I love it when ppl get off the waitlist

Congrats, Diagora and Pubhealth! Get on Facebook!

Hey everyone, we're at least up to #12 b/c I just got in! Thank you to everyone who've been posting and keeping us up-to-date. This is a great thread. 🙂

It's moving at least 2 ppl a day it seems. Good luck to all still waiting!

Anyone up for calling later this afternoon? I don't want to be in suspense all weekend but I called Tuesday so I don't really want to call again so soon.

just phoned in: 17 off the Washington Waitlist so far! go waitlist go!! 🙂 hopefully it'll pick up the closer it gets to the 15th...

Sultana, thanks for checking for us! To everyone deep-ish on the list: There was a segment on NPR today about college admissions, and they were saying how many med schools are going deeper into the waitlist this year than ever before... no specifics on UW, but still nice to hear!

Does anyone know how the waitlist works for those not from WWAMI states? When I was told I was on the waitlist I didn't realize there is more than one... I'm from WA... Thanks!

It's one waitlist for WA residents. Once you are accepted, you are chosen for a specific site based on preferences you specified in your secondary, and available spots.

Congrats!! Bluesy06!!

Congrats Camn!!
Thanks Dane... but I'm still wondering how the waitlist works for non-Wa residents/non-WWAMI residents.. just curious ??

Enrollment-wise, I believe that total number of OOSers is roughly equivalent to one of the non-Washington WWAMI states. So just think of it as ...

total OOS = Wyoming.

and just like Wyoming has it's own "separate" list, the OOS group has its own list... so you're competing for a small number of spots, but only against other OOSers (not against WWAMI).

Stella just informed me 20 off WA list as of today

Seriously, congrats. Always love hearing about waitlist movement!

just looking back through this thread, I realized that my last post was #666.....spooky!
😱

I'm in at #22 from the WA list... it's still moving a couple spots a day

Hi Ya'll.
Congrats to all who made it off the waitlist!! There has been no movement on the Alaska list as of Monday.

For the record and for those who will be talking to Dr. Teitz:
I had the post-interview meeting with her on Monday.
She addressed four areas:

Numbers
Experiences
Personal Statement
Interview

She didn't address letters of Rec and I forgot to ask about them.

She briefly talked through each area and gave advice on how to improve. For me, she talked mostly about how what you say in the interview should reflect the content of your app. "Walk the Talk." For me, she said I needed more shadowing and experience in rural primary care situations, since I said that I would like to be a rural primary care doc. In other words, although I've lived my whole life in a rural community and feel like I have a good understanding of rural life and I have shadowed docs while attending college in the city, they didn't put the two together - I need to have the exact experience in the area that I say I want to go into.

She also said to make sure to directly tie your personal qualities together with attributes of a good doc/ good medical care. I explicitly did this in my essay, but it was not explict enough I guess. I had very good reasons (I thought) for wanting to be a rural primary care doc, but in the end either they didn't believe me or they weren't strong enough because I didn't have direct first hand experience observing the doctor-patient interaction in a rural community.

My advice to those applying who may be lurking here: Make it very easy for them to understand who you are and why you want to do what you want to do. Give them a theme that ties your experiences and personal qualiteis together and don't stray from this into unknown territory. Don't say you want to do something that you have never directly experienced. I think it would be better to just say "I don't know", that way you don't come off presumptuous.

If your answer to "Why medicine?" does not cleanly and obviously flow from your experiences, they probably will not remember it and it will get lost in translation through the whole process. I thought my explanation was clear, but next time I will be even more clear and to the point.

End the end, I'm glad I applied this year. She did say I was in a strong position for next year.

Good Luck to you all!!

Thanks Alaskahopeful for the information. My meeting isn't for a couple weeks and this is helpful to give me a sense of what to anticipate. 🙂

Best of luck with the re-application cycle.

Congrats to all you lucky folks who've gotten off the waitlist so far!

I just spoke with admissions....#26 has been accepted

Again Congrats on the offer, it feels a shyte-sight better than the other response.

I tried this once before and nobody answered, so what the hey. Is there anyone from the WWAMI Montana gang on this thread? I see some folks from Idaho and good 'ol AK but where are the MSU 2012 crew? Seriously you guys are making me feel lonely.... I know there are at least 19 others out there. To the Washington folks, way to go again good luck!

Since this site has kept me sane over the last month, I feel that it is my duty to let you know that they are at least through #27 on the WA list.

Thanks for the info, Alaskahopeful! That helps a lot. I'm also waiting to have my meeting with Dr. Teitz.

...but in the meantime, is anyone else a little mystified as to how this reapplication process works? Even if I get advice from Dr. Teitz, how will I have time to significantly improve my application in time to apply early for next year?? There's only a few weeks until the new application cycle starts, so there's not exactly enough time to make any major changes... Does this mean that I'm doomed to take two years off? Anyone have any thoughts/advice?

P.S. Congrats to all of you guys who have been accepted off the waitlist!

thanks for the update, septa! Are you #27, or did you call?

oh... Thatquestionguy, I emailed Stella. Took her a couple days to get back to me... But I still don't gave an appt set up. I know she said it was first come first served and I emailed right after I got my letter on April 10, but she said it would probably be July before I got to talk to teitz. I'm waitlisted, so I wonder if that is part of the delay. She said something in the original letter about rejected applicants get the meeting and they would give us that opportunity too, so maybe they won't meet with us until it looks likely that we'll be rejected? AlaskaHopeful, I don't know if that would apply to WWAMI state kids...

Its just a big black box to me, at this point.

yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'm going to apply as late as possible this time. I don't think it really matters when you apply for UW, since they don't have rolling admission.

yea, it is likely that I'll be rejected at this point, I don't know if that's why I got the meeting this early or if I was just quick to ask for a meeting...but it does make sense to only meet with those who are likely to be rejected.

I e-mailed Stella right as soon as I found out I was wait-listed and it took aloooong time for her to get back with me, so hang in there ya'll.

Me three. I think my master plan is to submit my AMCAS early, but only enter one school (and not UW!). I think my PS/extracurrics are pretty solid, all tie in to a common theme, and are probably not the problem with my application. Then I'll hear from Teitz in Julyish and see what she says, study like crazy for the MCAT, take the MCAT again in late August, and when I get scores back, decide what to do. If I do well and Teitz has no other major areas of weakness to point out, I'll add on UW and some other schools. If not, I'll chill til next year. I don't want to waste my UWSOM attempts if there's something glaringly wrong with my app, but I also don't want to wait too much longer.

UW does rolling admissions... but they're not as hardcore about it as most places seem to be. So applying late probably won't hurt us much at UW, where it would most places. OHSU is even less into rolling admissions.

Meanwhile, I guess I'm still waiting... Can someone kick the waitlist in the *** and get it to move a little faster?

Oh, and septa... Congratulations!

HIVdoc2b,
oh yea, you're right about rolling admissions, I was thinking only about WWAMI admissions

hey your plan sounds great. Teitz was very thoughtful and fair, so it will be worth hearing from her for sure.

I didn't get my app in until November. . and didn't get my secondary done until January 15th! I got in.

Meanwhile.. with the same schedule, I got rejected without an interview at OHSU. Given, that is OOS.

yea, someone I know in AK had an almost identical experience with the timing and acceptance. Two accepted Alaskans that I know also didn't get interviews at OHSU.

Congrats on your acceptance BTW!!!!

I know timing wasn't that important for us WY WWAMI people...we all had interviews the same week so no matter when you turned in your primary or secondary you didn't get an interview till Feb. I got my primary verified Oct 15th and secondary in on Jan 10th.

Well, I called today and no one got off the Alaska waitlist - all 20 have given "firm committments."

I think I will finally have to give it a rest and look forward to next year.

Good luck to all you waitlisters!!

Awww ****... I'm sorry AlaskaHopeful. I'll hold out hope that three of them get accepted with a full ride off the waitlist to Stanford, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, etc... Otherwise, at least it sounds like you're in a pretty good position for next year. Keep your chin up - it'll happen, one of these days.

Oh man 🙁 Sorry to hear that. I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone changes their mind or is on the waitlist for another school! If you don't get in this year I am positive you will next! Best of luck!

Aw, man...really sorry to hear that, Alaskahopeful. 🙁 Hope you'll have a chance to stop thinking about applications for awhile and relax and enjoy the beginning of summer.

Also thanks so much for the reapplication ideas, guys. I hope we'll all get in next year and be classmates!!

Anyone up for calling to find out how our favorite waitlist is moving? I'm in lab meeting right now (yay for iPod Touches and being able to send email!) and will likely be unable to call today... but I'm curious to know how the list is shrinking. By leaps and bounds would be my preference!

I've decided that if the list doesn't make it to at least 35 by the end of the week, I have to suck it up and register for the MCAT. Eww. Otherwise I'll wait until the day AMCAS submission opens up.

Im in at #29, as of may 15.

What do you call someone who had to apply a few times before getting into medical school? A DOCTOR!

Hang in there, alaska hopeful! You'll get there...

Nathan - congrats! HIVdoc - I think you might make 35 by the end of the week!

Jem - well, they actually have to graduate before I call them Doctor, but yeah... 😛

Indeed, congrats to Nathan. Woohoo!

I just called for the official waitlist scoop, and the news isn't real great. They've offered spots through #30, and have 10 tentative acceptances and the rest are firm. So, the best they'll do is probably #40... For those of you between 30 and 40, here's hoping for great news for you!

HI everyone,

I'm a long time reader and a first time poster. Just wanted to start off by saying thank you for all the info I gained by reading the posts.

Anyway, I recently had my exit interview last thursday with Dr. Teitz and she was quite helpful. As "Alaska Hopeful" stated, she wanted to make sure people knew what they were going into. She told me shadowing experiences were very important (www.wafp.net, is the site she gave me).

I'm an unranked alternatelister (probably like many of you) but after the exit int. I felt good about my prospects for next year. Bottom line, make sure you match up your qualities with UW and make sure your experience backs it up. Also, check shadow experiences on SDN, there is a helpful article.

Thanks again

Did I scare y'all off with my last post, or what? It's awful quiet here.

I got my exit interview email yesterday. Guess that means it's really pretty much over. Stella says not to submit AMCAS until after your exit interview... but that means being complete late if you reapply this year. Anyone got any comments/perspectives on this?

For those who did well (>30) on the MCAT, how did you study?

Anyone else heard anything new about acceptances from the waitlist? Are we ALL sunk for this year?

Peace (and chicken grease)...
