"very strong" letters of recommendation

Okay I see so many ppl on SDN saying my situation is this that and I have very strong letters of recommendations....i don't understand how one can be confident that the letters are very strong without reading them. Am I missing sth here? Sorry its probably a dumb question!

When you ask someone to write a reference letter for you, how well do you know them?

Personally, I have to know this person extremely well, and this person must have a favorable view towards me.

So when I come up to a person and ask them for a reference letter, I ask:

"Are you able to write me an OUTSTANDING letter of recommendation?"

Usually they say yes. If they cannot write me an outstanding letter, I go on to the next person.

Of course you don't get to see the letters, but I'll be pretty shocked if they write me a crappy one after they promised to write me an outstanding one.

or if they offer to write you one! but strong/outstanding/favorable would be good adjectives to use when asking 😉

Well i know i have at least two strong letters because my professor actually emailed me a short summary of my recommendation letter and my dentists also did the same. But im sure if you ask someone who likes you and has a good view towards you then you'll probably get a good recommendation from them.
