Hello, I am looking for a Veterinary Pathologist to help me open a vet lab in Western Pennsylvania. I have done the research and am ready to break ground for the laboratory, but without a Pathologist, there is no point. The problem is that there is no way to gauge income potential. Obviously, the volume of specimens will be very low at first. Please, someone tell me, how much they would charge to read slides for my lab, while I get this up and running. Am I correct in assuming that the pathologist does not have to be onsite? I could send the slides to you, or scope them with real time software over the internet for you. Any constructive comments welcome.

Not sure where this is coming from. Does the internal medicine board get posts looking for veterinarians? Does the surgery board gets posts looking for vet surgeons?

OK, I guess I chose the wrong place to find a veterinary pathologist, that is interested in helping me. My deepest apologies if I offened the "GOD's". I had to start somewhere.

Give the poster a deserving break. They have a viable question and concern. Please don't turn this into a "you know it all" or greed thing!

Great reply. Yes, some are too ignorant to "not know" what they "don't know".

Keep your head up, don't get discouraged and keep moving forward. That's the secret to success. It's not greed as most of the "entire" med field thinks!

Thank you. I appreciate your words. And I know I can build a successful company, but it's difficult when I have to rely on others. Again, thank you.

I agree, it is difficult, but not impossible. If you know you can do it.....do it! All successful companies have had pitfalls and setbacks in the beginning. Some may seem impossible to overcome, but keep striving to make it. The field you comment on is wide open (because the greed mongers won't get rich overnight) and the real time idea is great. You know what they say...build a better mousetrap and the world will knock down your door to buy it.

I suggest that you post in the veterinary medicine forum on SDN. They have threads on veterinary pathology. Good luck to you Todaysguest.

2121115 you seriously need to see a mental health specialist. You interpret anything that anyone posts on this forum as an insult against pathologists. You might want to mention the words "inferiority complex" when making your appointment.

It is not that absurd of a question. I can show you an osteosarcoma from a dog and one from a human and you wouldn't know the difference. Dogs get lots of mast cell tumors.

And there ain't no medicare/medicaid/ACO's for horses in Kentucky!

Thanks for your input. Interesting that I am far from the most negative poster here, yet you single me out - and do so for asking why someone looking for a veterinarian would post on a physician message board, without negativity. Maybe you should lighten up and quit tracking my posts with bated breath. In fact, feel free to put me on ignore if I bother you so much.

I think you watch too much "House"!

I have a little bit of experience with vet path-to answer your questions, no, the veterinarian does not need to be on site. You do however need to hire someone that is licensed to practice veterinary medicine. As far as how much that individual would charge you to read out slides, that would be dependent on whatever you both would negotiate.

I clearly misinterpreted the tone of your earlier post and I apologize.

Are "todaysguest" and "prephar" the same person?

Todaysguest, keep in mind of the site you are on..."student" doctor net! Most are young wannabe hot shot spoiled little pricks that really don't know much and can't see past a dollar. I'm sure there are other more suitable sites out there for the information and guidance you seek other than this one. I would think asking vet offices where they send their work would be a good starting point? You have a great target customer base. Don't give up. Success don't come easy in the beginning.

I have met some pathologists in the past who moonlighted, for lack of a better term, for veterinary pathology. Most of them were academics. There are some differences so you can't just grab any regular pathologist but in terms of general tumors and such it's similar. I really don't know how you would go about finding someone to do this though, unless you were to ask at your vet school or something. You could ask around local pathology groups but this might be low yield unless you paid really well.

I think (no, I know differently), there are still some out there that aren't strickly motivated by money and would gladly help. The trick is finding them, but they ARE out there, maybe not on this site, but they do exist.

Think "old school". The yuppie crowd will be no help, for they are strickly motivated by money!

I think if you're "ready to break ground for the laboratory" but haven't had any input from a pathologist on this veterinary pathology laboratory, have no idea what a pathologist might cost you, and have options but no real idea of how you would interface with a pathologist, then you may not be as ready as you think. Asking around is well and good and there's always a chance you'll stumble on someone trustworthy on the internet, but personally I would want to start with someone I could talk to in person. Do you know who your competition will be? Do you have the funds to stay afloat as you build a clientele? Do you know what local offices -could- be your clientele? How many specimens could they possibly generate, even if they sent them all to you? Are you in an area where large animal specimens are rare or likely to be common? How about exotic species? Who are you going to use as a send-out lab for stuff you can't do (yet)? There are tons of issues and questions, and I have to be concerned you may not have thought of them or answered them if one of your starting places for a veterinary pathologist is SDN -- to the point that I wonder if it was serious in the first place. If it was, then I hope you take something away from this. If it wasn't, then maybe someone thinking about this kind of thing for their future will think harder.

I seriously hope this summation is not a precursor to your future path skills!

Thanks for the input. Now go back to class, undergrad. Or is tonight the sorority social?🙂

Sorry, didn't mean to step on your ego by knowing your not the big kid on the block any longer! Oh, and I bet you wish you knew what the inside of a sorority house looked like, and I'm through with you petty little posers, so I'll let you get the last word in.

You raise all legitimate points. I believe Todaysguest may be onto a (sort of) breakthrough industry for not only or limited to private vet offices. Zoos, game farms, pet breeders, pet stores, dairy farms, horse stables, etc, etc. all have the potential for clientele. We were crazy to think the Earth was round at one time too!

Well this is one of the weirder threads in the pathology forum in a while. A vet and a pre-pharmacy student discussing veterinary pathology. And I thought I had seen it all . . .

well now don't let screen names or studies fool you... and if they do, family history may not!

Hello random dude X. I am actually trained in Vet Pathology. The income potential for this is near crap as all Vet Med is. I attempted a failed foray into this market some time ago and luckily didnt throw away too much $ before realizing the massive overtraining for DVMs in general puts to shame even M.D. Pathology...

You're killing me prephar. Nice work.

Is anyone spending a lot of money on their pets since the recession? Seems like a lot of dogs and cats been getting dumped on my property in recent years. I barely take any of mine to the vet. They get neutered, vaccinated and thats about it. In 13-14 years or whenever their health gets bad, they get a bullet to brain.

Please tell me you're kidding and that you don't actually shoot your own pets in the head when they get sick/old. I put down a dog a few years ago and it was incredibly hard, but knowing she was going peacefully with IV sedation and a huge dose of KCl sounds much better than a .45 through the cerebrum.

When I was a kid and our pets got miserably sick and old, daddy always "took them out back" and they ran off to a farm where they could run and play with the other farm animals.

Nearly 100 percent of the time, they have been hit by a car or mangled in a fight with a coyote/other animals. It would be more cruel taking them to a vet. Putting them out of their misery doesnt bother me at all at that point. Vets will want to do some surgery with a low probability of success. I dont like to spend money on animals. They get a dog house, food, vaccinations and land to roam. Thats it. Oh yea, they also get love 😍

Do you know what the greeting card industry has stumbled upon that is turning into gold? Pet sympathy cards. http://www.bluemountain.com/sympathy/printable-cards/loss-of-pet

Pets are the new children. Most people are not spending less on their pets.

I would reference the WSJ article of the last few months which basically said the entire profession of vet med was teetering on collapse and the students with huge loan amounts from for profit DVM programs would be the first wave of student debt collapse bubble.

Spending on pets is HIGHLY dependent on the sense of financial success of the owners. When owners feel poor, vet med spending falls off dramatically while the same isnt really true with people medicine...

Again, Im very much aware of the finances of the DVM world and have actual experience in it...
