I didn't think this would be cause for concern given how early I submitted (I was thinking that maybe schools took a little while in June to send back secondaries), but my friend said I should be expecting a lot already. Thoughts???

It's important to conserve your worrying for that which is worth worrying about.

lol truth. you got a long road ahead of you if you're going to get this worked up over probably the least stressful part of the process (wait time between primary/secondary)

secondaries don't come until later this month at the earliest. one of the biggest reasons I don't know why people care so much about applying the very first day

Agreed. June is the best time of the whole thing. You're just waiting for secondaries which are pretty much a guarantee except for a select few schools. Between July and May was a never-ending internal monologue of screaming for me.

For me, I did it because the earlier I submit AMCAS, the earlier my advisor starts writing my committee letter. She told me she can make no promises about writing the letter before August and that it all depends on where I am in line after submitting AMCAS. So... there can be good reasons.

You apply early in order to avoid the verification bottleneck. I submitted mid-late June last time and it took me over 2 weeks to get verified. I've heard it take upwards to 3 weeks for some. If you apply early you get a nice and relaxed breather before the secondaries come in.

Makes sense

I suppose different people prefer different pacing. I applied the same time as you and did not mind having to wait a few weeks for verification because I personally didn't even want to receive and feel pressured to submit secondaries asap (back when I believed the 2 week turnaround rule).

Has your friend applied to medical school before, or are they applying this year? He/she seems to be confused on the timeline. The AAMC won't even start transmitting anyone's application to schools until late June, so nobody is getting secondaries yet.

Take this time and energy to prewrite the ones you expect to be writing.

I didn't think that I would have to start posting this so soon in the cycle, but, really, patience is a virtue, the need for instant gratification is not.

Also keep in mind that frequently, secondaries are a tax on the hopelessly optimistic, if not pathologically naive.

+1 My committee also writes in order of when you are verified. And if you don't get in the first session, 2nd session letters aren't sent until September.
