Verifying applicant history (or: my roommate got accepted HOW?)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My worry would be for her patients. People may say she doesn't stand a chance in medical school based on her prior performance, but don't forget, she got in! She convinced an adcom that she can survive medical school, therefore, she has a decent likelihood of doing so. This isn't a "she'll get what she deserves" situation either. Her future patients will pay/suffer for your silence.

You make a valid point and I certainly agree. While there is nothing I can personally do, I may send a copy of what she told me to the chair of student affairs at our university. I worked with her a few times through clubs, so she might be willing to discuss the matter with the school/AMCAS given that her department holds student disciplinary records. Don't know if that would get caught in the red tape of privacy laws, but it's worth a shot and wouldn't be too much time off my hands. At the very least, it's the best I can really think to do.

Oh, real world ethical dilemmas...

just don't get involved man. so much judgement going on here...sounds like you're just bitter since you haven't gotten in anywhere!

If you're talking about the real world, you should know that snitches get stitches.

The extrapolation is hilarious, too. She had a 1.75 GPA in community college so that means she's going to fail out of medical school! If she doesn't fail out of medical school, she's going to kill patients! If she doesn't kill patients, she's going to burn in hell for all eternity! The universe isn't fair. There is no karma or any other overreaching check and balance system. Quit crying, deal with it, and maybe learn a thing or two from your unscrupulous friend because at least she has figured out how to play the game.

I would probably submit an anonymous email to the school she was accepted to. The worst that could happen is nothing. And it seems like it would be pretty easy for the medical school to verify her attendance at the school she dropped out of/didn't report on her application.

Someone doing better than you? Better ruin their life and turn their whole world upside down!

Oh, what am I thinking? Ethical pre-med/doctor? Too often an oxymoron, as is clearly demonstrated by the type of passive suggestions here. I know the universe isn't fair, but I don't see why it's too much to trouble one's self for the benefit of countless patients. An anonymous letter is an action with impunity. Also, you literally only lose a few minutes to an hour of your time. For the record, OP, I don't think it's bitterness on your part. You seem like the seemingly rare ethical pre health professional.

Agreed. Also, I don't see why it would matter even if the OP were bitter about the situation. Send an anonymous email and then forget about your old roommate.

An anonymous letter? Why anonymous? Oh, because you're a wuss?

Grow up. If you want to stand up for what is right, be willing to stand up.

Downsides of sending an anonymous letter: none.

Downsides of sending a non-anonymous letter: probably none.

What does being a "wuss" have to do with anything? And what's wrong with anonymity? Why are you posting on an anonymous forum?

Could it be possible at all that she managed to get in while including her terrible past grades? not sure if it's been verified that she didn't include them, but just asking. we all talk about how sometimes it goes beyond numbers. maybe with a crazy upward trend and a few more years of good academic work she managed to get in? probably not. but just saying.

if that was the case then sending a letter to the school would make you look a bit foolish. I would get the whole story from your old roommate before doing anything too drastic.

Another thought is that she's messing with your head just to make you bitter.

Make an email account that looks like it is coming from the school that accepted her. Write in the letter that her transcript from X is missing from her file and needs to be submitted by February 1 to and give the address of the admissions office of the medical school that accepted her. Add that if she has any questions she should call ___and give the phone number of the medical school admissions office.

Although you won't witness it, just the idea that she is 😱 at this message should be reward enough.

Sweet Jesus.

I've always enjoyed listening to what you have to say, but seeing you map a golden troll blueprint just blew my mind.

Respect.

Am I the only one who just thought "only a med school adcom member could make a plan to screw some over this badly."

i would tread carefully here. impersonating an adcom from a specific medical school can bring the OP legal issues.

That's Lizzy, who is an actual adcom and SDN's MVP. She wasn't serious. =P

OP, I wouldn't send a letter at all - non-anonymous just (unfairly) makes you look pathetic (since you tried and failed to get into that same school), and anonymous letters will undoubtedly get discarded. I would urge you to contact YOUR school's preprof office, as you yourself proposed, and explain the situation. Then, it will be up to them what they do, but you can rest assured that you did what you could. =)

Someone doing better than you? Better ruin their life and turn their whole world upside down!

I know where you're coming from, but c'mon, you mean you don't feel at ALL concerned that one of our peers raped the honor element of the system and snatched a seat from someone more prepared?

i know that LizzyM is an adcom at a top private med school. though to be honest, i didn't know she was joking.

It sadly happens all the time I'm sure. Pre-Meds always embellish their ECs and most put down they are officers of clubs they probably never went to a meeting for. How can schools verify such nit picky things? (and how can they? I know most of the faculty at my school don't have time/care to run the menial tasks of ugrad clubs). Pre-meds will always add more hours then they did and honors they may not have earned. Its up to adcoms to smell the BS and sometimes their good at it and sometimes they're not.

Accept it and move on. Don't get involved, its not worth the hassle. Your friend also won't get kicked out of med school for grades because she shaped up in those years and got straight A's. She may get found out, but probably not unless tipped. I doubt med schools have the resources to check something like that (even with studentclearing house, they only do background checks). That website is mostly used to verify degrees, not if they have been to a school. Most assume no one would not include 1 - 4 years of their lives like that since its hard to explain what they were doing; however, she was able to do it.

Just work hard and apply apply apply!

Sending an anonymous email would be such a petty thing to do. I would just worry about myself. Snitches get stitches. Somebody tell OP's roommate to find a new roommate.

I have a friend who flunked out of college/stopped going after her sophomore year (heard mixed stories). Her mother thinks she is currently at Yale Medical School.

It can happen.
