Hey all-

I was wondering everyone's opinions on if I should include under Volunteer Experience that I had a monologue in the Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues performed at my medical school. I put some significant time in, and it is a play about women's health and well-being, so I was just wondering if highlighting this would be a plus, or if it would freak out some conservative PDs/have them worry that I'm a militant feminist/be the subject of resident's jokes, etc.

I have enough good stuff not to include it, but it would be a shame to leave it off and not show I'm well-rounded.

Serious replies only, thanks guys!

If you decide to put it in, I'd suggest doing it without mentioning the name of the play. You could say that you were involved in a theater production to support women's health issues.

I don't know if this was the right thing to do, but I didn't include any of my artistic endeavors in the "volunteer" section, even if they were directly related to medicine/health. I tried to mention them elsewhere when appropriate (i.e. the "hobbies/interests" section, my personal statement, etc.), but I thought it would seem a bit silly if I put those sorts of things under volunteer experience.

That sounds like a great item to put in activities/interests, instead of the boring stuff the rest of us put there.

I disagree about not putting the title. It is a well known theater piece and book, and there is nothing wrong with the v-word. I bet a fair number of PDs will recognize it (and not in a bad way).

What specialty are you applying for?

If you're applying for OB or Family Med, sure, include it.

If you're applying for neurosurgery or ortho....I'm not sure that would be a good idea.

I'm applying for IM

I agree with Jenn, I think Vagina Monologues is well recognized and will make you interesting. Also depends on the region of the country you're applying to, if it's one of the coasts, it should be fine, but I'd be hesitant with some places in the South or Midwest...
