Third that. Apparently there was a meeting yesterday for WA residents, then the next one will be 2/14, then after that the final week of EXCOM meetings in mid March.
I would love to hear from UW earlier than late March, but that is probably going to be all of our fates.

Totally sucks... I'm in state WA but I was out of state for college. I had good MCAT and GPA, but very little clinical experience outside of research + volunteer work. Worst of all, I'm not the least interested in primary care.
Do you know how many people got accepted already? From the past threads, I can't imagine too many.
How were your interviews? I thought mine went decently, but those guys really try to catch you off guard. We didn't talk about primary care stuff at all and went straight into research.

I stopped by the office on Tuesday to drop something off and asked about that. I was told that, at this point, people who were on rolling-admissions hold status would not be looked at again until the end of the season in late March. So barring miracles, I think you're right, RisingSun. I too would love to hear from them sooner, because flying around the country for interviews is draining my bank account to dangerously low levels. And so far it hasn't resulted in any acceptances either.

My interview went pretty well, though I certainly didn't feel that I had nailed it. That sure turned out to be true. I have no idea how many peope have been accepted thus far. People don't talk much about UW on SDN, and I haven't done any research into it. My understanding is that a fair but not extraordinary number of people are rejected right after their interview, and a very small number indeed are accepted right after their interview, but that most people end up on hold. Of those on hold, a few will be accepted in the intervening months between their initial results and the end of the season, but most of them have to wait until March to hear. I wish I could attach real numbers to all of those 'mosts' and 'manys' and 'fews' that I've just put forth, but I can't, so I just don't think about it much.
Is UW your first choice? It definitely is mine.
mine too... I was thinking of writing a letter of intent, but I have no idea how it would go. During the interview they kept on digging as to what other schools I am interested in. I told them, UWSOM was my top choice, but I don't know if they believed me.
My interview actually went really badly. Too many ethical questions, the first one caught me off guard and I don't think I ever really recovered. I was sure that I was going to be flat out rejected, so I was surprised to be put in the "pool."
It's my first choice for location and tuition, but I have to be honest, after seeing some other med schools across the country, I am really disappointed with what UW has to offer, considering all the hype about the school. How did you guys feel about the school and how it compares to other schools?
Same experience. They seemed very skeptical that I would go to UW if I had other options. Every other school where I have interviewed has been skeptical that I would go anywhere *other* than UW, however. Everyone seems to think that I'm using them as a back-up school. 😡 You'd think that your state school, when it is also such a good school, wouldn't have so much trouble accepting that you really want to go there.

The facilities and the curriculum. The other schools that I have interviewed at have blown the lid off what UW has to offer curriculum as well as facility wise. It was interesting to me that the student tour guide had very little good to say about UW, and not a single student stopped to talk to us during the tour. Total night and day from my experience interviewing at other schools.
Where have you had your best overall interview experience? Mine was at University of Rochester, which is my #2 school now.
I think that UW really shines in the third and fourth years rather than in the first two years, where they are merely average (though certainly solid). As far as the facilities, I don't really care about going to class in an ugly building. There is so much high-calibre research that goes on there, that you will certainly find no shortage of opportunity if that's what you want. The hospital gives very good care and has very good faculty, and the affiliated clinical facilities are numerous, diverse and wonderful. The rest of the UW campus (or most of it) is beautiful, the IMA is the best facility of its sort that I have seen, and Seattle is a great place to live. Once it comes time for your rotations, I think it would be tough to find a better array of high-quality choices in the country. The more I have looked into it the more certain I have become that UW is my first choice for more than just financial reasons. Do you have another school that is your first choice? Have you been to Rochester?
I haven't seen that thread. Did the posting there suggest that most people didn't find out their fate until late March?

here ya go... almost none of them found out until the very end, and walla, a good number of them got in or got on the wait list... Hope we're as lucky 😉

I was really hoping that I would interview at Rochester, but it was my very first rejection, right after my MCAT scores, so I guess they are looking for something that I don't have (probably research experience, which is kind of ironic because I am hoping to be really involved in research at whatever med school I end up at). As far at the school goes, I think that IU has the best program of any school that I have seen so far, but its huge OOS price tag is prohibative. UK and UL both had really good facilities with happy students.
I'm hoping to interview at OHSU and Baylor, but no word from either of them yet. Where else have you interviewed/would like to interview?
I'm in the same pool of pain. I interviewed late october and have been waiting ever since I got the dreaded, "your good enough to not be rejected but not quite special enough to be accepted yet" email. They also fished in my interview to see what oter schools I applied to and didn't seem to believe me when I told them they were my first choice. I think they also ask what other schools you have applied to to see what kind of an applicant you are (remember only one of the interviewers has your scores). It is there way of finding out how competative you are without knowing your scores. Good luck everyone, lets hope for good news come march.

I interviewed this past Friday in the afternoon. I know an excom meeting was Friday as well. Does anyone have an idea whether the excom meeting on Friday discusses everyone who interviewed that day (including the evening interviewees)? I'm curious because if so, I could hear sometime next week.

The EXCOM meeting is usually scheduled at 3 pm in the afternoon. I don't know if they had a chance to go over your application last Friday. If they did, they will either send you an email telling you to wait or mail your acceptance/rejection letters on Monday.

I just interviewed at Rochester and I was very surprised at what a cool school it is! For me UWSOM is my first choice because of cost and clinical opportunities, but my hesitation is the number of hours that are spent in class the first two years... I've checked out the AMSA surveys for all of the schools i've interviewed at and it looks UW has ~38/week, while all the other schools range from 18-24... thats a pretty significant difference. (plus, since I would be in Pullman where there are only 40 students, people would notice if you missed lecture). but I'm 99% sure i'd go there if I got accepted.
Don't quote me on this, but I heard the interview is 50%. Getting the interview means they know you're academically qualified for the program (based on MCAT/GPA ~50%).
Old guys sit in a room rolling dice... If your excom member rolls two consecutive even numbers and manages to pin the tail on the donkey then youre in.
From the slides at the last on-campus admissions pow-wow, interview is 50%, GPA is 25%, MCAT is 25%. I wasn't able to get clarification on whether the GPA being weighted is the 1+2+3 GPA or an overall GPA. (1+2+3 means UW's weighting of freshman*1 + sophomore*2 + junior*3)
How about ECs/LORs? Is that part of the interview score?

born in PR China. Moved to the states when I was 8; lived in CA, NY, and OH; I feel bad to say it, but I hit the instate jackpot for UW when my folks moved to WA 3 years ago. I'm currently in tacoma after graduating in late August. I thought I'd do some clinical work before applying to medical schools; I got to do some traveling too... Anyone else wana share?
Ah, yes...waiting, waiting, waiting. I am also in the "competitive pool", and its killing me not knowing where I stand. UW is definitely my top choice as a Washington resident. I'm originally an eastern/central WA small-town girl, but have been in Seattle the last few years for school.

wait is there an interview numeric score? I really have no idea how they decide who's in and who isn't... damn it, on the one hand I like the fact that they interview everyone. On the other, its like why interview us all, when you know a majority is going to be disappointed.
if you look at the MSAR you have a very good chance of getting an interview if you apply. A friend of mine at Central got at interview with an MCAT of 24! You have to have really messed up to be from Washington and not get an interview. This translates to a lot of depressed pre-meds come March. Also your letters and Personal Statement are definitely taken into account. I was told how strong my letters of rec. were and how they were genuinely impressed with my personal statement. I believe they can push you over the edge especially with a great interview.
P.S. lived in Olympia for 8 years before coming to CWU. Of all the state schools in Washington we a perhaps the most overlooked but have the best science facility as I was told by my UW interviewer.

Nope, I can't say that I do. It sure would make the waiting a little more bearable, though.

I hear you there. I have been told a number of times that my letters are very strong, and I felt very good about my AMCAS statement, but here I sit waiting for March to come around to find out my fate. I have to admit that my UW-specific essay was way too long and dry. I don't think that I interview especially well either. Ah well, no sense second guessing ourselves at this point, eh gents?
I talked with a lady in the admissions office, and while she said that this happens sometimes, most of the time WA residents have to wait until late March to hear their fate. She highly recommended update letters, though.
Does the office of admissions send an update email to everyone in the competitive pool after each EXCOM meeting saying if you're accepted, still in the pool, or rejected? Or is it only one update email and you won't hear back until after the last meeting in late march?
Once you've been notified that you're in the competitive pool you won't hear from them again unless your status changes, which *could* happen before the final EXCOM meeting, but most likely will not.

That is to say that once you're in the competitive group awaiting final decision, there is a small chance that you will be accepted before the end of the interview season but no chance that you will be rejected before that. People who aren't close to the top of the competitive group do not get looked at a second time before the end of March. Once the season is over everyone's file is revisited and people are accepted, rejected, put on the ranked waitlist or on the unranked waitlist. The ranked waitlist is numbered 1-25, and in recent years everyone on it has been accepted, along with a few people from the unranked list. Thus if you find yourself on the ranked list at the beginning of April, it's almost a guarantee that you will eventually be accepted; if you find yourself on the unranked list, it is still possible, but far from guaranteed.

That is just what we're calling the 'hold status' that most candidates are put in who are not rejected outright after their interview. Right after the interview some are rejected, a few are accepted, and the majority receive an e-mail telling them to wait for an answer until more applicants have been interviewed, usually until the end of the interview season.
Xcom meetings are on Fridays. I was told to look up my status the following Monday, and if it says something like "A decision has been rendered" then I could call up the office and ask about the result. The next meeting where WA residents will (might) be reviewed is on Feb. 14. I'll be checking my status the following Monday.
That's a little odd, Docbest, but not unheard of. One thing that can happen is your interviewer/adcom advocate may not be available to go to the meetings immediately following your interview. When that happens, your file is not discussed until he or she returns. Since yours was in December, maybe (s)he had a long vacation planned. 😕
check your application status on the uw secondary site to see whether any action's been taken.
in general, they'll send an email for either acceptance/waitlist/pool;
a letter for acceptance/rejection. no email is sent for a rejection.
