you like vandy more than wash u?

Yup.

The schools were really close to me. Like 1a and 1b, rather than 1 and 2.

But I've just had a really good feeling about Vandy for a long time, and I sent them an LOI about a month ago.

ND2005, go to Wash U, please!!! It might help the rest of us and I'm sure Wash U is a great school.

Umm...

I already withdrew from WashU, when Vandy offered.

Nothing to be done about it now, even if I wanted.

Yeah I know, I was joking. Hopefully I'll see you there next year!

I guess I should post that I spoke with Dr. Helderman today and he said that the class is now full. He called 10 people Mon and Tues and now any movement that occurs will be based on if people in the class give up their spots.

Either way, it doesn't look like there's going to be a whole lot of movement unfortunately. Ya'll can call and see which tier you're in (only the upper group has any chance of being called apparently).

Crap! That is totally NOT cool. >sigh<

In all fairness, that's how all schools work. They are all full until people who are accepted withdraw. Just a few weeks ago, they had more than a full class as you know!

Well, sure. Maybe I should rephrase -->

Dr Helderman : "It doesn't look like there will be much movement this year."

🙄

Yeah, nevermind. I'm probably being a bit too optimistic 🙁.

What really sucks is that a week ago (literally), Helderman told me in person that I was in the top tier and that I would get a call off the wait-list! No BS! I wish he didn't tell me that.

Man, that sucks sorry. Well, he also told me I was in the top tier and I haven't gotten a call yet.

Well, at this point, I think optimism is the way to go. It's very hard for me... but it's literally only been three days post May 15th. We have so much time left to get a call (which is both good and bad)!

I guess that's true. But they've been calling people all spring.

There was someone a while back who said they got called off the waitlist before the 2nd look weekend.

Yeah, I remember. I had assumed that was an isolated case, but I guess not.

Edit: Hey, why are you still posting on this thread? You're in...you should be partying it up! 😉

I kind of thought it was an isolated case too. I actually thought that person may have kind of lucked into the spot (ie someone withdrew right before the 2nd look, so the admissions office found a high-waitlister from the same area and pulled them in, rather than waste the plane flight and accomodations they'd already paid for)

edit:

Yeah...but I still have a 40 hour a week job that only requires about 20 hours a week of actual work...so I have way too much time to cruise SDN.

Does anybody know if Dawn Sharpe quit? Her email doesn't work anymore.
Just spoke to Jennifer Hinton, says I'm in the top tier, but movement will not occur unless people drop out.

Good luck to you guys!

No idea, but she was very sweet and helpful. So is Jennifer.

Guys, we need to convince the accepted people that they DO NOT want to go to Vandy, lol.

hey guys, i recently got in/accepted at vandy (sorry, but it is good for those wanting to go to washu...).

i look forward to meeting everyone in the fall!

Is that the second person in this forum who picked Wash U over Vandy!? Why doesn't anyone want to go to Wash U.

its not that i didn't want to go to washu, its just that i wanted to go to vandy more.

Does anyone know if Vandy is one of the toughest schools to get into (even compared to the top ten schools)? That's what I heard.

completely unsubstantiated gossip:

I have heard vandy has an excellent acceptances offered/acceptances taken ratio. i imagine this, combined with the small class size means that few people numerically are offered admission, which could be where this notion comes from.

this does seem to jive with the rumor that the waitlist moved 5 places on the 16th and then the class was complete.

again, speculation.

I picked $$ at Vandy over $$ at WashU. Nashville and Vandy are just awesome.

Hmmm...we're going to have to start a club or something.

On the difficulty of getting in. I think there are some factors that make it seem super hard:

-They interview a ton of people, so getting from interview to acceptance is a major hurdle (since they only accept about 1/5 or less of the students interviewed). Even a good interview isn't a guarantee
-The class size is small, so the number of spots are limited
-They start interviewing pretty early, so a late interview has lower chances
-They waitlist almost everyone post-interview, so the waitlist seems hopeless
-They have a good matriculation ratio, so the waitlist doesn't move a ton.

That said, I don't think it's as hard to get into as some of the very top schools (Harvard, Mayo, etc).

This makes me feel a lot better. 😉

This was sarcastic, right? It makes me feel awful! Like, waitlist was just a tease.

Of course, I was joking. 😉 Gotta find humor somewhere in this situation.

...

Any news ya'll?

I am assuming that since this thread found its way to page seven, that no one has gotten a call recently?

*sigh*

LLR-

two pieces of gossip, one good one bad

bad: i went to visit some friends from an old job and they told me about someone that was a pretty amazing non-traditional applicant and was accepted at a few places but was holding out for a vandy spot. i actually felt pretty guilty because while my app was good in certain places, it was weaker in a lot of the places she was strong in. anyhow, apparently she was told to "not expect more movement in the waitlist this year" in the last few days.

good: my ex girlfriend goes to drexel med and she got in off the waitlist in june. i remember waiting with her, feeling terrible and hearing rumors of the list not moving, and then it did. when talking about this it came out that one guy in her class had been still waitlisted the week before classes and at that point the waitlist was not showing signs of moving. he physically went to the campus and talked directly to the admissions people right before classes started, and they let him in. i know that after having been to different med schools, vanderbilt was for me and i was planning to do the same if it came down to the wire like that. it's risky and would cost you, but the way i saw it you wouldn't do any harm and the possible loss of the ticket/hotel cost could easily be justified by even a slight chance of getting in.

everything above is unofficial and unsubstantiated, but i thought i'd pass it along just the same as i'm now rooting for you and POR to get in.

Hey RC, thanks for that update. The bit about the waitlist not moving anymore is VERY discouraging (which I very much hope is false gossip!) but I kind of figured as much from talking to people in admissions. Do you know who told your friend that?

I'm definitely going to call Helderman again if it's mid/late July and I haven't heard anything but I don't know if a personal visit is feasible for me 🙁

This is what Jennifer told me a few days ago as I can recollect.

"There are two tiers now"

"The class is full and it was not behaving like it was last year (fewer withdrawals and less movement on the waitlist)"

"We will notify people where they stand June 10"

Also, me and my friend who Helderman said should "expect" to get a call (he told us this in the middle of May) have not yet received a call, and I'm doubting it will happen. Why does everyone love Vandy this year (seriously, just look at the Wash U people)! I bet they put crack in those little candies that are in the admissions office, and everyone wants to come back for more.

That explains everything. Who can resist candy + crack? 😛

Seriously, what's this about two tiers though? And June 10? I was told June 1.

Actually, maybe you're right, and it was June 1.

No, I was told the 10th as well and I live in Nashville so I was there in person. That means no static to screw with my hearing 🙂
She said they are in the process of going over people and deciding the keepers and rejections. It should be done on the 10th, but perhaps earlier. That's about all the info I got.

Vanderbilt only sends secondaries to those whom they choose to interview.

Does anyone remember what Vandy's computer facilities were like? I debating getting a laptop, but I may not if they have nice computer labs.

Does anyone have any information about spots opening up from accepted students going elsewhere? I guess we should expect more movement in June since that's when Waitlists get heated up.

Doko said:

Maybe a little bit but it looks like most of the accepted students are sticking with Vanderbilt. 🙁

Does anyone have any news? Or know of people who don't post on SDN (which is pretty unrepresentative of the real situation) who have gotten in recently?

Bumping for any news. Anyone?

I have a quick question: Why does everyone seem to be so obsessed with Vandy? I interviewed there in October, and was thoroughly disappointed. While the facilities were nice, I did not get a good vibe from the students I met, and I did not like the other people in my interview group at all!! The day was very disorganized, and I walked away unimpressed.

For the record, I was waitlisted & withdrew my app months ago.

To me, the school seemed like they were only interested in your undergrad institution, and not much else.

Just wondering...please do not take offense.

Well, for me I had the exact opposite experience.

-Got a great vibe from the students
-Liked my fellow interviewees (though that isn't really a huge concern...odds are only a couple of students from a single interview group will end up at the school)
-Day was very organized, and I walked away highly impressed.

I think that just shows how subjective impressions are on the interview day. Things change so much day to day (organized one day, disorganized the next); we meet so few people (I really liked the students I met...but it was only about 6 out of a class of 100, so who's to say if my impression was accurate).

There were a few other things I really liked:
-Location (both being in the south and the specific Vandy/Nashville area)
-Curriculum -- I like that it's a fairly traditional curriculum but with some twists thrown in (mostly the emphasis program). I also really like that you start taking electives your first semester. I always like having the freedom/responsibility of pursuing my own interests, and Vandy seems to click with that
-Reputation -- Everyone within the medical community that I know thinks super highly of Vandy
-Facilities -- they have good facilities right now, and some very nice new ones will be completed at the start of our 2nd year.
-Student body -- This is going to come off horribly, so I hesitate to put it, but I got this feeling that Vandy was the best (rankings wise) med school you can go to where the students are still "normal". At a couple of other (more highly ranked) schools their students seemed decidedly weird/nerdy.
-"Vibe" -- I just have had a great feeling about Vandy ever since I visited.

I agree I really like most people I know. It varries widely from year to year though so your class may be different.

wait i'd say duke students were pretty normal too? wouldn't you? sorry this is just an opinion question because i too would prefer normalcy over name and numbers(as long as they are all good schools).

I didn't apply to Duke, so I couldn't really tell you my impression on that

I didn't (is it snail mail perhaps?) but it doesn't really matter anymore. We are vying, along with 100 or so other people, for a few spots that MAY open up in the next two months. Fantastic. 🙄

I called this morning and they said they mailed us letters last week, so we should get them this week.
