Yes, I want to stir up controversy.

VCU students have a CD that each class maintains for the next year students containing all professor's old exams, notes, etc. Not only that, I was told for most teachers that their exams change little to none each year and that to study the CD would serve you "very well and guarantee you an "A" in the course."

Now granted, memorizing answers won't serve you well for your board exams but do people see this sort of action as ethical?

umm dude do you wanna quiet the stuff down??

every school has the same stuff.... you can get by with the information but not get an A... whomever told you that is lying.. -- btw you are paying 2grand for that information, we don't just hand it down to you..

actually, not really. You can get to know other students and get that info, but VCU is the first school that in my experience does it blatantly.

I have thought about this very thing many times throughout my college career. You need to do what it takes to pass the boards. You will have to put in some work regardless.

A professor's old exams can only get you so far, but they can also be very beneficial to use as a guide. Therein lies the grey area. The trouble is that most students are lazier than **** anymore. (myself way included)

It just amazes me that a professor wouldn't change anything from year to year. In my eyes, he is almost facilitating this kind of action. And if the faculty of that school have that attitude, then is that wrong?

At many unviersities, undergrad chemistry, organic, and physics labs get changed very rarely, so to get your hands on someone's old labs was like striking gold. The sad part is that most faculty know this and don't care to change up the labs every year. Does their laziness also lead to students laziness?

Bottom line in my book is that you need to take some responsibility for your education. If you want a great board score than I believe you may need to earn it, regardless of how your gpa looks. 🙂

vcu decided to level the playing field, it found it was not fair to students that didn't have access to old exams.. also the old exams are not exact copies.. and they are only pretty much for pre-clinical courses.. old exams exists in all professional schools, they mean jack unless you know the material

yes this is true. In my undergrad i remember other students having "illegal" old exams...and they passed no problem. so i agree with "leveling the playing field." I also agree that there are other schools doing this...I was told during my interview at Maryland (by a professor) that I was to be sure to get the old exams from my "big brother/sister"...that's what they are for....
so i agree that it should be used as a study tool and not a free pass

this isn't vcu specific...i've heard this from different friends in d school. many of them get mad when they learn all the material, only to learn that one of their old practice tests was the exact same as their exam.

whatever though, the boards are what ultimately matter.

Yeah seriously, many grad schools have old test copies in the library that you can get your hands on. The professors encourage it, though I can say I took neuroscience as a Master's student at VCU and you HAD to study. The tests weren't the same AT ALL. It just shows you what you need to focus on.

man, what are you people on? my brother, 2 sister in laws and cousin graduated from VCU dental and there is NO SUCH THING! and yes, all your doing is stirring up controversy....controversy about nothing. you think dental school is a joke like that? no freakin way...

where did you come from?

That's what perturbs me is when other students have access to those exams as it does offer quite a bit of an advantage in many circumstances. I'll agree with you though rocknightmare about VCU leveling the playing field and others comments that the board exams are what matter most. In a way, it seems more "fair" to allow everyone access to that material.

It's the professor's responsiblity to change the exams, but I was told in quite a few cases their tests were practically identical, if not very similar. Anyhow, just wanted to hear some opinions on whether or not they felt this system was ethical.

so I am confused...KOM...you accepted VCU's offer...and now you are complaining about their ethics?? Are you trying to decide whether to attend there or not??

I haven't accepted their offer yet. I've already had to put down one deposit and I'm waiting to hear on my Air Force scholarship in which case price of tuition won't matter and hence won't factor into my decision. I'm also eagerly waiting to hear on a couple medical schools that my wife applied to in order to make a decision.

Practically all schools do this in one form or another.

KOM, please decline you acceptance to VCU. The last thing we need at our school is people like you who stir up controversy for no reason. Please do us all a favor and stop sucking at life.

actually the professor is not responsible for anything.. if you want to do well, you do your own stuff. this is not high school buddy.

Kom,

I feel ya buddy. Everyone should have an equal oppurtunity to access those old exams. It drives me nuts too.

Oh and you don't suck at life. 🙂

"hangs head"

Guess I need to go back to high school and stop sucking at life.

...well, apparently I hit some VCU nerves out there. I forgot students will defend their schools to the death. You guys need to calm down. I wasn't aware that every dental school offers that sort of information to each class as you've so adamently pointed out.

I was asking to get some other's honest opinions on what they felt about it. Thanks to those who didn't draw their guns. I couldn't help but think about how VCU emphasized in the interview this strict honor code/pledge, but yet if they were to have asked this for their "ethics question" essay what would be a good way to address it...

that is all.
