Everyone I have spoken to at the school seem helpful and they are great about getting back to you about applications and questions. Does anyone have anything to say about how they compare to schools like CCOM, PCOM, AZCOM, DMU or OSU-COM? From what I can tell its a great schools but I'm wondering if they have similar clinical and residency opportunities and what they're reputation is like in the medical community or just with students.

I'm sure VCOM is great. There were people in one of the earliest classes at the Blacksburg campus who had some small complaints (in the class thread from last year) but overall people seem happy.

I know quite a bit about CCOM having visited there 3 times (just interviewed there). The President of the AOA is the dean there. The Chicago area is great for rotations and people always say that CCOM has the best ones. Expensive, though... I'm sure maintaining all those rotation connections & sites are apart of it...

VCOM is great. I searched around quite a bit and ultimately chose VCOM for several reasons. I am starting at the VCOM-Carolinas campus and I am absolutely enthralled about Spartanburg Regional and VCOM itself. The building is going to be immaculate too. Their match list from last year was pretty impressive as well. There were of course a lot of FP and Peds matches but I also noticed a substantial amount of Anesthesiology, Gen Surg, Internal, and Opthalmology matches. A few students matched in to derm, neuro, and ortho spots too!

Any VCOM students in blacksburg or people who have interviewed there? Information about clinicals and hospitals would be great.

Bioman2006 is a current student or maybe a recent graduate at VCOM and he has a wealth of knowledge about the school. I would shoot him a private message with all of your questions.

I'm VT alum and know a lot about the school, I'm going to the open house tomorrow morning also. Most rotations are done within the Carilion hospital system, which is widespread throughout all of Southwestern Virginia. I'm assuming that students will also be doing rotations with students from VT Carilion SOM, which doesn't have any 3rd or 4th years yet. There are also rotations in an all DO (with the exception of one MD) family practice in Blacksburg. I shadowed there and all of the doctors and staff are incredibly nice and you will really get to see how to put OMM to work in your practice. There are also rotations at Montgomery Regional Hospital I'm pretty sure, which is the main hospital that those from Blacksburg go to. VCOM will have the rural primary care rotation as well, which will be somewhere in Appalachia that doesn't typically have much access to primary care. They have amazing rotations (they may just be outreach, so don't hold me to it) in underserved areas of the caribbean, as I believe they have 4 of their own clinics there. There are also tons of outreach and rotation opportunities within underserved rural communities as well.

You are integrated very well with the Virginia Tech community, so it's very nice if you want to keep the feeling of undergrad alive, or just want to go to a larger school. Blacksburg is one of the most beautiful towns I've ever seen and the VT campus is absolutely gorgeous. The sense of community is incredible. There are free clinics to volunteer at throughout the New River Valley. Christiansburg is nearby and has a nice little mall and movie theater, etc to get away if you want to take a day trip. Roanoke is a very cool city and it is about 30 min away.

The facilities are amazing. I sat in on a couple of OMS II lectures there at the invitation of the professors. Faculty is amazing and incredibly helpful. They all want you to succeed, but this can be said pretty much about every school it seems. I have never seen the OMM lab, but I hear it is AWESOME.

PM me if you have any specific questions and I may be able to help you out. Just wanted to give a brief synopsis.
