Hi,

I am starting a Categorical IM program later this year. I am finishing my MS in Genetics in the US and have applied for OPT. I plan on starting residency on OPT and then apply for an H1 next year.

I spoke to the International Office at my program and they told me I could start on OPT but when the time comes to apply for an H1, I will need a letter from my department (i.e. Internal Medicine) explaining why the OPT year that I obtained for a degree in Genetics was used for clinical training in Internal Medicine. In other words, the H1 petition has to show that I have been in F1 status in the US during my actual studies and the OPT year. Since the OPT is supposed to be triggered by your degree in the US, a justification for using OPT from a Genetics degree, to receive clinical training would have to be given.

I know a lot of people get an MPH in the US and then go onto residencies. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing and if it has caused problems getting an H1b later on. I appreciate any input or feedback.

Thanks!
