interviewed Oct 15th and still waiting. Must have given one crap of an interview...

Applied last year, waited until April, didn't get in. Know a few first time applicants very similar to the "last year" me, who already received the bad news. Maybe this means the final pool will be smaller, or maybe it means that Dr. Teitz ranks certain features differently than Dr. Sampson, who knows.

Either way, we can all just sit back, relax, and enjoy the wait.

All state excom meetings are now over, right? The only one remaining is the biggie at the end of March?

I hear ya. I interviewed early October as well and I'm ready for this to all be over...hopefully with a good outcome. It'd be a pretty harsh blow for my self-esteem to wait this long just to get slapped down when you feel so close. What are you guys doing to bide the time until the final EXCOM meetings? Pretending to be interested in classes has lost its allure for me.....maybe its time for a video game marathon until the end of March.

I hear ya both. Been waiting since November. Did same thing last year, only to get rejected on April 3, just like McDoogle. To answer your thought, yes, this year the wait pool is much smaller, with people being bounced earlier....leaves more hope for us.

If you haven't already (and are into video games) get Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band, that will EASILY get you through the next 3 weeks...I've got graduate work + video games to bide the time, a week long medical trip to Honduras, and another interview to keep me busy til then, but it still seems slow.

Oh, and as far as te calendar is concerned, there are two more EXCOMs this week (wed. and fri.) and then the three day marathon Mar 26-28. Whether this weeks EXCOM meetings are for a certain WAMI state, or what, who knows...

Hey Dane--

are you going to Honduras with any particular program?

Sounds like a really great distraction!

Actually, it's a very long and strange connection to how I got involved. There's no website or anything. It's a group of doctors, nurses, translators (mostly high school students each year doing a spanish class thing I think), most of whom are based in New Jersey. They have been going annually for the last 18 years, and last year was my first year. The group (this year, about 50) travels to very remote small villages and sets up clinics for the citizens and their children for medical and dental care. It's quite an amazing trip, and the people of Honduras love it when we come through. Again, strange how a guy from Seattle ends up going to Honduras with a bunch of people from New Jersey, but it all works out... Unfortunately, I only get to spend a fraction of the trip with them as I need to come back to DC as classes will resume...

are you fluent in Spanish?

I was thinking that if I knew I got into the UW it might be awesome to leave my job and do the intensive Spanish program at the UW this summer.

Wow, you guys are doing so many interesting things! Wonderful 🙂

It's not too difficult for me to pass the time by. Work keeps me ultra busy, and if not that, then my family (parents, siblings, grandparents). The motivation that keeps me going is that I'm working in the hospital that I hope to one day come back to as a full-fledged physician. Who knows! I'll just keep my fingers crossed and keep praying until then 🙄

By the way, if any of you want to practice Spanish, I'm fluent. La la la... okay, lunch is over. Back to work!

I am not fluent in Spanish. I actually speak better French than Spanish. I taught myself some spanish last year before going, and learned an incredible amount while I was there. I intend to add more words to my vocab this time around.

If you can afford to take the time off, learn some spanish this summer before classes start. If you got some good spanish under your belt, you'd be in great shape to do a first year RuOP in someplace like Prosser or Yakima and you'd be able to communicate easily with a large number of your patients. This is all assuming we get in of course....

That's not a bad idea either. If I get in, I may consider that program as well. Spanish is quite fun, and pretty easy to grasp in a short period of time. Knowing another romance language can have its consequences though...

If anyone's interested, final decisions for Alaska WWAMI were made on Friday. E-mails go out today for acceptances and letters next week for not-accepted/alternate listed. Good luck to all the "under consideration" crowd.

Best of luck to you my friend. If you don't get an e-mail today for some reason, just call the office tomorrow and have them tell you, if you can stomach that. Last year, I went in there immediately after doing some volunteer work at Harborview and had them tell me to my face on the day of final decisions....though I'm sure that wasn't fun for them...

so are all the states included in the final ranked waitlist? or does each state have its own?

As much as I thought I knew about this whole process, that I am unsure of. Logically, it would make sense that each state would have it's own separate list, albeit MUCH smaller, considering we have 120 seats for WA residents, versus 16 (or whatever it is) for Alaska.

I do know that the WAMI states get no more or less spots than their designated amount, so that leads me to believe that they must have their own lists.

Example: Idaho has 17 extremely overqualified applicants for 16 spots. Washington has 119 qualified applicants and one really crappy applicant. Unless they bend the rules, which they most likely wouldn't, believe it or not, all those WA residents would get a spot in the med school, while that 17th overqualified applicant would get the shaft... As far as I know, it all has to do with the WAMI states governments paying UW for a set number of slots in each medical school class, meaning UW theoretically will never grant entry to more than the designated amount...

Well, I spent last week stressing and have so far not been this week. Which is good, and I'm proud of myself. :0) Then again, the week is young.

Work (research - working on several subcontracted projects with looming deadlines) and volunteering will keep me reasonably busy until the end of March... and what little free time I have will be spent in the mountains jamming in as much skiing as possible. Hopefully that will keep me occupied. It's either that or start studying for the MCAT again!!

Ok. I'm gonna try and stay off of SDN for a day or two - good luck to y'all in the meantime!

Thanks for the good luck wish - same to you. No e-mail today, so I'm pretty bummed. I'll call tomorrow morning.

I believe you are right - each state must have its own alternate list. Alaska has 20 slots - no more no less - if you're from Alaska, you hope to be one of the 20. Around 50 applicants received interviews this year.

thanks for the info dane and good luck alaskahopeful--I'm crossing my fingers for you!

Yeah...I'm on the Wyoming waitlist...:scared:

Good luck guys... getting pretty anxious.

But it's time for March Madness! Too bad I'll have to watch other schools instead of the Huskies... 😡

For those who interviewed for Alaska WWAMI have any of you gotten an e-mail of acceptance yet? My status finally changed this morning from "Application complete" to "Action Taken 3/11, but haven't gotten an e-mail. I have heard though that they sometimes do not send an acceptance e-mail for a couple days after the status changing. I am just curious as to when I should give up hope.

Just call the office and ask. They're happy to tell you over the phone. Just have to be prepared for one of three answers, two of which are not as desirable as the third...

I called this morning and am waitlisted for Alaska. -#3 - Ow!
I guess that means I have a good chance next year if I can improve my app, though.

Good luck Runnttf

Man, I'd kill for a #3 spot for WA waitlist....

You think that's bad?? You assume that all 20 people will accept?? I bet three people bail and head to warmer climates (CA, etc...) and you make it...keep us posted... Good luck man, don't get too down on it....

Thanks Dane,
I'm not sure what my chances are. I'll get in touch with last year's waitlisters and see if I can find out..keep you posted

thanks and good luck to you too, ruraldr

yeah. i have a friend who applied last year and didn't get in. now she's on the waitlist this year. does anyone know how many spots are available at the UW this year? I heard they were expanding by 20 spots.

Yes indeed. There are 20 new spots available, all of which are at a new WWAMI site in Spokane, like Pullman, for WA residents.

All these updates are making me nervous!!!! :scared: Does anyone know how it works for OOS applicants???

I think it's pretty much the same for OOS. We'll find out at the end of the month, but your waitlist and acceptance # are less than WA residents.... the fact that you are this far as an OOS is a good thing too...most other OOS people have been weeded out...

P.S. I have been posting so regularly on here because I have a big physiology test coming up and this is my only good means of procrastinating... plus i am pretty prepared so it's easy to distract myself. Expect me to disappear pretty much after this Thursday (maybe...)

Well I just called and found out that I'm not going to be going to UW next year. Fortunately my second choice was the new DO school in Yakima and I got in there so that will pad the dissappointment a little. Good luck to the rest of you and God bless.

aww. sad to hear that but, then again, a big congrats on Pacific Northwest University in Yakima!

Does anyone know how many spots there are for just WA state residents?

hey runttF, sorry about the UW and Congrats on Yakima! Yakima is beautiful, and you can get some great Mexican food out there (I particularly like the place across the street from Miner's) What did you think of the Yakima school? I heard about it too late to apply this year, but would definitely consider it next year.

And Alaskahopeful--congrats on your waitlist spot--I hope that there is the movement that dane predicts!

When I interviewed at PNWU I really loved it. The faculty seem committed to turning it into a top-notch primary care school. They already have clinical and residency rotations set up all over the northwest - including Alaska. I should be able to spend the better part of my third and fourth years in Alaska. Overall, it's definitely a great school and I'm looking forward to going there this fall.

Good luck to all of you!

Inaugural class. Should be sweet. For those of us interested in staying in the NW and primary care, that's a great alternative...i wish i had known about it sooner...

Alaska pulled 2 off the waitist last year according to a current student - so there's at least some hope for anyone lurking that's high on the alternate list.

Sorry about WWAMI, Runnttf. I had a long conversation with PNWU and sounds like they have some excellent people onboard and committed to students from the WWAMI states, congratulations!

thanks ruraldr - appreciate it

husky - I think 120 WA slots for UW if I'm not mistaken.

reading last years posts, some on the waitlist didn't find out their eventual status until May - too long.

I heard that with a 3.5 and 9 9 9 on the mcat you get an auto interview invite if you are IS. Do you still have to do the secondary?

If any of you IS and WWAMI people wouldn't mind posting some stats and general info about your application I'd really appreciate it. I will be applying IS for 2009 and am getting kind of anxious.

Also, if you wouldn't mind taking a look at my MDapps that'd be great. I will add that I am very interested in primary care and possibly getting my MPH to focus on health promotion in urban underserved communities.

Hey there,

As far as I know, everyone has to complete the secondary--its a good chance to let the UW know what makes you want to apply to them specifically.

I think that the UW is one of the better schools for looking at folks with a range of scores and caring about you as an entire person--including your ECs. You should check out the other MDapps of folks who have applied/interviewed/accepted to get a good sense of the range of grades/mcats and ecs.

Good luck with starting the application cycle and on your mcat!

Doc Henry
Yes, the auto-interview cut-offs are correct, and I KNOW PEOPLE 😉 who got an interview with lower numbers. And, yes, you'll write a very easy secondary.

As I understand it, all applications are reviewed by a real person in admissions who actually reads at least some of it, so I think you should get their attention if you have a decent MCAT.

Your ECs are MUCH better than mine and most others I've seen. 50% of your score is based on your interview and everything in your application except MCAT and GPA. With your experiences and a good, relaxed, interview, you should have a good edge. GOOD LUCK, I may see you in two years.

Thanks a lot. I forgot to mention; my weighted GPA for UWSOM will be about 3.5-3.55, assuming I did the cut-offs in about the same places that they will.

So I have been waitlisted...does anyone by chance know when the accepted people have to commit for sure? I just want to have an idea how long to have my hopes up! It looks like last year it was around the middle of May.

May 15th is the day that everyone must have only one acceptance. That's usually when waitlist movement begins. Of course, that doesn't mean you have no chance before. For UW in particular, if you're on the ranked list and you're fairly high up, you have a pretty good chance.

I'm guessing you're from a WAMI state?

Alright, I'm going to be very forthright and maybe a little harsh in my criticism of your application, so here goes.

First, to answer your question, here is how the process works for in-state applicants. A weighted GPA and a cumulative MCAT of 27 (9s on each) will grant you an automatic interview. However, that doesn't mean you don't fill out a secondary. You go through the whole process, just as every other applicant does. You especially WANT to do this as well, because there is an autobiography to write in the secondary, and you clearly have a long list of things you have done that have led you to medicine. Once your secondary is complete, you will receive an interview almost immediately (maybe a week or so).

Now, as for your application, I looked at your activities, GPA, and MCAT. I will tell you that my MCAT is a 29, and last year when I applied, and got rejected, and met with the dean afterwards to discuss improvements, he alluded to the fact that my MCAT score was low. An MCAT of 27 will hurt you a lot for applying to UW. It will be fine for many of the other schools on your list (though you shouldn't waste your money at USC, because I'll tell you right now that they will offer you a secondary, and definitely not offer you an interview, simply because they lean heavily on scores, and with a sub 3.5 and 27, you would need a miracle or connection to make that happen... I know you don't want to, but re-taking the MCAT and getting above a 30 would be very beneficial to your UW app. Your ECs are very strong, but the UW doesn't ignore MCAT or GPA in favor of those, they look at the whole package.

You will undoubtedly get into a med school this time around, but don't put all your eggs in the UW basket. It seems they really enjoy rejecting people and having them re-apply, to see what changes they will make and that they are dedicated to going to UW and primary care. I would retake the MCAT as soon as possible. If UW is your absolute biggest desire, it won't hurt you, since you already have an auto-interview. Getting above a 30 will be a tremendous help.

**This is all my opinion, and not the word of the school. Any facts I have spit out are 99% from personal experience, or the word of other applicants. 1% is from the mouths of admissions employees. Additionally, take everything I have said with a grain of salt. I am stating my opinion and what I think will most benefit your application, since it seems like you have already put your heart into UW.

As a side note, don't get too discouraged if you don't get into UW. I didn't get in last year, and I may not get in again this year. I was really bummed last year, and it's not worth the heartache. You're going to be a doctor eventually, you may just train somewhere you hadn't planned. This is a stressful process, but it doesn't need to be. If you invest too much emotion, that's when you begin to let yourself down when disappointment strikes. With every new happening in the process, look at it from a positive perspective, and be thankful you're a smart enough individual to even apply to med school 🙂

TBPAP-

Did they rank you on the waitlist? Or is it unranked?

Alright, I'm going to be very forthright ... be thankful you're a smart enough individual to even apply to med school 🙂

Lots of words. But, I'd agree with it mostly. At the same time, as long as the MCAT isn't too bad and there aren't any major red flags (like a 6 in any single section), a good interview is equally important (something mentioned).

Yeah true. Any maybe I'm a little bitter still that a 29 wasn't strong enough to get me in last year. (Although, in retrospect, I had a mediocre interview, and not many strong ECs back then).

PJ is right, no red flags...but the applicant with a 27 on the MCAT doesn't leave much room for insurance in other parts of the app.

And to doc henry, take into consideration the comments on USC. Also, are you aware that their financial aid package is in the $65-70K range?? (That ends up being a lot of debt to repay after four years)

Upon re-reading your application info, it appears that you haven't taken the MCAT yet. I was thinking you got a 27. Just nail the MCAT and you'll be good to go.

Hey guys, check out this awesome blog that is updated by UWSOM students. It has general cartoons strips and blogs that talk about the everyday workings of med school.

http://yellow-magic.blogspot.com/

bump.

anyone hear anything new?

I'm way bored at work. So I'm reading old UWSOM threads and waiting for someone else to join me in this one.

Anyone got other acceptances? If so, where from? I've got six rejections and five pre-interview holds (which at this point, realistically, are rejections...) so it's the UW or bust. Since UW has always been far and away my top choice, I'm not lamenting the silence of the other 5 schools, but please UW, let me in! I've been treading water in this pool for nearly six months...

Hey, so here's an idea. Anyone brave want to call and ask how many folks are in the pool waiting for how many spots (IS)? Last year it was 400 for 30... Be interesting to know how our odds stack up, but I haven't got the guts to call.

Y'all seem like nice folks so I hope it works out for all of us!

Shouldn't you guys find out tomorrow whether you're In, Rejected or Waitlisted?
