I know someone, person A that compounded a valtrex ointment in his home for person B. Person B has a prescription for valtrex tablets. It worked like a charm!

Any legality issues here? Pharmacy law wise or even patent wise?

If the ointment was compounded pursuant to a valid prescription, then you have no legal issues. If the prescription was for Valtrex tablets and the pharmacist made an ointment at the request of the patient, the pharmacist broke the law. Patent-wise, I think you're just getting into the standard FDA vs. compounding debate.

On a side note, why valacyclovir ointment? I thought it needed to pass through the GI tract before it could be converted to acyclovir.

can't we get it changed to zovirax?

(just a random thought before you guys attack me on equivalency issues)
