VCOM Spartanburg, SC Discussion Thread 2010-11

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Which brings up a good question...Where will they hold the interviews? The main VCOM campus?

I know most people probably already thought about this, but it just hit me haha.

so i went to spartanburg to look at the area. the school is located in a very bad section of town! i then looked up the stats on crime in spartanburg and it is much, much higher than the national average. so i guess i have to factor safety into choosing between the VA or SC campus as well. i do hope that they fence in the school so that when students leave at night, they will be a little safer walking to their cars!

I live pretty close to Spartanburg, and I have to say that I'm quite surprised the school was built on Howard Street. It's notorious for shootings, prostitution, drugs, and other sorts of issues. Here's an article about how dangerous the area is: http://www2.wspa.com/news/2010/mar/01/9/dangerous-streets-ar-47966/

I'm sure they will make safety a top priority for students, but I still don't like having to be near that kind of mess.

it'll make rotations more interesting. suck it up.

Do we make the check out to "VCOM" or "Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine"? Couldn't find a preference in the directions, so maybe it doesn't matter?

I made mine out to VCOM.

Interviews will be held at the campus you designated as your preference.

you're saying suck it up after a post about murders, robberies, and rapes in the exact location the DO building is being built. not only is that stupid, it is disrespectful. the students are here to learn, not to be unsafe. the fact that there is increased risk for the students themselves to be victims does not make it "more interesting". maybe you should find a different field if you care that little about the safety of others.

I know you have more insight about it than me, but....I'm pretty sure the SC campus will not be built in time for interviews

It says on the secondary that the interviews will be held at the campus that you select. How they're doing that for the SC campus, idk.

There isn't a building up yet, so it's possible that they will conduct the interviews at Wofford College.

haha, whoa there chief. it's called sarcasm.

👍 I'm sure they'll have some sort of raw admissions building set up in which to conduct interviews. If not, they will likely be at a nearby campus of some sort. I am a bit intrigued as to how the tours will go though... Maybe a powerpoint of the blueprints?

hey guys, i received an email from VCOM this morning:

"We thank you for taking the time to submit an application to the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Your application is scheduled to be reviewed by committee. The purpose of committee meeting is to determine whether or not to invite you to submit a Secondary Application and letters of recommendation."

does anyone know if they screen very heavily before they send out the secondary?

They're big on GPA. Won't get screened so much for MCAT per se. They also screen much more heavily for those that aren't from the appalachian region.

thanks, VeeTee. for those who already received the secondary, can you please post the question? i would like to work on them while waiting for VCOM to review my app

ESSAY QUESTIONS:
Please answer the following questions and limit your response to one-half page.

What are the top five qualities you feel you bring to VCOM that would enhance the overall climate of our college?

Osteopathic medicine parallels allopathic medicine but has principles and practices that are distinct. Which of these principles and practices are of greatest interest to you and why?

There are many problems facing healthcare in America today. Describe your interpretation of the status of healthcare in the United States today and those challenges the patients and physicians of tomorrow will face?

In the event you submitted an application to VCOM last year, what improvements have you made to your application?

I received this email on June 30th, and I'm still waiting for a secondary.....

However, their secondary application is on their website. You could go ahead and download it and fill it out.

My guess is that they do some screening but it is not very heavy. I believe that they expect science GPA to be above 3.0. Just I feel, i could be wrong.

WOW, I had no clue the area where this school is built is so rough!! I was pretty stoked about potentially going there just because of its universal location to a number of cities. i think visiting the city should help me lean toward a better decision but honestly there aren't any many schools that are by ritzy areas

I am beginning to have second thoughts....i dont want to have to carry in one hand a weapon and in the other a defibrillator !!!!

dont be scared.
Walk in a group when you are there or follow other safety rules.

SC has conceal carry laws. Carry a loaded firearm and you'll feel much safer unless you're one of those wusses who's afraid they'd shoot themselve. Don't start a political argument with me.

While SC allows concealed weapons (with a permit), I'm not so sure the school would allow guns on campus. Either way, yes the area is dangerous, but I'm sure the school and city will do everything necessary to protect the students.

Hey has anyone else heard about the Upstate getting ANOTHER med school the year after VCOM Carolina opens? USC Med is supposedly opening a campus in Greenville in 2012. This should be interesting.
