Viruses are the bane of my existance. Sheesh, there are so many of them--and the review books barely touch upon them. I started reading some of my class notes on these, but not sure how much of this stuff shows up on the test. FA seems very very limited (it's concise in respect to the structural virology stuff, but not the actual bugs themselves)--can anyone shine some light on this? Thanks.

I've found (from my Qbank performance anyway), that simply knowing the structure of the virus along with the obvious clinical characteristics is often more than enough to answer a question (assuming the qbank stems usually give the structure details).

My method, which has allowed me to get >70% of my virus questions correct (good enough for me!) is to know what family a virus belongs to, and then learn, via about 6 general virus rules, the characteristics that family must have. It may seam rudimentary and way too simple, but it is the most high yield and time efficient for me.

Let me test you...I'm a DNA virus, I like to get naked, and I'm associated with molluscum contangiosum. Who am I?

yea, and you're also very small, and somehow very abnormal in that you are one of only 2 (DNA viruses) that has to carry their own polymerases. Sheesh, why can't you just be like everyone else, and be in the nucleus. Such a problem child!!

Ill make you happy (or nervous) and say that I had exactly 2 virus questions on USMLE last year, neither of which asked structure. One was a (+) DNA, (-) DNA, (+) RNA, etc. question, though.

anybody using micro made easy? i'm enjoying the read, but i guess it's a bit detailed. How good are the anti microbial sections? our pharm section sucked in this area and was thinking maybe those sections in the book would help me? thoughts, ideas?
thanks

The +/- sense, DNA, RNA thing is part of what I consider to be structure, not just the envelope. Sorry, should have clarified. And I don't want to get into a semantics discussion about what I should consider it to be. (sorry if I'm sounding harsh, taking step 1 in 4 days)
