Hello everyone! These are my top two schools that I have been accepted to thus far. I would greatly appreciate any insight on these institutions, especially from current OMS students or anyone who is well-versed with the advantages/disadvantages of these schools.

VCOM-Carolinas

Pros

  • Quite impressed by the campus facilities and their overall culture when I visited in-person
  • Seems to have a decent amount of research opportunities (located near the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute, some faculty research activity, etc.)
  • Established program for international medical service/outreach
  • The Greenville-Spartanburg metro area appears to be larger than Dothan, which I would prefer
Cons
  • Accredited with Heightened Monitoring (I have heard that this status was applied to all four locations because of the new branch campus. However, I am uncertain how true/unbiased that explanation is)

ACOM

Pros

  • Accredited (without heightened monitoring)
  • Option to participate in a Basic Science Bootcamp in the summer prior to the first year
  • Seems to have a good number of research opportunities as well, at least in terms of faculty activity
  • Associated with a community health system (Southeast Health)
Cons
  • Not sure if I fit as well into the culture of the school and/or the Dothan area

Summary: Essentially, I am leaning toward VCOM-Carolinas (due to school fit and location preference), however, I am unsure how to consider their accreditation status.

Also, if it makes any difference, the residencies I am currently most interested in eventually pursuing are Pediatrics or Psychiatry.
