Hi all,

I took a good portion of my UG studies from University of Manitoba, and then i did a few more years of school at a public state school in U.S.

I am a canadian citizen with U.S. perm. residence and is gonna apply to the next application cycle. However, I discovered a troubling issue with how U of Manitoba does transcripts/course work, that might be an obstacle to my admission.

Basically, at U of Manitoba, we only have 2 types of course length/credit hours, a 3 credit hour 1 semester course or a 6 credit hour 2 semester course. It does NOT matter whether this course has a lab or not; as long as its 1/2 semester, then its 3/6 credit hours. Many of the science courses I took have a rigorous lab component, but it is NOT seperate in terms of credit hours OR registration!! So, basically from just looking at my transcript, you CAN NOT tell whether this course had lab component or not!

I see that many med school requires you to have a certain hour of courses WITH laboratory instruction! But from looking at my U of Manitoba transcript, one could not tell whether this course had a lab or not!!

I know in the states, lab component often counts as a seperate credit hour.

So, how do you all suggest I resolve this? It will be too overwhelming to send course outlines and explanations to the 40 some schools I'm planning on applying!

Before this thread gets buried...

Can anyone shed light on how universities tell whether a course included a lab component if its not registered seperately?

This is actually not an issue at all and it occurs fairly often with engineering classes.

In AMCAS, there is a checkbox that you select for if there is a combined lecture and lab.

Good luck and you can stop worrying about this particular issue.

I don't remember having a check box for whether or not my courses included labs, but on many 2ndaries, they ask for details.

I was an engineering student undergrad, and at my main undergrad institution, labs were combined with lecture even though all courses were 4 credits. When I did my postbacc lab courses were totally separate, and as many as 3.5 credits.

I did not have any schools question the validity of my claim that my courses included labs.

As long as you meet the min # of credit hours for each subject, you should be fine.
