Hello, thanks for reading my little story here. I’m trying to make a decent decision on my next move. I applied late last year (August 18th) and got waitlisted at UC Davis.
GPA: 3.64 cumulative, 3.61 science.
MCAT: 512.
I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman for five years. Basic responsibilities were CNA/RN/EMT and some paramedic level stuff. Deployed to the Philippines and helped developing communities during two national disasters. Was responsible for stocking over 15k $ in medical supplies. I estimated 18000 hours experience.
Volunteering:
300 hours in a free clinic as a supervisor, 350 hours as a disaster relief worker in my hometown during a fire (led the setup 3 aid stations), 30 hours teacher’s aid in 3rd grade class. 60 hours volunteer tutoring for chemistry, biology, physics and MCAT through pre med club.
Research: 3 years. 5 poster presentations, one of them was a national presentation at an EPA conference for analytical chem project. Earned funding from epa. No publications.
Awards:
Two merit scholarships. Two awards for outstanding student in Ochem.
Work:
1 years as personal trainer.
3 years as tutor.
6 months as a security guard.
Family history:
I’m white. From a very poor family. Joined the military as a way out of homelessness and domestic violence when i was 17.
I’m a California resident. Willing to apply out of state.
Still working on a new school list, last year I only got an interview from Davis.
I would like to do similar work as I was doing in the Philippines. Possibly DWB.
I’d appreciate input. I thought I had a decent app last year.
How did your app change since your last app?
I'd suggest reapplying, but consider applying more broadly than what you did including anywhere you interviewed and were waitlisted.
If you did not include DO schools, include them this time.
