Sufjan ftw. Although my "Top Albums of 2007" definitely runs closer to Band of Horses, Pinback, and Rogue Wave. I was unimpressed by Arcade Fire's new effort (It's still better than MOST crap that's put out nowadays, but nowhere near "Funeral") and *really* unimpressed by both Animal Collective and Panda Bear, BOTH of which are being all kinds of up-talked on PopMatters and Pitchfork. Bleh.

Noooo, Panda Bear is love! Sigh. Are you a Grizzly Bear fan? There's also a band that's from this area called Annuals that is getting kind of big now that has gotten some comparison to Band of Horses, Broken Social Scene, Tapes n Tapes, etc. I went to high school with one of them.

What??? I'm no music snob by a long shot, but Jason Mraz, Badly Drawn Boy, and Duncan Sheik definitely aren't obscure.

They are among people my age! haha 🙂

Seriously though, do you really think Badly Drawn Boy is a well-known band in the US? Ask 100 young people and I bet <5 would have ever heard of them...maybe not even 1 depending on who you ask. None of my med school classmates knew who the heck they were just a few years ago. And Duncan Shiek had one hit song in the 90's and hasn't been heard from since, except among people who are cultish fans...now he's doing musical scores and the like.

In any case though, it hardly matters. But why all the music snobbitude here??? Does it somehow make someone super duper cool (sorry, "kewl") and better than everyone else because they know about a band that no one else does? Most bands are obscure because they just aren't that good. If you enjoy someone's music, then just sit back and enjoy it. Who cares how many other people do or do not enjoy it too? I was just trying to give people a flavor for the diversity of bands touring here. Sorry if I wasn't obscure enough to suit the true music snobs in the audience. 🙄

Just hit the Cradle and enjoy a show! 🙂

Hey, I didn't say I thought TommyGunn's mentioned-bands were obscure. And the Decemberists still carry the flag for "indie" even if they are pretty well-known nowadays, I would say. C'mon, who else uses the word "dirigible" in a song? Even with a main-y label and a multiple-show stint on Colbert. . . I think that counts.

I mean, all of these ARE relatively obscure for the majority of our Jay-Z/Kelly Clarkson lovin' contemporaries. . . but I was trying to minimize my snobbery. 🙂

*shameless plug* but clearly the best new female solo artist for this year is Sara Bareilles. Go get "Little Voice" RIGHT NOW before I shoot you all with love darts and bunny arrows as punishment.

OMG, you know who Sufjan Stevens is??? PGP wins. I have no clue who most of those groups are, but I know I'm not a big fan of Animal Collective. Just not my style. Also, the cover art for Strawberry Jam kind of freaked me out.

Hey, I listen to Kelly Clarkson, too. 🙂 *goes off to get "Little Voice"*

Pagemma, you should really listen to Kanye's new album Graduation... it has some sweet songs. Kanye has stylin-ness too you know

PS: Kelly Clarkson is my future wife.

Hah, well, I got introduced to Badly Drawn Boy through my little brother, so I only assumed that's what all the cool kids were listening to these days. And I'll admit Duncan Sheik is a little dated, but come on, who hasn't heard "Barely Breathing"?

And sorry, I wasn't trying to be a pretentious snob there. I just wanted to give credit where it was due. Those artists probably don't qualify as international superstars, but they all have large fanbases, and even we of the uninformed masses can appreciate them, too. 🙂

PGP! I'd already heard Love Song before and liked it, but I had no clue who it was. Thanks. 🙂

I'm an M1 at Vandy. If I were making this choice, I would look at two things: my impression I got at the school and the curriculum. Essentially, do you feel like you would fit in, and do you want to do Duke's compressed curriculum. You can't go wrong with either choice, though.

I love it here so far, and I don't think there's any question that you're going to get research experience (possibly pubs). My friends from Duke undergrad do say that Nashville is better though 😉

Good luck, and congrats on having two fantastic choices!

You guys are going to scare people away with all your Emo crap. Also, I love Kanye almost as much as I love LAWRENCE, my new favorite book.

Words of wisdom from the higher-ups. 😛 I have new bookmarks on my browser, ready to look up some shows for the spring! And thanks, tommygunn, now you've got me humming . . . "don't suppose it's worth the price it's worth the price the price that I would pay" . . .

Anyway. Sufficient hijacking has been completed. Back to the topic at hand. 😱

EDIT: Oh, and Happy Christmas! If I see ANY posts from any of you 2s or 1s from tomorrow, imma kick yo ass when we get back. Or, worse, make you listen to the awful excuse for a band "Paramore" on some Bose headphones during your next shelf and/or microbiology exam.

Good ole diosa and her 105.1. Can't believe I thought that you were the music snob when we coulda been jammin Kanye the whole time.

As a Duke undergrad, I'm definitely applying to Duke Med. I have heard great things about Vandy as well. Thanks to the OP and everyone who responded. This was just the thread I was looking for. And it appears I haven't done enough to investigate the music scene in Durham.
