I have a 34 on mcat from august, i was hoping to get an interview, they are still reviewing but based on PEMBERELY. GOD DANG SHE HAD A 42 and they said no???????????????????????????????????????????????? i might as well forget about this school

I've had days when I wished the admissions process was a spreadsheet-sort by MCAT score... like every day since the scores came back.

But it's not. Vandy's committee seems very interested in basic research, of which I haven't any, and my GPA stinks. People with more "balanced" credentials -- good across the board instead of fantastic in some areas and awful in others -- probably actually have a better chance.

So don't give up hope. :luck: :luck:

Nonsense! People on this forum are always trying to reduce the admissions process to a clear one-criterion system of advantage/disadvantage: everybody who is/does X will acheive result Y...

I was just listing some of the factors that I thought might have influenced Vandy's decision in my case. Who knows, I could be soothing my own ego with stuff like GPA and research, and the reality was that my PS and personality stank. :scared:

I think they should take you. :luck: :luck:

Vanderbilt was an amazing school, and I was very happy to get my acceptance in the mail today. (Interviewed 10/05/06 for all who are interested) I just have a little quick question... Anyone know how Vanderbilt and the surrounding area is for alternative life styles?

Nasvhille is the "New South"... Take that for whatever its worth.

So... i have an interview at vanderbilt coming up. Only, I wont have my prereqs done on time, and they should know this - I have a fellowship abroad until june. What do I do? i feel like if i call attention to it, they'll nix me... but it's really stressing me out. has anyone gotten interviews/acceptances that wont have the prereqs done on time?

Looks like they are no longer calling - someone here just got accepted -only recieved snail mail- no phone call, no e-mail- this process is all so confusing isnt it, just adds to the sense of randomness ? wonder why they stopped calling acceptances ?

They called last Tuesday night for some interviews between 10/13 - 10/17. Rumor has it that the adcom meets every Monday, but that doesn't mean Dean Zic is necessarily in town for phone calls that same night.

Dr Durden- There seem to be a fair number of Vandy undergrads who matriculate at the medical school - how many (% wise) do you reckon enter through the direct admit program after sophomore year ? if they are admitted do they have to attend or can they apply to other schools their senior year ?

Vanderbilt students typically make up about ~15 out of ~100 students in each class. Approximately 5 of those are admitted directly after sophomore year. Practically everyone in this program took Vandy up on its offer as they simply had to take the MCAT; the score did not matter. The program used to not be binding, but I believe it is now. It takes much more than good stats though to get admitted that early; you have to want to do something unique with your undergrad career that would normally prohibit completing the usual pre-med program (eg go to Egypt to study heiroglyphics).

I'm just a traditional applicant who was lucky enough to get some love from the alma mater. Good luck! :luck:

at what time of day do they tend to call?

Dr. Zic called me at about 8:00 in the morning! I was still asleep and had to let it go to voicemail. But I had already gotten my letter so it was just a courtesy call on his part.

I got called at around 7 one night. Defintely past office hours.

can you tell us when you interviewed milkofamnesia? Please🙄 ?

Why the rolling eyes? Have I ever been asked before? I don't remember being asked. I think I posted it earlier anyway. 9/19

How do you feel about your undergraduate experience and the life style of the University community? Are you glad you went to Vanderbilt for undergrad? What is Nashville like? I am from the Northwest and I do not know much about this area of the country. I liked the look and feel of the place in the short time I was there.

The big round of acceptances around Oct 15th went out at all times. Now that it's only a few a week, it seems to be in the evening, about 7-8 PM CST.

Well as a Vandy senior, and I have to say I love both the school and city. People have this stereotype that it's nothing but a hick town, but it's definitely not true. However, I came from a Midwestern city of about the same size (~1 mil), and not from a northeastern megalopolis.

The downtown area and nightlife might be a bit smaller than some are used to, but there are plenty of bars, restaurants, and live music joints. If you absolutely can't stand the thought of being anywhere near country music or ever hearing snatches of songs on the streets, I'd stay away, but otherwise you're sure to find something that suits you. It is Music City USA after all, not Country Music City. There are your more standard clubs about half a mile from campus, which seem fine to me, but might be less glamorous than some are used to. There's museums, parks (a full-size Parthenon replica is just across the street from campus), and other cultural icons, but again, they might not be able to compete to yours.

For sports there is Titans football and Predators hockey, then a minor league baseball team which might be more fitting on a student budget. Vandy itself is in the ultracompetitive SEC conference, but being as small as were are, we often get crushed by public powerhouses like U of Tennessee, Ole Miss, etc. Instead of tailgating, students get dressed up for football games, but the visiting fans--who are often swamp the home fans in numbers--have some pretty huge and elaborate set-ups. We do pretty well in the less televised sports, alright in basketball, but not so hot in football.

The school itself is top-ranked (ok, not ivy league) but cut-throat is the last word I would ever use to describe it. Everyone seems laid-back, content, and cooperative. I even hear the med students are amongst the happiest anywhere by some survey. The whole student body does have a southern, preppy bent, but oddly enough it is very national in scope. Politically, the students might lean conservative, but this is an ever so slight a tilt. I think it just seems ultra-conservative because our top-20 peers are so liberal. The administration, however, is very progressive, and the Dem students are definitely the more vocal of the two parties.

The campus itself is gorgeous and feels like a park. It's trees are even nationally protected. Yet you should know that while the med center/school and college portion share a continuous campus, they try to keep them segregated. The medical school is renovating, adding on a few new buildings, and revamping the curriculum from its very traditional current structure. There's plenty of research going on as well in just about every field.

In case it wasn't obvious, I doubt I could be happier anywhere else. Feel free to ask me any other questions, either in the forums or by PM.

as a vandy undergrad too, i second most of what dr. durden said. i would just say that in my opinion nashville/vandy has its merits (downtown is fun, its not too large of a city, great school, love the students) but also its faults. i don't think i could have picked a better undergraduate school for ME. the point is that vandy works for some but not others. it is very much a bubble, kinda homogeneous in terms of lifestyle and class and even race. but they are working on it. so when someone asked about the progressiveness of nashville/vandy area, i might have to say that it probably isn't what you want it to be, but its not as bad as you think either if you use southern stereotypes. also what i love most about vandy is that it is in the south but not southern, take that for what you will. but as dr. durden mentioned, the professional schools/graduate schools are really separate/segregated from undergrad and from what i've seen of the med students they are like a total 180 from the typical VU undergraduate(with the exception of some of the law school students).

dr. durden and EBI summed it up very well. although i would disagree with one of your points EBI: "kinda homogeneous in terms of lifestyle and class and even race." i would say this is true if you want it to be. you can always find your own niche that doesn't fit the "norm" at vandy, whatever that might be. as far as interaction with the grad students (med, law, etc...) it does seem a little segregated. at the same time, i've been in couple of student organizations that have active participants from the undergrad and grad students (from med, law, and bsci departments). my undergrad experience here has been amazing 🙂
