Hey guys I have a visa question, sorry if it has been answered before.

As a Canadian, do you apply for a visa after you have an acceptance? How long does it take to get one? ie. if (theoretically) I was to get accepted next November/December, and then applied for a visa, would I receive it in time for matriculation in June?

Thank you

Do I need a Visa to study in the US?
You will need an I-20 from the school once you are accepted.Start the process early after receiving your acceptance as it can take a while. A school official specific to dealing with international students will issue the I-20 once they have received proof of your ability to pay the tuition and associated living costs for the program.

You will need proof of funds from your bank/personal finances/line of credit approval, usually in the form of a signed letter from a bank employee; you will have to send proof of funds to your school for them to issue you an I-20.

Check the Canadian Consulate in Ottawa website to find out what documentation will be required to enter the US as a student. It is very important that you enter the US as a student, and not as a visitor.

Do we need to go through this process every year?

Do you need to have a certain amount of money in your bank before they issue the visa so they know you have the money for med school? If so, how much on average do you need to have?

Thank you

That really depends on school. AZCOM and CCOM requires you to have ~350K in US bank account before they issue I-20, which you will need to use to go to US embassay to receive F1 visa. So it's better to start early to give you ample time.
TouroNY only requires to see ~72K (to cover just 1yr of tuition and living expense) in bank account and you will be ready to go.

350 at once😱 Is there anywhere this information can be found for each school?

You do not need to go to any US embassy.

The international student information package I got from AZCOM tells us to go to the embassy to apply for F-1 visa. I dunno how strict this is for AZCOM. Maybe thumbz could clarify

I only heard about this but never seen it till I was accepted to AZCOM. This info is outlined in their online portal that contains many guidelines and checklists of things to be completed before matriculation.

Lucky for Canadians, we don't need to go visit the US consulate. If you were the citizen of any other country, then you would.

That is lucky lol
i didn't wanna wait another several weeks for a visa.
Who wouldn't love Canadians? Now i need to get my passport renewed

Ya, you just get a stamp when you cross the border. If there isn't a line, it takes around 15 minutes and is absolutely no hassle. Oh and it costs $6 in USD so make sure you have US cash on you. And don't ask them to break a $100 =P.

Also, your passport is allowed to expire within the 4 years. Mine will expire before my visa is done but that isn't an issue. I'll just apply for a new passport and staple my visa into it.

Disclaimer: this was MY personal experience. Yours may vary wildly
