va schools: evms vs UVA vs vcu

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got my MD from MCV (ahem, VCU), so I'll weigh in. I'm biased, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

UVa: Great school, very research oriented. My only reservation would be the amount of time they spend doing outside rotations, which I've heard is quite a bit.

EVMS: Their elaborate fake patient program really turned me off. MCV hires them for various clinical training experiences, which is fine. After you hit the wards, however, you realize how contrived the and silly the "playing sick" game is. Imagine Step 2 CS month after month.

MCV: Best patient population of the three, by far. Tons of really sick people and the education is very hands on. Parking sucks, but I loved living in The Fan.

If I were you I wouldn't let anyone else's opinions (including mine) sway you too much. Just wait to interview and then see for yourself.

I think the best thing would really be to go to the interview days and make your own decision. I have to admit that EVMS is my first interview, which means that I don't have much of a reference. My main point is that I expected to just be alright with EVMS but turned out to be very impressed. Whereas I once just thought it would be an acceptable place to go if I had no other options, now I think I'll have a harder time making a choice if I'm given the luxury. But who knows what you'll think when you go? You might hate it.
