Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on Virginia Mason in Seattle. I tried searching through old posts, but couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance.

Seem like a great primary care program. I think most people who go their are sincerely interested in PC and that is what they best train their residents for. It's unfortunate that UW, VM, and OHSU are the only 3 IM programs in the pacific NW. I love that part of the country, I wish they had more opportunities 🙂

1) There are more IM programs in the PNW...they are community programs though. I think there are 3 community programs in Portland..Portland Providence, Legacy/Emanuel, and another one.

2) I was talking to a friend who goes to VM and he said that you can easily get a fellowship from there. Perhaps not to harvard/stanford, but can still get a solid fellowship.

Thanks for the correction. My apologies on that. I posted the IM programs in Washington and Oregon below. Virginia Mason is definitely a solid program from what I hear. They have a listing of their fellowship placements and it is definitely good. I guess they don't have a list that looks all that strong since I THINK that most of their current housestaff want to do PC. I want to go into heme/onc probably and will definitely be applying to VM. Oh, how I love Seattle 😍

I am a resident at VM and applying to heme/onc programs. I got a lot of great interviews here on the west coast. So, if you are concerned about fellowship VM is a great place to go as I got some excellent letters of rec which really boosted my application.

There are a couple heme/onc attendings that are very helpfull with papers and the like but if you are really interested in lab research then you should look more towards OHSU/UW. otherwise, I have had a lot of success.

the program's lifestyle and training are very good as well if you want to go into PC, Hospitalist or fellowship. They are most strong in GI but ID/pulm/CritCare have all been successfull in recent years. I am the first heme/onc focused resident over the past couple of years but that is due to individual preferences not program limitations.
