Hi everyone!

I've been lurking around for a few months and recently became a SDN member because I love the supportive and informative community here!

I'm currently still an undergrad taking prereqs to apply (hopefully soon!:xf:) but I want desperately to get involved with international veterinary medicine. I've been looking at the websites for ViDAS and World Vets but the ViDAS website seems to lack any info on future trips. (While the application still says you must specify which trip you're applying for.)

Does anyone know if there is information somwhere on future ViDAS trips?

And has anyone gone to a trip with either World Vets or ViDAS and want to share some insights on the experience you had, logistics, how it affected your vet school app, etc?

Or if anyone really has info....maybe some pros and cons for the two trips in comparison?

I know this is a lot, so even just the answer to my first question would be greatly appreciated!
THANKS! 😀

P.S. as my first post on SDN I hope I didn't break any rules! And if there is already a thread with these answers, just kindly direct me and I'll stop asking questions heh 😳

Did you go to the trip schedules tab on the vida website?? I still see the different trips showing up there. Many trips are full in the next few months but many are not starting in April and after. I went on a VIDA trip 1.5 years ago and it was an amazing experience. Not sure if it helped my application or not because there are so many other factors in the admissions process. But overall I am glad I went and would love to go again soon!!

CohenMeow...I just realized that I've been looking at a site for ViDAS (notice the s at the end) which is another animal welfare group that puts together similar trips as VIDA. I did go to VIDA's website previously and thought I was at the same one when I was on the ViDAS website.

Thanks for the response though! I guess it just took me a second look around to notice the difference 🙂

I'm glad you figured it out. 🙂 I went on a VIDA trip this past summer, and I would highly recommend it!

People that have been on VIDA trips, did you have the opportunity to perform spays and neuters? What type of activities were you involved with? I really want to plan a trip, but it is expensive so I wanted to know more about the tasks you are allowed to perform. On their site it just says what the veterinarian with you feels you are capable of. I completely agree with this, but if they do feel you are very capable and have a lot of experience and education, what is the most you will be allowed to do?

Thanks

On my trip I preformed approx 6 spays and 6 neuters over 3 clinic days. Everyone in my group was allowed to do spays and neuters, the vets were very encouraging and patient. It is expensive but very worth it. You also get a lot of experience with vaccines, drug calculations, placing catheters, and preforming exams. Its a life changing adventure and I definitely recommend it.

Cohen Meow, WOW that is so awesome!!! I am even more excited about planning a trip now! Thank you 🙂

Twelvetigers, thank you for all of the great links! I am definitely reading all of them.

Enjoy your trip!! And planning one would prob help with vet apps... It shows leadership! Good luck!

Just a heads up, there have been some hot debates about the ethics of such trips on VIN and such over the last year. Be sure you can address why it is appropriate for an untrained individual without extensive experience in anatomy, physiology, anesthesiology, etc should be allowed to perform surgery and how this isn't taking advantage of disadvantaged populations without relying on the 'but we gave them a free service!'

I am not personally opposed to the trips, but was suprised to see how much of a hot button topic it has become (at the level horse slaughter was at a a few years ago.)
