Is anyone doing peds residency on H-1 visa?
After one finishes residency on an H-1 visa and decides to join a private group, does the visa come under cap?
Is there any way around it or is it better to join academic centre or a non-profit place until one gets the green card?

Yes, but there aren't many programs that sponsor H1. If you join an academic center (a university hospital or one affiliated with a hospital), the h1 is not under the annual cap.

However after residency (or fellowship) you can only join a cap-exempt practice or hospital.

If you do join an under-cap residency, you have the advantage of joining an practice , cap exempt or not, after residency. It is however not guaranteed to get that h1 sponsorship for residency, as there are only 65000 H1s per year and they get used up on the first day the h1s are offered.
