Veteran Personal Statement

I'm in the process of writing my personal statement. I have a preliminary draft done.

My time and experiences while in the Army are really what caused me to decide on going down the med school path. I don't want to just dwell on the fact that I was in the Army, because that's not the only thing I have to offer, but I think it's important to highlight because it is the ultimate reason why I will be going to med school. I'm looking for someone who can review my PS. Ideally a fellow vet or someone who has reviewed a PS for a vet before.

I would like to see a copy too if you don't mind. In process writing mine, but I think the first drafts were all military stuff and nothing else. Looking to flesh it out.

Same. Debating how much is a good amount to put in without going overboard.

Just another veteran speaking from their experience here. I've been working very closely w/Ryan over at MSHQ and my advisors on how to integrate the veteran experience into a PS w/o looking like a one trick pony. It is a tricky task as the military experience makes us unique snow flakes (AMCAS says 400 of 40k applicants served) so it should be stressed, but we want to also hit the expected topics. For my PS I jokingly refer to it as first half American Sniper, second half Greys Anatomy (basically the impact of volunteer experiences); begin with the military experience and how it caused me to want to pursue medicine, turn on the decision, finish w/how I went about doing it w/the 'show don't tell' examples sprinkled across. Seems to be working for me, going 1/2 and 1/2 with the experiences.

I'm not military and I don't read personal statements.

I am a doctor and I did write some personal statements that were well received and have some editing talent.

Wouldn't hurt to have someone "not military" look at them. I would gladly give you my thoughts on yours.
