Thanks, Grob. That's exactly how I'm trying to look at it--as a step closer rather than a setback. It's tempting to think, "Geez, other people get in without having to interview twice. What's wrong with me?" But I suspect that I was closer to in than out, or they would simply have kicked me to the curb without bothering, so maybe it's reasonable to think that the prize is mine to lose. This may all be wishful thinking on my part, but it helps to put my mind at ease.
 
Wow, this is very interesting. I have never heard of this before. Good luck, we'll all be cheering for ya (let us know how it goes).
 
argh... tomorrow is the last excom meeting till march madness. Is anyone getting any news?

bump. excom meeting has passed. now, i think we talked about this already, but do they really review earlier interviewees first before moving on to others in these meetings? i hope everyone's doing well while waiting...
and if they decided something on a file today, when do you think we'd hear about it?

Mine's on 3/22...didn't even know they interviewed that late. I'm trying to convince myself that I'm not just interviewing for a wl spot, plus I'm OOS. We'll see what happens.

I am impressed...congrats. I was looking at the calendar for your day and it said it was MSTP day but the day I am interviewing shows that there are no interviews that day. Go figure...crazy UW. So where are you from/where did you go to school?

I was born and raised in so. cal and went to UW for undergrad because I was recruited for the track team. I became a Washington resident and now I am in North Carolina for a masters program. What part of CA are you from?
 
Is there any hope for someone who hasn't been given an interview yet?

I'm not applying until next year but I have a friend who hasn't heard back yet. 🙁

I guess it depends when your friend applied. I submitted my secondary on the last day. I got an interview invite about 2-3 weeks later.
 
Well welcome to the uwsom applicant pool. Most of us haven't had much response since our interviews, so we've been marking the days off our calendars. :scared::scared::scared:

Grrr, the more I think about it, the more I feel I would of been happier if I interviewed in march and have skipped this annoying wait. Anyway, prepare well for your interviews, and hopefully things will turn out alright. Good Luck.

i agree, the change between WA and NC is huge. I went from bellevue, a tiny but still chic city to Durham NC which is boring as hell. I'm glad im going back to WA

Yeah bellevue is pretty much the bomb. One of the safest and wealthiest areas in the entire US. Plus there public schools are always in the top ten in the nation (I think a couple of years ago two of their high schools were rated in the top five in the nation). Even still its the rural region around leavenworth that I want to practice medicine in.

Leavenworth would be awesome... is that area very underserved?

yeah, Bellevue High School was ranked #1 public school the year I was a senior there. I wouldn't mind living in Bellevue and practicing in seattle

Well Leavenworth itself I think is doing ok, but is still considered underserved I believe. The whole Wenatchee area would be great to practice around though. I love how you still get all the green forests of the west side (without the rain) and you have all the great shopping of a larger town with the small town feeling. Its hard to beat.

P.S. I see that you were accepted to DMU Jillibean. I was too and loved the school but am really hoping UW comes through for me.
 
Hey VaulterGirl and Kevster2001, what do you think of Chapel Hill? I've just received the good news from UNC-CH, and I'm all but certain that I'll go there if UW doesn't end up accepting me.

Much better than Durham. Demographics aside, the atmosphere is actuallly similar to U-district. Theres plenty of bars, cheap food etc etc. Just expect less Asian stuff. Btw the weather in NC blows during the summer.
There culture here is completely different in my opinion. Get use to things moving a lot slower. I tend to try to do things as fast as possible, which was good in Seattle where everyone was strung out on coffee and efficient but in the south, people move like molasses. Waiting in line at Subway is kind of painful.
 
Hi all, my first post. Anyway, I was invited to interview on 3/21. I am definitely OOS (TX resident, school in NYC) so I have never been to the west coast. I'm thinking of giving up my interview spot to one of you who's probably more deserving than me. After going back and forth 3 times from NY to TX for interviews, I don't know how much more my budget would allow.

Plus, isn't March 21st a little late? A lot of the schools I'm waiting on will probably have rejection/acceptance letters mailed out before then. I don't know. Would I be interviewing for just a waitlist spot as someone else suggested? Tomorrow, I'm going to talk to a student who called me a few weeks ago from the OMA office there. They said they needed more minorities. 🙂

Any thoughts?
 
well folks, after reviewing the interview calender, for those of us who have not heard anything yet it appears the next word will come in the period March 15-31st (for WA residents). Hang tight!

Well if University of Washington is one of your top choices then I don't see why you shouldn't give it a shot. UW doesn't fill out most of its spots or even interview most of its OOS until late march , so you're just in time. That being said, if you don't have any interest in the school at all then you probably should let someone else get a chance and save yourself the airfare.

I agree with Grobular on this. They make most of their decisions late in the game, and there is no period of interviews that are only for the waitlist. As an OOS student in particular, if they've invited you it means that there is something specific about you that interests them. Your chances are good. If you're interested, you would definitely not be wasting your time flying out here.

I haven't had it yet. The only open spot they had was towards the end of the season, in March. I'll definitely let you know how I feel about it that afternoon.

I'll start this post by saying that in no way is my anger directed at xcel. In fact, from comments in his post xcel shows nobility in feeling like maybe he shouldn't take the interview in favor of letting someone "who's probably more deserving" have it.

Alright, now I'll start. This is what pisses me off about UW. They say how they're so concerned for training doctors who will serve the residents of the WWAMI region, blah blah blah. But, in instances like this it's obvious that their main goal is really to serve the liberal/academic agenda of diversity.

I am astounded at the fact that they would call and recruit an applicant because "they [need] more minorities." Why do they need more minorities??? Becuase they're currently not projected to meet their ethnic quota for the year? If I were recruited on that basis I would find it patronizing, but that might just be me. Seriously, how is my medical education (which is what I'm paying them for) enriched by the fact that I sit next to or study with someone of a different race? Sure universities like to spout their line about how diversity makes everyone's education better, but I'd like to know how.

But the URM part of this is only half of the issue, but realize that it is THE reason they specifically called this individual, as evidenced by the recruitment phone call. The other half of the issue is the fact that xcel has never even been to the West Coast and, because of that fact I assume the following can be added on (correct me if I'm wrong xcel), any state in the WWAMI region. Yet they want to recruit him to be in the class of ~180 seats given to individuals who they profess will be physicians who serve the residents of the WWAMI region. Come on, what are the chances that someone who has never even set foot in the state will want to stay and practice there? Wouldn't it be more important to accept one of the thousands of applicants who grew up in the region and desperately want to remain there for their education and career? Nope, guess not, guess it's more important to have another URM in the class so the administrators can pat themselves on the back.

Again, xcel I sincerely hope you don't feel that any of this anger is directed towards you, it is solely at the administrators of UW.
 
I totally agree with you. We pay taxes to have physicians from Washington trained in Washington who will stay in Washington. If they cant fill a minority quota from qualified Washington residents then we have a much bigger problem in our state, which cannot be solved by taking medical school spots away from Washingtonians.

I understand your anger, Booner, and I take no offense. First of all, I'd like to just say that last week I emailed UWSOM and let them know I would not be able to interview there. I sincerely hope one of you who is waiting for this school is able to take my spot. I realized that since I was vacillating, it would be best not to interview. And there were many factors that contributed to this decision.

To address your points: No, I have not been further west than Texas. I have also admitted in my various application essays that I plan on returning to South Texas to serve the under-served population of Mexican-Americans there. I have no desire to stay in Washington or the surrounding states (although maybe that would've changed if I visited and liked it). So you are correct on that point, as well. The reason I applied to UWSOM in the first place was their focus on primary care (something that is truly lacking in my hometown), and I felt I would receive a wonderful education at this school.

Also, I don't want the admissions office at UWSOM to seem as though they are reaching to fill their "minority quota" from OOSers. The medical student that contacted me was part of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and to my knowledge, had no affiliation with the Office of Admissions. He was expressing his personal opinion to me that he would like to see more minorities in his class and he was glad I had applied. We could get into a whole discussion about URM's but there are other threads for that.

Hope this clears up some of your concerns, and good luck to you.
 
I assume that we find out our fate at the end of March...right? I remember my friends found out Mid March the last couple of years.
 
Xcel, thanks for your response and your honesty. I'm not sure that I see a big difference in whether the student is from the office of multicultural affairs or not, it's all wrapped up in the same admissions tactics.
VaulterGirl, if you're in the competitive pool you probably won't hear until the first of April. I believe the big final meeting takes place the last few days of March, so we'll all hear sometime the week after that.
 
I think it might be time for me to write a letter of interest to the admissions committee at uwsom, cept I have no idea how to go about doing it. Has anyone here written one yet?

no, not yet. the committee has encouraged us to write an update letter, but there's nothing as of now I haven't already told them in my interview. welcome everyone to march madness, when each day crawls like molasses. BUMP.
 
has anyone that was previously under consideration has been accepted and already decided on going? WWAMI or out of WWAMIE state people??
 
Did other people get the financial aid email yesterday? It seems odd that they would send it out a week after the deadline.... or maybe my email is just delayed.

Yes, I got those emails. First of all, they tortured me because I am on the competitive list and not accepted yet, and they made me wish I already knew my fate. Secondly, yea...they ramble on and on about making SURE to meet the FAFSA deadling and whatnot. Um, the FAFSA deadline that was nearly two weeks ago! It seems they should have sent those emails out a tad bit earlier.

Yeah, but I am from Idaho and it seems like they have been a lot faster in deciding for us than the WA residents.

Yea, it seems they make decisions on the WWAMI candidates (other than WA) pretty quickly. Which is good for you! I'm WA, but definitely considering volunteering to be at Pullman-Moscow if I get accepted. I'm a small-town girl, and have been at UW for undergrad. I feel like a change of scenery would be a good thing! Where in ID are you from?

Bonners Ferry (so North Idaho)... where are you from in WA? To be honest with you I am not that excited to move to Pullman/Moscow just to move again in 10mo. I wish we all did the first 2 years together in Seattle and then went to the other states for clinicals. Plus it seems odd that I wont even meet the majority of the class until the start of second year... but oh well, I am sure it will be fun.

Yea, I hear you on the moving thing. Bonner's ferry, I've been through there a few times. I have alot of family in western MT and we have a cabin in Trout Creek, MT (near Thompson falls). I love that area, especially the Sandpoint-ish area. I'm from Ephrata, which is central WA. Most people aren't too familiar with it!
 
Should I be worried that I am still in the "under consideration pool" but DID NOT received these e-mails? I hope this isn't a bad sign...🙁

How many other people out there were surprised by this early deadline? Does this mean that none of us can receive financial aid from UW?
