Hi folks,

Since I have been PMing back and forth I thought we could start a list here so people could know who is going to VCOM as of this date. That way people who are trying to make up there mind could ask us why we chose VCOM over the other schools.
If you withdraw, take your name off the list.

Copy paste the names below into your post.

Right now I have my deposit in to VCOM and would love to go there. I have my interview next week at UVM (which is where I live with my husband and daughter) and we will see how that goes. I am truly torn.....

*addendum* it is supposed to be -50degrees (factoring in wind chill) here tonight, so my decision might be made easier if it stays this way for the rest of January 🙄

Congrats!! Glad you decided to post...where are you from in Tennessee??

Thanks! Congrats to you, too! I'm from Kingsport, TN. It is about 15-20 miles from Bristol TN/VA. I never thought that I could find a school that I really loved, but after seeing VCOM I knew that I had found it especially when I realized that at the end of the interview that I dreaded to leave. I am so excited!! I can't wait to actually get up there and get started! 😍

Yippee, we now know when classes will officially begin. Did everyone get the email today with the new info?

Hi VCOM Class of 2008!

I just found out that I was accepted! VCOM is awesome and their focus on students and medicine of the future is what attracted me. I just wanted to say hi but I still have decisions to make that will be extremely hard. I have to say though that I really felt comfortable and definitely wanted at VCOM and that is what matters.

Congratulations to all and to those in waiting - GOOD LUCK!

As AmyB says...NEVER GIVE UP!

Hey all,

I thought I read on a VCOM poster that there will be a meeting or gathering of Class of 2008 students sometime in May? Is that right...May 22nd? I'm not sure I haven't received any info yet...

You are correct. It is May 22(my son's 17th birthday)it is called accepted students day. They have extended the hours due to adding more info. It is open to spouses and families.

Hello VCOM Class of 2008!

Thanks for the info AmyB!🙂

Well, I called the Knollwood and Hunter's Crossing to find out if there were any 1 bedrooms open and to my dismay, there were none. :wow:

Anyhoo, it was just a preliminary check. I would've LOVED to lived within walking distance to school! The management company suggested Cedarfield. Anyways...I'll be in touch!

WWWOOOOO HHHHOOOOO!😀

Oh no. I am sooo sorry to hear that🙁 You are right, they are so close it would have been perfect. Are you on a waiting list? Did they think anything would come open?

To anyone who hasn't secured housing.... things can be rented now for a lease and payments to start in August. Places go fast so check into housing as soon as possible!!!!!!

Actually, they took my information and told me that all the 1 bedrooms are leased out until Aug 2005.😱 They have some 2 bedrooms or three bedrooms if I remeber correctly but I think I want to live alone (no offense to anyone but I've been living alone for a while).

They were right when they said the housing goes FAST!!!

Has anyone looked into other places that VCOM has recommended? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am SSOOO EXCITED but I need to finish school and 3 finals to go during the last part of April!!!!

Congratulations!!

This is such a cool link. I really loved browsing through the class of 2007's photos. You all look like you are enjoying the school and your classmates.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to say hi and that I am sending my deposit in today! I can't wait to meet everyone! Any ideas on housing? I still keep asking this question  .

Congrats to all!

Yippee, if you are sending your $1000 in, then I would venture to say you are going to be our classmate.

Once you send that in, Megan will start sending you emails. You need to email her and get on the housing email group. She sends things about people who are offereing duplexes, or apartments for rent, plus room mates looking for someone.

I know you want on your own, but there are options out there if you find yourself wanting a room mate.

I have bumped up our VCOM class 2008 in the Ostepathic forum,

Why don't we start posting things there and leave this one open for anyone who is still going to join us.

Here's our class link in the DO forum. See you there.

Hi,

I've been accepted to VCOM and WVSOM. I have some questions about VCOM:
1. How will students there match without a school track record or class rank?
2. Can you do rotations in yr 3 and 4 outside of Va?
3. Dress code??
4. Any info on why you chose VCOM over other schools.

Anyway, I was really impressed when I interviewed there and would like to hear some good and bad stuff about the school.

Thanks!

Hi and congrats on your acceptance. If you decide to take it, you will be going to class with a great bunch of people. As to this question, we will be the second class, so we are relying heavily on the class of 2007 to prove VCOM is a great school. That said though, the staff that has been chosen comes from well known schools. Dean Rawlins comes from KCOM, which as you know is the oldest school. She has a great reputation, which will work in our favor. Are you going on faith, ......yes. I feel if you work hard and get the grades and test scores that are good, you should have no trouble in matching.

2. Yes you can. There are rotations set up in WV, NC and I believe Kentucky.

3. Dress code???

3. Yes there is a dress code. You have to come to class dressed in a professional manner. VCOM believes you are entering a profession that demands professionalism and school is a great time to start getting used to it. You can wear scubs on lab day though which is great.

Thanks!

4. I chose VCOM for a variety of reasons. I felt at home when I interviewed there in Sept. It just felt right. I was impressed with the staff and students and their geniune love for their school. I love the area and the mountains. I want to be a rural primary care doc, so their big push towards that is another reason I chose them. There is enough shopping and places to eat and enough to do with it being a college town and being near Radford and Roanoke there are more than enough things to do on our off time.

As to any bad things. I think the only one I can come up with is that the lunch room and break area is too small and there is only 1 shower for showering after anatomy lab. But since most students live near by, I guess that is why there is only 1. Other than that I can come up with nothing negative. I think the newness is a plus and I think in another 5 years VCOM will be well-known as one of the best DO schools.

Good luck with your decision

I agree with AmyB...I did not find any negatives except for the minor one in size of the lunch room and breakroom.

As for dress code, they told us that it was business casual during class times only. After that, you can change into shorts or what not if you want to study in the library.

I too felt right at home and comfortable at VCOM, although I am not from VA but from the metropolitan area of Chicago. It was great being there and beautiful! In my opinion, the way I was treated at VCOM is a direct reflection of how I would be treated as a student. I was absolutely impressed at the personal attention given to me and I know that will lead to my success as well as future students. VCOM is focusing on providing the best medical education for the future.

As stated in my interview and as Amy stated above, the faculty was chosen carefully and come from the best intstitutions. The curriculm was modeled from the best and improved. So, it comes to taking from the best and making it better, which VCOM has already done and is working it out with the class of 2007, to make it even better for the Class of 2008!  👍 😀

My name is Matty from Wisconsin and I think it's great that we can chat ahead of time before we begin in Aug. I look forward to meeting you all in person. As for why I chose VCOM, it really felt like home when I visited there. Smaller town with all necessities close by. I also love the attitude of the school and faculty. I interviewed at VCOM and WVSOM on back to back days. I got the impression that the mentality of VCOM was "are we good enough for you" whereas the mentality of WVSOM was "are you good enough for us". Plus you can't argue with brand new facilities, great faculty from well established schools, and great classmates! Take care all and we'll talk soon.

1. How will students there match without a school track record or class rank?
2. Can you do rotations in yr 3 and 4 outside of Va?
3. Dress code??

____________________________________________________

Just a little insight from a current student ........

1. Currently we do not have class rankings, this may change in the future but as of right now you only receive your transcript which lists your grade for the class as well as the amount of credit hours and GPA calculated based on this info

2. You can do rotations in years 3 and 4 outside of VA. This does not only constitute the surrounding areas or VA, but is inclusive of any approved rotation located throughout the continental U.S.A. Basically, lets say you wanted to do a derm rotation somewhere in Texas, as long as its approved you can go there and do it. The only question would be if it is financially feasible for you to do it. At rotation sites that have been setup for us by VCOM, everything will be ready for you...........no extra work needed.

3. The dress code is business casual, but the Administration does not enforce this rule with an iron fist. They expect you as future physicians to adhere to the policy based on a sense of professinalism. It's really not as bad as it seems. There are many school which have this kind of policy.

Well, I hope this info helps to ease your transition and best of luck next year. We are working hard to make sure everything is running like a finely tuned engine when you get here, so just enjoy the ride.........there is nothing like it.

😎 😎 😳 😳 😳 😴 😴 😴 😴

So you have a bunch of sleeping smilies in your post. Surely you aren't tired, I mean med school is a piece of cake and not something that tires you out, right?

Thanks wildman6, We love our upper classman already 😍 Of course it remains to be seen if you all still love us once you no longer have the school to yourselves. 😀

Wow AmyB, has the kissing up started already??? 😉 Hmmm... i have some errands and work that could be done for some Block 1 exam answers...

Alright Amy B, having noticed your extremely high number of posts about an institution that you know relatively little about, i can honestly say that you have already gotten on a large number of VCOMer's nerves. You'll need more than an interview to become the official VCOM expert. Keep in mind that a lot of us read these posts, so you might want to simmer down a tad.

I have never professed to being an expert on VCOM and your post is totally out of line.

What did you do? Rejoin today under a new screen name just to bash me?

I am an outspoken person, always have been and always will.

Just a little bit of advice.... sorry it sounded so harsh. Didn't mean it to.
