Hi all,

I am a college grad. with a BA in sociology, and I need to take all my pre-req's to apply to vet school...so like 2 years about. A vet I know suggested I look into going to school abroad, where those classes would be combined into the vet curriculum.

I am specifically interested in going to Chile or Spain, and wanted to know if anyone knows anything about programs in those countries, application processes, anything!

Thanks!

I think the programs the vet was referring to were likely in Australia, NZ, or the UK. You might want to do a search for old threads discussing Massey, Glasgow, Murdoch and other Australian schools. People have previously discussed them in length. Those schools have the advantage of being accredited by the AVMA, which means you can take the NAVLE and state boards just as if you went to school in the US.

As for Chile and Spain, sorry I'm clueless.

Yes, at Massey you can start the program with nothing - but you spend a semester completing the prereqs (chemistry, cell biology, general biology and physics) in a competitive semester at the start. Anyone can start this semester and it is the second semester (starting in July) that is the real vet program. There are 25 spaces for international students, and 8 of those 25 come from the aforementioned selection semester (the rest are people who already have the prereqs and a total of at least two years fulltime coursework plus the GRE). In the last year or two it has become somewhat competitive for the internationals in the selection semester - before that if you came and got a B average you were in.

BUT you don't have to take all of the selection courses during that semester. If you are thinking of applying next year (2008), you could optimise your chances by taking a semester at home this fall that includes a couple of the prereqs. You would need to get at least a B in them. Then when you come to Massey in February, just take the remaining two plus a couple of (easier!) courses to reduce your workload a bit. It is a bit of a gamble, and you would still have to work your butt off as they are hard science courses, but compared to the 2+ years of coursework you would need to get into a school in the States it may be worth it.

Also, it sounds like you are prepared to go abroad, but remember it would be for five years, although some part of the final year could be done at home. It is still not something to take lightly.

Just my two bits

You can also start at Murdoch with nothing. It's a 5 year course as well. The upside to Massey is that if you do get into Murdoch for the 5 years there is no competitive semester, you are just in the vet program. You can go the the AVMA website to find all of the accredited schools abroad and their websites to do your research 🙂
