Vet school potential after changing careers?

I simply love animals. Can you really do vets after changing? I would like to do more than just donate to them through causes, as Im proficient in sciences but what good does it do to work your butt off to get rejected. Not a bad attitude but realistically numbers & slots are down, yet despite salaries tanking, alot of kids want to do vets. Any suggestions? Thanks guys. I simply love animals.
