So, I just got my new UC-Davis email account today 😍😍 and I tried to make a VIN account... and I was horrified to find out that you have to PAY for it! what!!! So, does anyone know if most vet schools will provide accounts for students? And if not, is it really worth it to have access?

You should be able to register as a vet student and get it for free unless they've changed it this year.

from their webpage "This is why VIN offers free membership to all veterinary students in North America and tries to work with schools around the world to offer free membership to as many of their students as possible."

You have to use your school email address.

It's confusing because I think the default registration fields ask for payment information. If you leave it blank but keep everything selected as "student" and your account is your UC Davis account, you should be just fine. 🙂 Just hit the register/confirm/whatever buttons with blank payment info boxes--I believe that's what I did.

Have fun! It's a tremendous resource and I'm officially addicted. 🙂

When I joined I never even tried leaving the credit card field blank. I entered by information and was never charged--just figured they required it so didn't even try. But yeah trying to leave it blank as a first step probably would be good. If they do want to have a CC#, they don't charge it. So it would just be a matter of how you feel about having the CC# out there.

Thanks for the information! I freaked out when it asked for the credit card info and said "first month free"... implying that the latter months aren't! I guess they just need to update their system to change their prompts if one is a vet student with a vet email account. i'll make my account later today! :hardy::hardy:

Oooh, yay! I didn't even think about the fact that we could start playing around on VIN. Whee!! I'm definitely going to get on that. 🙂

I signed up last night leaving the credit card info blank, and now I'm up and running! I love it so far, I've been reading a very interesting post about a proposed PA law requiring vets to treat any and all patients regardless of owners' ability to pay....👎

Ok, this might be a silly question...but I've never participated in a forum that wasn't open to the public. Are you guys using a more anonymous handle, like you did for your SDN name? Or what?

Thanks!😳

VIN is very open and everyone uses their real names. And everyone is really accepting of the fact that you are students and generally go out of their way to help you and to explain things. Check out the Vet Students forum, there are some good cases that practitioners are working through with students. The Humor forum is always good too and I like the the From the Trenches board - gotta love war stories! The "You Cant Cure Stupid" and "Bad Pet Names" in the trenches are both fantastic, "Lecturer Stories" in the Humor will give you a heads up on what your in for. There's also a fantastic thread in the Equine forum called "Racing" that was the discussion about the Derby and has abstracts of some great research about TB racing and injury statistics.

Also be careful, VIN is even more addicting than SDN at times (if you can't tell from above 😉).
