Hey guys,

I am going to an open house at a med school. It a physicians area shortage program for people who grew up in nonurban area and want to practice in nonurban area. THe deans of the school will be there. I will be applying to med school next year. Is there anything I could do now to make an impact when i apply? Ways the deans will remember my name? Anything I should be asking in particular about the med school? I have some questions lined up, but I just wanted to see you what you all say.

Thanks

There's little you can really do to stand out much. Tons of people come to open houses and the dean probably meets a hundred people that day. Don't be memorable in a bad way, like by peeing in the flowers or stepping on their foot, and you'll be fine.

Afraid not, go for information or don't go. If you are memorable enough on first impact to warrant them remembering you for a year you are going to get in anyways unless something extraordinary happens like someone spontaneously combusts and you swing a bucket of icewater you gathered from the tears of baby angels onto the person to put out the fire. Further, who are the Deans? The only dean(s) that matters is the dean of admissions. The others don't really have any say in getting you accepted unless they write you a LOR or something. Start collecting angel tears....

Questions to ask:
Residential Options (where can you or do you have to live)
How much contact with the other members of the class not in the program
Clinical rotation limitations or special rotation sites
Length of commitment plus financial benefits
Grading/evaluation system

ok thanks. ill make sure to post a summary of information i learn so others can reference this thread.

Even if the deans don't remember you, you can still use the open house to your advantage. Going shows your interest in the program so you could always mention it in interviews when you are asked why you are interested in the school: "Well I attended the open house last year and learned...."
