Could you explain the discrepancy in UW! Once it says "P24 antigen and HIV antibody" assay is recommended for HIV screening! Then in another question it says P24 antigen is not recommended in screening purposes!

There are multiple proteins on retrovirus HIV to take them into diagnosis. Antibodies to P24, P7, P9 antigens are the most important ones utilized for screening (i.e ELISA). 3 cases can happen in ELISA:

-If 3/3 are +, then confirmatory test is due based on western blot.

-If 2 out of 3 are positive, then it's indeterminate and test can be done again.

-If 1/3 +, the test assumed negative.

The fourth generation EIA tests combine both HIV antibody and p24 antigen detection, which reduces the “window” period for detection following infection to little more than 10 days, and reliably less than 3 weeks. These sensitive 4th generation assays can detect HIV-1 and HIV-2 with both IgG and IgM antibodies and p24 antigen.
