ok is it just me or are Biochem qs in UWorld hella hard?

I feel like ALL the learning I have done, and mind you iv read Kaplan Biochem like 20 times, and I still cant answer the questions in UWorld.

I somtimes miss the easisest questions where I know i know the pathway but the question is osmething SO stupid makes me wanna pull my hair out!

anyone face this? what is the best way to over come this?? I am going CRAZY! 😕

i seriously think i should start a thread where ppl can just go on crying out about uworld biochem questions! aarrgghh!

I did the first 10 questions and thought it to be med - easy. What review sources did you use? I used Lippincott's during class, then annotated from that into FA and did all the GT biochem cards and feel good about that subject.

i used Lipincotts during class and Kaplan Biochem right now. I actually am very comfortable with Kaplan biochem and feel more or else prety comfortable with the subject but its the way the questions are asked I feel makes it hard.

I feel like a lot of the patho/pathophys questions are easier to figure than the Biochem questions in UWorld.

Thats why at this point iv given up trying to memorize the FA section of biochem or even re-reading kaplan biochem, I think I am going to do questions and learn biochem the way UWorld wants me to learn it. Ill see if that makes a difference. My exam is Nov end so I guess i have a little bit of time.

And just to give an example of what I mean.

I had a question today on DNA replication very basic question, or so you would think. Question was about lagging strands. It said "these (leading and lagging) strands are built both in 5 to 3 and 3 to 5 direction. Which of the following is unique to the DNA construction in 3 to 5?

I thought they were talking about synthesis which of course you would think, at least I did. But then it mentioned 3 to 5 which didnt make any sense. But the whole freaking questions wasnt about "synthesis" it was about "construction" becuase apparantely the okazaki fragments are constructed in the 3 to 5 direction using fragments "synthesized" in 5 to 3.

that really ticked me off, maybe iv just been studying for too long and this question was actually way easy! who knows either way it was super annoying!

Isn't this test awesome. See, one day you could be practicing medicine in a rural area and need to know that information to save someones life without access to an otoscope or any band-aids.

seriously after reading the explanation to this question I really feel like there should be an official way to "report" ridunkulous questions.

I seriously wouldnt care if the whole exam was patho pathophys pharm phys and even micro/immuno. and I guess I wouldnt mind biochem either if I didnt have to waste my time/energy trying to figure out what THEY meant by "construction", i mean seriously is it even worth giving a question like that? How does it make me a better doctor even better at biochem!

as if we students dont have enough to cram in and cram out! needless to say today UWorld biochem has frustrated me beyond belief!

Those bizarro uwould questions are actually kinda useful, because the real thing has occasional random questions w/ really poor wording too. It's good to have had some practice picking out the most likely of a bunch of bad answers.

Honestly, though, uwould biochem is waaayyy more intense than it is on the real exam, where it is more focused on molecular bio and gene mutations than metabolism.
