Hey Guys:
I'll be visiting Syracuse this week and would like to take the time to walk around the "downtown" area. Is it walking distance from the med school? Just curious about the neighborhood surrounding my future digs...
If anyone can give me some sort of direction I would appreciate it... Thanks. -Lorin

Everything in Syracuse is walking distance, and almost everywhere in Syracuse is relatively safe during the daytime, but don't be trottin' round the hospital or downtown at night if you don't know where you're going, because the city is so small that a couple wrong turns will have you in the ghetto. Walk down Harrison Street to downtown and then you can just wander around for awhile. Ask people where Armory Square is - that's an interesting part of the city. Or if you want to stay closer to Upstate, just go to Marshall Street, which is where you'll probably go for lunch or shopping during the day at school and is the SU area. Have fun - Syracuse doesn't suck as much as everyone wants you to think it does.

Thanks!!! 🙂

To add to that, make sure you hit up The Phantom club/Tailgators best spot to go to in downtown. Also if you are on South Salina street turn around, unless you want to get shot.

I agree, Armory Square is fun. So is Hanover Square. If you like rollerblading/running, you can go around Onondaga Lake (need a car to get there), but beware that the lake itself is one of the most polluted in the world!

For shopping, Syracuse has a huge mall (Carousel Center) as well as smaller malls in the suburbs (Shoppingtown, etc).

For eats, I say go to Dinosaur BBQ or Spaghetti Warehouse.

If you have some time for day trips, go to Skaneateles (beautiful!) And if you're a skiier, keep in mind there will be plenty of skiing at Labrador, Toggenburg, or Song (in Tully... my hometown... 🙂 )
