What type of envelope did your acceptance or denial letter arrive in?

Acceptance was small envelope, single page. Pre-interview rejection was the same. Not sure about post-interview rejection; I never saw one of those.

I got a post-interview hold letter that said my application was highly rated and I would hear more by the end of January. I haven't heard anything more yet! Has anyone gotten this letter and/or heard back after this hold?

I interviewed in Dec and haven't heard back yet...

Any comments or advice?

Post-interview rejection letter comes in a small, white envelope as well.

I wouldn't worry--I interviewed 11/3 and still haven't heard yes or no! I heard in mid-December about my hold. You could always call to see when you are going to committee.

oh dear, is this hold pretty common for instaters? i interview there in a couple of weeks.

i dont know how common it is. i think people have gotten on the waitlist as well so i think the hold is better than the wait list? no clue....my fingers are crossed

anyone else got the post-interview hold letter?

i did...

and i just got placed on the top 25% of the alternate list.

hopefully you'll hear better news!

i'm going nuts--no mail for me today. i suspect my mailwoman....but i should've gotten something today!

Just got the waitlist letter--top 25 % of the waitlist. Does anyone know the size of Madison's waitlist or how many they accept off it (based on previous years)?

Then, I think I'll get waitlisted as well...
Since I'm an OOS, my chances are less 😳

In response to your question "Cheesegirl".... the waitlist moves in some year, and it doesn't move at all in some year...

It really depends on the year, but the adcom learned their lesson for the class of 2009. They ended up with too many students matriculating (normally they target 150, I think it ended up being like ~160ish), so NOBODY came off the waitlist that year. For the class of 2010, they were a bit more conservative with their offers, I think they ended up offering acceptances to people who were ranked ~10-20th on the waitlist (those who were still on the list at May 15th). I can't remember exactly the number of waitlisters that matriculated, but I would expect the same thing this year. Its probably too early to tell at this point, as people will continue to be accepted into late March, and of course, people will go to other schools and drop their acceptances.

I was actually ON that class of 2009 waitlist! 👎 I was waitlisted #31 (i think), and I even received a letter saying that I was waitlisted #31 and that I was "in the group of applicants who have a high probability of getting off the waitlist." Receiving that letter made me believe that I was going to get off the waitlist, and it never happened. Really sucked!! The only movement was from people who dropped off the waitlist. And now, 2 years later, I got accepted to Wisconsin 3 weeks after I was interviewed! Took me 2 years to get into this school, but it was worth it! Good luck to everyone!!

Congrats! Look at this way, it may be better to be apart of the 2011 class, especially with the scheduled opening of the children's hospital this summer, and hopefully the new research complex in 2008. Just looking at the children's hospital every morning is amazing, it seems like it would take another year to finish, the facade is far from done, and I'd imagine the interior is still concrete and utilities. Yet, apparently they are still on schedule (at least what I've read). The poor 2009ers will probably miss out on most of the new buildings. And best of all? Not having to commute over to the old med school for anatomy dissections. Trust me, that's a major improvement.

man, it seems like madison is pretty liberal with the interviews and then conservative dishing out post-interview acceptances. i've heard of a lot of instaters (friends from highschool and also people on sdn) that have simply gotten waitlisted. what's the secret to an outright acceptance? really high stats? research? anyone have any insight on this?

i'm losing hope that i might just be waitlisted after my interview, too.

I think they accept people that have the really good numbers and all around picture first--and want to make sure they get all those people before handing out acceptances to the next tier of applicants.

What part of the waitlist are your friends on? I'm just wondering if they have sent out letters saying you are on X part of the waitlist, besides the top 25 % one I got.

i don't know specifics about their waitlist letters, but i'll check and get back to you on it.

also, just out of curiosity - i know madison's interviews are open file, but i think i read in the interview feedback section somewhere that they only see your extracurriculars/essays listed on your secondary? they don't see your amcas/grades/scores?

It's partially blinded. So, they know all ur essays, ECs, secondary except MCAT and Grades

Its really all about the candidate, there isn't a magical mark on one's application that is required for admission at UW, and really, at most med schools. There is no emphasis on research, I know of many in my class who never served a day in a lab. There are some small things they really like, that I know of. 1)Community Service/Volunteer work. I got the sense that this was stressed a bit more at UW than other places in who they evaluate. 2)Types of classes taken- There is one series of classes at UW-Madison that the adcom really likes to see from a UW grad.

Really, the interview is nothing but an extra LOR, and unless you insult/abuse your interviewer, they'll fight for you in the adcom meetings. The med student interview has barely any impact on one's application. So Madison is like any other school in terms of what matters: 1)MCAT/GPA 2)LOR 3)Medical Experience 4)EC's/Research... just that being a Wisconsin resident really helps.

I'd imagine they wouldn't rank you until April/May, when they have a better idea of who appears to be matriculating and who turned down offers of acceptance.

I know they definitely don't have access to your transcripts... so they won't know when they interview you, your GPA or the classes you took. I don't know about MCAT scores, or AMCAS related stuff. The interview is usually straightforward, usually no ethics stuff, just the typical Why medicine? Why UW? What about medical experience? Research? ... so on and so on.

hey i just spoke to one of my friends who got a waitlist letter saying she was on the bottom half of the waitlist, she interviewed in september and had a 3.97 and a 33.

I just got the acceptance letter yesterday... It's really strange, for sure, they review case by case.

Congrats!! I hope that I get in off the waitlist... 🙂

Thanks! I wish everyone the best. If i get in CA schools, I'll withdraw early.

Does anyone have the waitlist states for UW-Madison or know where I can find them? (How many people on the waitlist in the past years/how many people accepted off the waitlsit?)

VERY few people get off the waitlist, if any.
