  1. Pre-Medical
Hello all, I am brand new to the forum and just getting used to all the info available here. I have a question and would like to know the best way to proceed with things.

I used to attend SGU in Grenada. At first I was admitted to their pre-med program in which I did the 3rd year and obtained a 3.0 gpa and passed the comprehensive exam and matriculated into the school of medicine. Of course I found things difficult but I persevered. I was in the alternate program and had a tough time with Anatomy and ended up failing the course. Of course my academic problems were compounded with a family health issue back home.

I am in no means making excuses for my troubles just being honest. I beleive that my concern for issues back home (parent had heart attack) resulted in me not being able to focus properly. Anyway although I did fail anatomy I decided to be proactive and withdraw from the program effective immediately. I did not go before a review panel nor was I dismissed from the program. Anyway I came back home to look after family matters and doing so took priority over continuing my studies. Anyway now it is 3 year laters and I am looking to go back to a medical program.

Although SGU has a fantastic program I would prefer a fresh start somewhere and also prefer to attend a school that if the need should arise would allow me to get home at a moments notice although the prospect of this occuring is incredibly slim now. So now I am looking at programs like AUC or St. Matthews. Anyway my SGU transcript shows that I failed anatomy but that I also withdrew from the program. Since I failed anatomy I don't have any medical school credits to transfer.

Now that I am interested in resuming my medical studies again I am worried how other schools will interpret my transcript from SGU. In the mean time since I have been away for 3 years back home I have tried to do some research here and there and some work experience medically related to keep improving myself.

So based on what I have discussed so far, I guess I am trying to find out how other schools would interpret my SGU transcript with the failed anatomy despite the fact that I withdrew from the program. Thanks in advance and appreciate any advice.

Cheers.

You're looking for advice from people who have been through a similar situation.

--But like you said, it's a unique situation so you're most likely not going for find anyone here that has gone through the same.

Send an abbreviated version of this post to the admissions departments of the schools you're interested in.

Good luck.

Not to be overly harsh, but you're going to end up in stressful life situations if/when you become a resident and full fledged doctor. What will you do when you get stressed out by life events (illness or death of a family member, birth of a child, etc.)? You have to think about this stuff before you consider tackling med school again. I'm sure you can find Caribbean schools that will take you, but think about if this is really what you want to do. The stress only becomes more, not less.
