonates, etc. decrease bone loss, but only teriparatide induces new growth.

Is this accurate or am I mistaken?

Thanks!

Depends on how you look at it. Bisphosphonates and SERMs are anti resorptive therapy, in that they function primarily by inhibiting osteoclasts. This leaves osteoblasts unhindered, so the balance shifts in favor of the latter. The end result should be an increase in bone density. Teriparatide essentially increases osteoblastic activity, which will also shift the balance in favor of increased bone density, but it isn't anti resorptive therapy for obvious reasons.
